And we paid some idiots with nothing better to do than write this garbage. I used to have to work out the tax for three staff, I had three of this size volume. We desperately need a concise and understandable code, even HMRC don't understand the present one. It took them three years to work out that I didn't owe them £1600, in fact they owed me £470!
Just because it's long doesn't mean it's complicated. In fact, probably the very opposite. Length means detail, which is used to untangle unusual special cases and reduce uncertainty. Maths is a subject with complicated ideas which require few words to explain them (differing lengths of infinities for example). If there are silly tax provisions highlight them. But this isn't funny and you don't look like a serious group.
I can come up with a simple tax system - everybody pays 30% of their income, screw everything else. Problem is - that's far from fair or effective. I'm not saying everything in there needs to be in there - but attacking length seems like a substitute for having any real arguments against anything that is actually in there. If it takes a 3 billion page tax code to give social justice, then I'll pay for the printing myself. I'll take fair over simple any day.
@BenjyT27 But it won't be "fair over simple" if almost nobody understands the law completely, will it? Some people will dodge tax, and some people will be overtaxed or perhaps even face wrongful criminal charges.
@tdp1909 so, the ludicrously complicated system is to the benfit of accountants, lawyers and civil servants who administer it and to the detriment of all those who have to pay for it! No wonder they are not demanding a simpler system. Many of the ex-soviet states have adopted simple clear tax systems, why can't we??

Also - "the number of pages in our tax handbook has doubled in length" - did nobody proofread the voice-over? Lols.
