The Genesis port suffers from broken enemy AI. They hunt you in packs. Whether you fight or run, they'll mimic your movements only faster. It's an extra challenge for expert players, sure, but that's an unintentional benefit.
Have you played the GBA version? New moves, new enemies from Double Dragon II &IV, even new stages...it's the best game in the entire series, even when compared to the arcade original.
@genesislordofdarknes the audio sucks on the genny otherwise the gameplay is fairly good except that is a little looser than the arcade. at least the levels and game design are arcade accurate though (on sega genesis)
The owner of Atari wanted to remake the company into a computer manufacturer, and only reluctantly released the 7800 years after it was created, in order to catch some of the money the NES was making.
He did everything he could to sabotage it's success.
First by removing the sound chips from most of the carts, forcing the 7800 to use 2600 sound, then by making the size of the carts so small, that most of the games needed to cut down on any extras just to run...
this version seems better than the atari 2600 version, the arcade and the nes seems to have the best versions. seems that 3rd party ports weren't than good and the native port by technos japan for nes is the best for home consoles.
This is one f#cked version of this great game. The graphics are crap. The only thing its got over the 2600 version is that the players can actually team up.
@EastCoastDude99 I don't understand why atari had such a difficult time making use of what graphics were available. Both the nes & sms versions look a lot better.
@EastCoastDude99 Yeah it's like the designers thought they were making it for the 2600 and no one sent them a memo. Seriously, Pitfall 2 for Atari 2600 looks just as good as this if not better.
The graphics are pretty good [remember, 7800 standards here], and because the sound chip in the 7800 is the SAME ONE as in the 2600 [instead of using the much better one in the 5200], the music is ass [I bet whoever made it didn't want to deal with how bad the soundchip is, 2 channels, and nearly no usable notes to use]. Hell, the devs might have just used the same music data from the 2600 version even.
At least it looks a bit like a proper port somewhat, unlike the 2600 version.
Actually, the graphics are horrible compared to what the system could do. Thanks to the 7800 being able to throw more sprites on the screen without flicker than the NES and Master system combined, they should have at least been able to give everyone shoes, or draw larger characters. The poor graphics plus the lack of a POKEY chip (The 5200 soundchip could be built into the cart, as seen in Commando and Ball Blazer) suggest this was just a quick cash-in.
Im finding out in my older age that these more primitive games with inferior graphics are just as much fun as any of these modern "virtual" games. Especially when you have two players. I just hooked my 2600 back up. Now I want to find a 7800.
Nintendo's behavior in the 1980s was horrible, they made it so if you make a game on their system, you can't make that same game on another system for around a year or two, and some times not at all. That's the only thing that sucked about Nintendo in the 80s, /=
As for the 7800's sound? It's the only bad thing about it, it was using technology from 1970s! D=
Are there any major graphical advancements from the Atari 2600 to the 5200 and the 7800? I know the hardware is stronger but to me the graphics on the three systems look quite similar. I guess the differences are just more subtle not as obvious as between NES/SNES or SMS/Genesis.
This is what I heard... 7800 had the possibility of making games that looked around 50% better than NES games. However, for some reason, it was a REAL pain in the ass for programmers to make games with great graphics when making games for that system even though it was possible. Then the sound was bad, period. There was no way programmers could make the sound better if they tried. Just what I heard.
They should have left out the music on the 7800 Double Dragon and left in sound effects.
Very poorly done. The 7800 made some simple games very well but this game was way too complex for this system. The sound chip was the system's biggest flaw. Had it had decent sound it would have been great for classic games. This game however, still would not have been good. Too complex a game for the 7800 to handle.
I beaten the Atari 7800 version of Double Dragon at least 3 times in the early 1990's.
Atari went cheap on the Atari 7800 sound chip because due to a couple a reasons. Atari wanted the 7800 to be 2600 compatible and that means the 2600 sound had to be on the 7800 .
Atari also was being concerned about the cost of the motherboard for the Atari 7800. Atari had computer accessories planned for the Atari 7800 and I am pretty sure that is why Atari was concerned about the price of the 7800.
It is hard to play. but my favorite version is NES becuase you can change the difficulty. The sound simply stinks on the 7800 and the graphics are not good as well
The reason was cost and what the Atari 7800 was supposed before Tramiel took over the computer/video game side of Atari.
When the Atari 7800 was created by GCC, the plan was to add Atari 5200 sound chip in Atari 7800 Cartridges for better sound and doing a project for a even more a new sound called GUMBY for the Atari 7800 .
When Tramiel took over, the Gumby sound chip was canceled and the Atari 5200 sound chip was only used for 2 Atari 7800 games.
This version is no doubt the most difficult. I´ve tried every version of this game and if you want the best Double dragon experience you should try the Gameboy advance version. It´s really great.
I really liked the version on the Sega Master System
