Any way to do this without having the pop-up flash up? I'm a Canon guy, and am going to be using some Nikon gear for a tournament tomorrow and would love to have this setup in order to use some little sb600's near the hoop.
what if you do not have commander mode in the camera and just put the lil pop up flash to fire at 1/32 of the power? will that still fire the ''slave'' ?
Man I just want to say a big THANK YOU for this simply brilliant tutorial. I have been messing around with my SB 600 and D90 for ages trying to figure out how to use the wireless system and then by chance I find your video. Simple and to the point. Got my system working for the very first time. Why can't all tutorials be as simply educational as yours. Thanks again.
If you don't want your pop up flash to fire while in master mode, you can always cancel it setting its 'Built-in Mode' to '- - -'. If you do it, it will only fire your remote speedlights.
@BadBoriBoy It has to fire to control your slave flash units but when the picture is really taken, your pop-up flash will be off. Therefore it won't affect your picture. In case you haven't noticed, 1/1 is written in gray telling you that the flash won't fire. Those that will fire have their comp settings written in black.
@BadBoriBoy It seems that even in the D300 you see the gray 1/1 when you set it in '- -' mode. There are some folks saying that in some situations you can still notice your pop-up flash burst and, in those cases, you can use a Nikon SG-3IR Panel.
You can control remote flashes with built-in flash, but without it flashing when camera takes picture. So it only triggers remote flashes. And you can change settings of the remote flashes from your camera.

Thank you, I watched other video's that just showed their flash fire. Others went into the SB800 and that didn't help either. Your video got me going in as long as it took for me to watch it. Thanks for posting it.
so say i have a d300s, and i have that same flash, I'm able to take a picture and have the wireless strobe/flash on a tripod somewhere else to get the flash from a different angle? as in skateboard and skiing/snowboarding photography?
I want to use my Nikon D90 with umbrella and softboxes, but there is no setting for PC out for a sync cord .. which is okay because I want to use a wireless remote. How do I go about setting my camera to use a wireless remote system?
great video - actually i screwed around quite a bit trying to find a video like yours, a lot of the other ones took forever to get to the point. i recommend tagging your video with some of the model numbers of the equipment supported, save a few blokes the time :)
@TiSuAble The built in commander flash will always fire in order to send the TTL signal. But, you can set it up to ensure that the pop-up flash will not contribute to the exposure. I'm assuming you know how to set up commander mode. In the menu that determines which channel/group to set your flashes, use your arrow keys to ensure that beside Built-in flash, it doesn't say TTL. It should have two dashes beside it (--). Dashes means it won't contribute to the exposure. TTL means it will.
If I understand your question correctly you will need to set your camera to M, A, S, or P modes. If it's in any other setting on the command dial, the on board flash will pop up. I hope that helps.
if you re using the sb 600... the inbuild flash just works as a transmitter... but it won't influence the picture as a flash... and if you put the sb 600 800 whatever.. 900 on the camera and switch it on... the in-build flash automatically won't open itself...
or he needs a SB-800 or 900.. they can also be used as master.. PS: that s not CLS.. D40/x and D60 can also use CLS (=optimization colour temparutre and things like that while using a speedlight)... this mod is called AWL (= advanced wireless lighting)... so they can use CLS but not AWL
Hey great vid man. I was not aware of that function. Is there a way to make it so that the built in flash does not fire, only the sb 600? (I hate my D90's built in flash)
Yes you can turn it off in the camera but the flash unit must be up, it will fire a pre flash but not the full flash, Check your Flash Manual and your camera Manual
I've been trying to use my d200 as the commander and my sb800 as a slave.....I can make it work , but I am trying to fire my flash not using my onboard camera flash. Is it possible? How?

- When you go to the camera's flash menu and select commander mode, make sure to actually set the "Built-in" mode to OFF, because otherwise the pop-up flash will also add to the exposure (tho a little amount).
- The beeping sound is actually two sounds. Two beeps to confirm that the flash has fired, another, longer one to signal that it is ready to fire again. So you won't be able to fire again before that second, longer beep.
OMG...girl photographer here and you have no idea how much I lub you for this video. I'm the type that people have to show me how to do something not told. Thanks so much for this video!
If you don't have a Nikon with the built in commander (like the Nikon D50) you can use the SB-800 or SU-800 mounted on the camera to control other off camera flashes if you have them.
And the F6?

@sictransitmurph radio triggers can do that trick. They do have some limitations but they can come in extreemly handy at times.

@BadBoriBoy Check out the video tutorial here in YouTube from PhotoAnswers intitled "How to use off camera flash" and hosted by Chris Rutter.
He uses the D300 so you won't see the 1/1 compensation in the '- -' mode but it works exactly the same way.
As you may notice on the left side shadow, the pop-up flash didn't fire when the picture was actually taken.
Cheers.
