I soooo loved going to Gospel Lads concerts as a young adult. Even with the changes in personnel they still touched my heart. Big Dave sings in the choir at my church and he can still wow the congregation with his tremendous singing talents.
Does anyone know if/when the Vintage Lads (sadly without Mel) are going to be doing a concert? This group played a huge part in my youth witnessing with their music and testimonies.
I remember Mel doing this routine 40 years ago with the "Lads". He didn't call it the church pianist then and he called the last pianist Floyd Cramer and said something to the effect of Floyd coming in and sitting on the back row. And without fell, every time everyone turned their heads and looked back.
What a pleasure to see this again. Mel was one of my music mentors early on. He stretched me to sing higher and push myself. I am sorry to hear he passed. Thank you for this memory. His trademark song back then was "People Need the Lord" We had a lot of fun with him. God Bless you.
Oh my goodness! I can't believe I found this!! My dad, Bill Barker, sang with the gospel lads as well as with the gospel lites in the 70s - I can't wait to show him this! And well done, Mel!!!!
Thanks for posting this. I remember the Gospel Lads coming to our church when I was younger. I loved listening to Mr. Taylor play with Murray Hollis and Big Dave Scroggins singing!
Mel Taylor was a TRULY AMAZING pianist. We used to travel to hear him play when he was still with the Gospel Lads. What a great group. We are blessed to have Big Dave sing in our church choir now... and yeah.. he's still got it. i look forward to a glad reunion with Mel in Heaven some day.

Wow! Mel is amazing! I wish I had been able to meet him in this life. I know I will be able to play piano with him in Heaven! Praise God!
