@MrDeviousPixie My official, unofficial, opinion is that the two are quite different. The Killers opening is far flatter and even when Marr's opening is weirder.

I have heard The Smiths in other bands as well. Take Blur's Boys and Girls and then listen to Girlfriend In A Coma. Not the same, just they remind me of each other and when one or the other starts I have to wait to hear what song it is.
