I still think it's a act of intimidation designed to pysche out the opposition and give the All Blacks an unfair advantage - which as World Chapions they don't need.
Incidently - If you sung songs like that at a domestic British Game- you'd be jailed for inciting Sectarian Hatred. My second point is that most of the All Black Players are - and have been White Europeans- so for them to claim an 'insult to their heritage ' is absolute garbage.
Can anyone name me a single New Zealand Martial Arts Competitor- let alone Champion ?
Step in the Ring One on One with a 19 year old Mike Tyson -Go 15 Rounds with Mohammed Ali - or Step on the Mat with Royce Gracia - then you can call yourself a 'Warrior.'
Drowning out tradition with another tradition is tradition, not doing so means you have no tradition and is a disrespect to others with whom you are supposed to have tradition with. Tradition!
So the opposing team standing in oppisition while the war cry is going on during a rugby game etc. is a show of acceptance? this woman from Californa is confused on that point. I LOVE the war cry but I loved the english drowing it out (the audience) with thier traditional songs from the watchers..I didnt find it disrespectful at all it was tradition. This is so cool !!! I may just start watching Rugby LOL
tradition , says the white who exterminated half of the maori people , raped their women and stole their land , for me a white man performing haka is just a joke and lacks of credibility
@temokam ok I'm looking at the guy making the explanation...and now looking at your comment and I'm thinking that that has to be the stupidest, most blind not to mention arrogant thing I have ever heard! Have a look at the guy; have a good hard look and then take your cultural bigotry, ignorance and stupidity and get a life
@86nugget19 That film is mortifyingly sad. And the Haka in that is used at a funeral so I imagine the Haka's meaning in New Zealand tradition has evolved beyond war tradition into something bigger
@alexxxnewzealand Fair enough, in the days of straight lines of marching troops led by the landed gentry into the meat grinder but the Wehrmacht,SS troops or the Fallschirmjäger in ww2 would have shot there sorry asses!!
ok accepted..so next time England play New zealand..England.should line up in two lines like they did for 250yrs and march forward with fixed bayonets or call in the royal artillery and fire 20 rds for effect..or god forbid if the Germans ever play the game my they should all goosestep around the pitch and sing Erika...its intimadtion in sport..and its time has come.sorry Kiwis...but move on.theres a big great world out there and guess what is not inhabited with orcs,Fairies or dwarves
@luapyerac Funny you should mention that. In World War One the New Zealand army stood above the trenches and did a haka. The German army could have shot them but instead they ran for their lives.
@alexxxnewzealand fair point mate but I doubt in WW2 that it would have impressed the Japs or the Crack units of the Wehrmacht,SS or Fallschirmjaeger.but I respect your Historical point abrave thing they did.
If I played rugby, my response would either be a battle roar, of a native american war cry(little cherokee) and wouldn't care if my team thinks im an idiot.
why do they do the HAKA??....its to scare the living shit out of you !! What you actually get during the game fair old drubbing and a kick up the arse !!
@AngeloBaltas because the haka was done by the tribe as a whole before the fight, unless it was single combat. Not to mention, why do the haka individualy when the entire team is there to support eachother?
@MrCedarPawn how about the Macarena? I think that would cause the All Black's to boil over. Okay, I'm saying that facetiously. The haka is a challenge, and I think it should be accepted as such, and (if the opposing team so chooses) responded to as such. Frankly, I loved the "silent" welsh response. That was awesome. It was respectful, in the sense of there's no denying what NZ meant by it, but, it was met with dignity and "professionalism." (not the right word, but...you know!) Cheers!
Nice work Ozzie it is a challenge to all opponents on the field. If you didnt come prepared for what is about to take place then hard luck for them aeh
kind of ironic that the haka is known worldwide as part of maori culture when that culture has been pissed all over in n.z. i love it, but if i'd have had to face it someone would have got my elbow in their face.
It's too bad that American's aren't too much into Rugby or Soccer because I would love to see an American response (you know something like the Commanche war scream or the Apache death cry). personally, I like Rugby more because it's close to American football in its rules and I can sort of follow what's going on. Soccer, however, is beginning to take hold in popularity because a large Latino population has begun to appear in the States this last quarter century.
@MrCedarPawn yeah wouldn't recommend it, carry on like that would only pour fuel on the fire. Much like poking a rabid dog with a pointy stick...might be funny at the time but it will only come back to bite you on the bum once the game kicks off. And believe me there's nowhere to hide on a footy field, and plenty of opportunities for payback. Best to face it honourably like a man, use their challenge to firm your own constitution and prepare for war accordingly
@EvKrusty yes, at high school first15. the other team use to pump us up when they did the haka to us (although we replied with our own). its actually advantages to the team facing it (you can see the adrenalin in the other team). most people in the world have never faced it and thats a very high percentage! so is that *calling the kettle black* i know the other teams feel honour when they face it. except for the likes of phil kearns. if it happens to you one day. you'll actually appreciate it:-)

An opinion from an American who loves rugby!!: A challenge is a challenge. If you're ever challenged; what do you do? Walk away? No! You stand and face up to it! I think that's what should be done. I love the AB haka; but it would be cool if the other team did their own thing as well. To have that much tension and adrenaline on the field would make a hellava match!! If anything, I think that's being more respectful to the haka than just standing there.
very intersting. i've always wanted to know alot about the haka. this is very useful information. see you next year for the world cup in the homeland of the Maoris.
@anphash i agree there are complaints when teams do react.. but personally (despite being english born) i am a huge All Blacks fan, i love the extra tension thats created when there is some sort of challenge, be it standing there and staring them down or whatever. but complaints definitely shouldn't be made, its all part of the game and its build up! and just gets the adrenaline running even more!!
@MrWiko7 - respect has got nothing to do with it you nob! I think it's cool when the Maori team does the Haka but when you have a bunch of white boys doing it it is funny shit! It really is all about the show when the AB's do the Haka. The crowd gets into it & so do the commentators, all show mate!
I would just like to know what the 'ban the Haka brigade' would be saying if,England won against the AB's on a regular basis....Would there be such an outcry?
Losers always need to find pitiful excuses for not coming up to scratch.
Bring-on 2011 to separate the boys from the men.Not willing to stick my neck on the line and tempt fate ,but the trophy is staying in the Southern Hemisphere!
He is pretty much spot on, but there is alot more to it than what he has described, a very important point he briefly mentioned was the haka used to 'envoke' or ask help and support from your ancestors in the upcoming battle as well as to lay down the challenge and to fire you up
As for teams facing the haka, they can do whatever the hell they want, as he said, they can step forward and challenge, its not disrespectfull at all, in fact it shows respect for them and yourself!
i personally think the Haka is hideous, especially the white New Zealanders doing it, Oh come on please!! On that note great to see Maoris getting on the team even if they have been raided from them the other neighbouring island, very greedy indeed, Scottish Prodestants and Presbyrterians have alot to answer for(this one I am jesting about).
Just some thoughts, no neeed for anyone to get upset. Something to think about maybe. Slan libh
@152906 I love how racist you are, dickhead, maybe a bit bitter that your team has never bearen the All Blacks and have suffered a recent 28-68 ass whooping.
@152906 Are you out of your f*ing mind?! What the hell are you even talking about? Prodestants? Raided from the other neighbouring island? I can't even work out what you're on about. Condescending limp-dick.
Thank you. I remember way back when I was a wee lad in Dublin, I saw the All Blacks. Now I understand. It's important to keep the tradition alive. My Nurse is from the North Island so I'll mention to her that I heard from NZ to-day.
Sorry, I don't agree with your comment at all. Wales has the right to rebuff all that psychological domination any way they can. I think they did well.
Apologies but what a rude person you are! I guess you must take out your frustration somewhere as your probably to gutless to insult somebody to their face!!!
Cuz you are an idiot who dont know what a haka means, just like he said it's a tradition as a Maori to challenge your opponent with this war dance. It's even great if the opponent accept the challenge by standing up to it and even moving foward in front of the Maori. He even talked about the offering before the haka so please, just shut the fuck up if you don't know what you are talking about.
the Haka isn't just a challenge, it can also be like honoring an acheivement, or other such things, but the All Blacks, the way they use it is very impactful as well
I love watching the haka, but I'm getting more and more annoyed when I hear of certain people going on about disrespecting it. Those people really need to grow up; If you stare, you're disrespecting, if you try to ignore it, You're disrespecting, if you do what Campese used to do and practice behind the posts, you're disrespecting. It seems to me that the only acceptable response to the haka in some peoples eyes, is to look on in awe.
not being funny but if they are allowed to issue "a challenge" why shudnt the otha team challenge them back. They clearly get psyched up performing the haka so why shudnt other teams be allowed to stand up to it? I thought wales were well within their rights to stand up and be counted!
@yumyum078 I think that if they want to show that they accept the challenge, than they should move forward (like what he says during the interview). If the Welsh want to sing a song as their 'acceptance' of the challenge, or to retaliate, than why don't they do that after the Haka has been finished...it's like talking over someone who is already talking.
they should stop doing it away from home - the aussie spoof of the kiwi "where the bloody hell are ya" is funny. "Were doing the haka - every couple of minutes....." So true.......
Moan moan MOAN! This is getting so fucking boring and it is making the All Blacks look like a whining bunch of fucking women. It really is. If you throw down a war challenge in someone elses country, don't get pissed off if there is a response. Wales have come out of this head and shoulders above the whingers and the AB's need to get their heads out of their arses.
What Glen Osborne said in the video is correct, and Wales responded to the challenge accordingly.
But what I don't get is why are so many people still hung up over what Ma'a Nonu said a weekend ago..lol! I had no idea Nonu's words were held in high esteem, and that was his own individual opinion. My advice would be to take it with a grain of salt, also I think the media is blowing it way out of proportion and its worked because it's riled quite a few feathers.
Glen who is Maori & a Former All Black basically confirms in this vid, that there was nothing wrong with the Welsh response & yet you still complained.
Zinzan Brooke & Richie McCaw have also said there is no issue with the Welsh Haka response. Out of the 22 AB's only Nonu was quoted for not agreeing with the response, so stop acting as if the whole team said it.
And yes I am a happy person, it must be frustrating to lose.... a lot. Im unfamiliar with that feeling but I assume that it would suck.
nah i dont suppose u bokke and us allblack supporters would know what its like to lose very much ....but atleast the bokkes know how to win a world cup...unlike my beloved ab`s...oh well lol

Apologies but what a rude person you are! I guess you must take out your frustration somewhere as your probably to gutless to insult somebody to their face!!!
DRSTRANGELOVE105 2 years ago 3

I thought the Welsh response was perfect.

not being funny but if they are allowed to issue "a challenge" why shudnt the otha team challenge them back. They clearly get psyched up performing the haka so why shudnt other teams be allowed to stand up to it? I thought wales were well within their rights to stand up and be counted!
yumyum078 3 years ago 3
They were right, every NZer loved Wales' response.
And teams can do whatever they wish. I WANT every team to respond, it's great! Watch from 2:10

I tottaly agree, wales were fucking good! really ended out as a mean game!

Pretty simple stuff, the majority understand a reply is sorely needed.
The AB's and Kiwis understand and enjoy it, god knows what Nonu's on about.
Most whingers are about the haka not about the response.
maoribattalion 3 years ago 2
they should stop doing it away from home - the aussie spoof of the kiwi "where the bloody hell are ya" is funny. "Were doing the haka - every couple of minutes....." So true.......
georgewtwat 3 years ago
Does anyone care what Nonu has to say anyway?
Good clip, good clear details. Strong on tradition and teams can deal with it any way the want.

Springbokke15 3 years ago 7
nah i dont suppose u bokke and us allblack supporters would know what its like to lose very much ....but atleast the bokkes know how to win a world cup...unlike my beloved ab`s...oh well lol
