After the Cold War, the US decided to do to Moscow what Rome did to Carthage-- destroy the whole infrastructure of the country. The Romans used salt to render it unable to rebuild; the US used quisling politicians (like Yeltsin) and the World Bank and IMF to do the same. Putin may be a very rough and crude politician, but he was created because of the US's punitive measures and policy towards Russia after fall of communism.

Yep,and it also reminds of George Kennan's warnings back then - he warned of waking up the Russian paranoia - and Kennan was not exactly someone who was weak on Russia. And myself, I have been very critical of Russia and have understood the wish of the border states to look for security from Nato, and been saying Russia traditionally only understands the language of force - but this is something that is obviously going too far, and I can understand the Russian anger this time.

Eventhough I find your statement more or less acceptable, it is this kind of attitude that is responsible for the bringing about of paranoia in Russia. Statements like "Russia traditionally only understands the language of force" have very little meaning as they are based on personal grudges and misinterpretation of history. It is people like you that are to blame for the current situation.

My "hawkish" comment goes against my very nature in personal relationships -- and also in international relationships I believe what a country needs is friends&allies, not enemies -- that's actually good strategy, a lot cheaper than military buildup.(e.g J.Carter's "weak" policy was strategic wisdom in the long run) so I think you misunderstood my motifs. But of course, if some country itself has a "hawkish" view on foreign reations,it woud be a mistake to not understand their way of thinking)

As you see, I already mentioned one country, and was trying my best to not single out Russia as the source of all evil - I mentioned that for example for the USA, it would be wiser to win sympathy and friends around the world (like J Carter did - and like the Marshall Plan) than to create hostility - something that worried me when the Iraq war started - and something Kennan warned the US to do - to not provoke the Russian paranoia with too hawkish a tactics,but one must not be too naive either.

I can't nuanciate my statements very well in this space, but I do think the border states the Russians have been bullying are entitled to the stability and democracy that EU brought them, but i find statements the missiles in Eastern Europe are aimed at Iran or NKorea totally ludicrous - they don't bring stability and this time I think Putin's anger is justified.

What border states are you referring to? The Baltic States? What is bullying? Are you British? The British are taught in school that Russia is nothing but a big bully, without any explanation or examples, so it is all too typical to hear this "bullying" from a British person.

"Russia traditionally only understands the language of force" was of course a sweeping generalization, but nations that had to deal with Russia on a daily basis, and without the shelter of the NATO umbrella, have learned the hard way that Russia has most often paid good deeds with ingratitude - examples are hundreds. And I was never taught anti-Russian myself in any way, so no grudges (my family background is, in American terms, "liberal") but I don't know what your certainty is based on.

Do you honestly believe that Russia is in any way different to any other country when it comes to foreign relations? "One can only judge by comparison" - I agree with you totally there. The same criteria we apply to others, must be applied to ourselves too - there are erxtremely few (actually not a single) country which has not dirt in its hands in its past or present. I have the connstant feeling you are seeing thoughts in my head I am personally trying to avoid. As Norman Davies said in his latest book, "like must be compared with like" - but also that "two (or three) wrongs do not make one right"

So I don't accept the argument that something is acceptable because the "others do so too". In democratic countries such a reasoning would be a mockerty of our own values. Thewrefore if we don't apply even higher criteria to our own leaders and bad deeds, we don't deserve our democracy. So my criticism of Russia was not meantb to be hypocrisy. "Like must be compred with like", but because two wrongs don't make one right, it's our obligation to condemn both, & of course start from our own crimes.

This was not apparent from your original comment. What was apparent is your prejudice against Russia. If in reality you are not prejudiced and it was all due to bad wording we have nothing to discuss. My point was that during the years of Yeltsin, when Russia was open to everything Western, people with such crazy ideas like "Russia only understands the language of force" messed it all up and created the situation that we have today. Instead of trying to help Russia they almost destroyed it.

One thing. The NATO shouldn't even exist and yet they go in and out of countries that have nothing to do with them as if the whole world were theirs. Protecting the world against big bad Russia? I'd say it's just trying to justify its existance by doing its one and only job-HEGEMONY. What else would you call the recent events?
