god i love this song. its the first day of 2012. spread love folks. we all have one life and we will all be united by death. yes, we are all one. its time to get it already. peace on earth.
OK, this one goes on the list. The list of songs I want played for those I love when I die. Right there with Dylan's " Every Grain of Sand ", the largo from Handel's Xerses, Cat Steven's
" Morning Has Broken ", Stevie Wonder's " As " .............and we'll close with " All You Need is Love ", and as comic relief, " Ob Lad Di, Ob La Da " from the Fab Four. Let 'em leave smiling.
To me, this is one of the most beautiful, tragic, and optimistic songs I have ever heard. I don't know if it is the emotion, desperation, musical composition, lyrics... I guess all of it haha! What do you guys think? What makes this song so good?!
What makes this song so good is the same thing that makes any song from any genre good - you can tell that the artist believes in it. The Kinks have a great catolouge, I don't own an album of their's that I don't like - Lola Vs. ... : great, Schoolboys : great, Village green : fantastic, Word of Mouth : love it, etc. etc. The Kinks have a LOT of great songs that most people have never heard before. Also, X-Ray is the most original autobiography of it's type you will come across.
Thought I had wasted a Saturday Night til I went thru the Kinks catalog on you-tube. Love all the comments. For those of you that posted "I didn't know the Kinks did this; or, Great song, The Kinks??!!" I know where your coming from. We all had different initiations. But if you ask a dozen Kinks fans what their favorite Kinks album is, you'll get a dozen different answers. I love this band. There are many gems, like this one, out there. GL finding them all.
I'm 37 years old and who's loved '60's-'70's music for a long time, but I've only recently become a Kinks fan. What I'm finding amazing, as I've gone along and continue to learn about the band's music, is how many songs of theirs I've heard but never knew it was by The Kinks. "Strangers", "Picture Book", "Big Sky", "Last of the Steam-Powered Trains", and "Sunday Afternoon" are all tunes I'd heard before. I just recently bought the "Village Green" CD and it has become a personal favorite.
Back in the South bay, ( Redondo beach / Torrance Calif.) 1972 - 1983 ,..it was mandatory to know 'everything' about the Kinks, Bowie, Peter Gabriel Genesis, the Who ,..ofcourse later on,..Black Flag, etc,..
Today's Young people who 'think' they know a fucking god-damn thang about rock music or anything are both insulting and degrading.
Foster the People and Bieber are not music ,..neither is Coldplay ,..
I wish I could listen to music on youtube without seeing Justin Bieber's name in the comment section. You are not original. You are not funny. You are not clever. I just wanted to listen to The Kinks. Now the mood is ruined because I am thinking about Bieber. Fuck you.
@OnMyZephir To each his/her own, I just think it's freakin' hilarious that he says strangers ON this road we are ON. hahahahaha, redundant, but as a songwriter, i understand, some things just roll off the the tongue and you just can't deny them. love the song. just think it's funny
@RAPPERScantSPELL EVERYONE tells that to me they all say it's redundant ahahah... and I always have to explain the meaning of my tattoo because I'm Italian and everyone asks me what the hell does it mean??? But despite that I love it XD
@anabri08 Yeah, I first discovered this song when I was 22, having just purchased Lola Versus Powerman and the Money go round on CD, and ever since then, its been one of my all time favorites. Strangers is definitely in my top five.
@RoyNeary77 same thing here. bought the CD for Lola, but found this song on there, and it's been my favorite ever since. Brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it for some reason.
i am still a relative Kinks newbie, but Dave has some great, great songs. and his voice is fuckin great - emotive and strong. of course love Ray's stuff, but Dave's songs to me are the 'Special" ones so far. well, this one anyways. but all the ballads on this album are moving.
Wow, that was amazing...again. So this is the "strangers" song. Damn the kinks were special. Just clicked this link from hearing a cover of this by my fav singer, Norah Jones. Her cover is good, true to the song, almost perfect, but she dont quite have the emotion there. This, the original, is perfect, from the vocals, to that twangy drum, to the epic feel of the song. Outstanding
its all soo good, and i like hearing the drums at the end puounding on like the backing tracks too long or something, there kinda effected some how to with a bit of flange, what is flange?im thinking of flan,
@harrythegrass No langer on the toms, just whacking the crap out of them, Mick Avory could hit really hard... plus there is no muffle on the skin, so you're going to get that ringing... remember this is recorded in 1969... effects back then were more or less limited to plate reverbs (really big plates of stretched metal, or springs (ugh!) and Echoplex tape echos.. there were the usual compressors and limiters, but no electronics as you know them today.. check out how Sgt Peppers was made..
If you get a chance, see "Do It Again - One Man's Quest to Reunite The Kinks". It is playing in theaters right now and it is AMAZING. There is a sequence where the film-maker gets Dave to sing this song for him. It brought tears to my eyes.
Saw the Kinks at the old Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin, TX in probably '79.Got to shake hands with Ray after they sang their encore(s). What a group ! They played for hours...left everyone dazed and delighted.

@supasap. OK, this is very much a question of individual taste. Personally, I think you can hardly beat "I am Free" which is sung by Dave but written by Ray. You could try "Guilty", which I like, and I'm sure you know "Death of a clown". In addition to his solo albums, Dave wrote:- Wait till the summer comes along, Rats, Rock n Roll Cities, When you were a child, Dear Margaret, It's Alright (Don't think about it), Close to the wire, God in my brain, You don't know my name & Trust your heart
Can't forget "Love Me Til the Sun Shines", my personal favorite Kinks song. This one is spectacular too, Dave did a handful of great, great songs; one could wish he'd done more but as is he's got a great trash:treasure ratio.
@PragmaticPriest...that's a good post,..just watched Darjeeling Limited and heard this for the first time in 20 or so years and i' not sure of the effect on me just yet
