Thanks to KPMMURPHY for bringing me on a wonderful musical journey about a guy I never heard of until today (RIP Mic) but whose song was etched in my mind from the tv ad. So sorry we lost such a talented and apparently a lovely guy. Am a fan of Glen and hope he cherishes the memories of his time recorded and unrecorded of an obviously great friend. We can all learn lessons from this.
on saturday mic's family held a memorial song writing competition for local bands. i had no idea it was a huge event, all i knew was that my boyfriend's band was playing a song against 5 other contestants. it was in the local pub, Aras Chronain. Your one from the Commitments presented it kinda, and Glen Hansard and The Frames played afterward. The Fitzafrenics played too. it was AMAZING because it was all so casual!! Then after that they played homemade videos of mic. very touching.
Wow...cool dude.....btw....here's some nice busker competition....a lot of cool buskers there ... enjoy =) randrworld[dot]com/buskers-competition.php
I went to school with Mic in Clondalkin, Dublin, & I remember that he wasn't too popular with teachers etc, because even back then, he could see beyond their petty annoyances & I reckon they felt threatened a little by his intelligence. Sound guy, always very nice to me as he sparked up a doobie at 8am on the way in to school!
@justbeaduck Mic's album is called Skylarkin. Glen has several albums out via his 2 bands The Frames and The Swell Season. And if ya haven't seen it check out the movie ONCE.
@thomas101ful i'm sorry, but i disagree. mic was, and glen is in a different league to the coronas. as far as i'm concerned, they're a glorified pub band. but mic christopher was a serious loss to the irish scene in general.
Same and im a fully grown man!!! Very annoyed at myself for only finding Mic's music in 2003...
When Im at a bery low point or high point in terms of happiness, I always return to have a look at these grafton street busking vids... I miss old Dublin and the characters it used to have.. Sincere and genuine.. There still there but u gotta look a lot harder for them.. :))
Saw Mic in the Lobby in Cork a few months before he died. I can't believe that was 2001. As well as the gig being brilliant, he was such an entertaining, genial guy.
i recently learned of Mic Christopher while doing some research on Glen Hansard. As a result I purchased his album. Heyday is now a favorite. Mic Christopher was a great songwriter... sorry I didn't learn of him earlier.
such a great moment. mick was such a talent. glen is one of my idols. 2 unreal IRISH talents havin a laugh. so tragic what happened to mick. glen covered this song later on and my god did he do mick proud. you can see how much mick meant to glen. it rips me apart inside not knowing what songs these guys could have wrote together.
@oscarkev190 I'd vote for it, though I'm not a native. My husband and I were in Dublin 2 months ago. We made a point to leave a set of guitar strings with a note of thanks to Mic & Glen as well as a word of encouragement to novice buskers.
A nice bronze plaque on the site in tribute would be cool too!
Does anyone know what year this is?? Cuz just mad to think how new and recent it looks, but mic died years ago ha Thanks.. I love this and the suspicious minds video... Just two lads enjoying life! ha
i just love this song. brilliant work. too bad Poor old mic died. i would have done anything to see him live. I guess ill have to settle for the next best thing. Glen!
would have loved to have been there.sounds brilliant.mic was a legend, and glenn hansard too in fairness. mics cd is called skylarkin, but hard to find...come on Ireland
The song is on his only album "Skylarkin'". It's also on here in another video with Mic doing it solo. From the sound of it, that other video was his first time performing it as you will hear his explanation of the song -- that every day should be your heyday. You can also download these videos and convert them to your player. There's even video here on You Tube explaining how to do it so that you can download and convert them. Or iTunes just for the song.
Thanks for the tips, great stuff! Will check it out. I think I must have listened to this song 20 times yesterday - theres not many that dont grow old after that many plays!
Okay, one more. They do "Suspicious Minds here on Grafton Street.: But there's also a video here on You Tube of Glen Hansard & the Frames in Concert and Mic does "Suspicious Minds" as a guest appearance - a professional appearance.. It's something to be seen and I can't watch it enough. At the end he gestures to Glen and I'm certain he's saying how close a friend he considers Glen. God Bless Mic.
Okay, one, one last one. There's a video on here of Mic and Glen but no song title -- but the song is "I've Got Your Back." Glen comes on, says something in Gaelic -- Mic introduces Glen and starts singing -- pretty song. At about 1:27 they hit perfect harmony. It's beautiful. Also, here on Grafton Street they do "You, Ain't Goin' Nowhere" - a Dylan song. Also should not be missed. There are no words.
its actually on the album "heyday" as well...you can get it in d/l on Amazon. He has three albums available on there for those of you who are interested! Love me some Mic!
Buckley too. His covers that he made his own. And "Grace." Who knows what he did not get to write. I see a well of untapped talent whenever I watch any videos of Buckley -- and with that voice that reached 4 octaves. Same for Mic Christopher. Takes time and, unfortunately, Buckley and Christopher did not have time -- but they sure had a mass of REAL talent that few people have.
not about the number of albums you release its the quality of each song. plenty of albums with only one good song. sky larking has a huge number of superb songs. The man was a legend. A gifted song writer that gets no credit as its not viable to promote someone who cant tour. understandable and noyones fault but tragic none the less. listen to the album and post a comment again
More than a good tune. This is music and lyrics -- written from the soul. They are musicians. Not the stuff that passes for music sometimes. I gather they have some of that over on the other side too. Mic Christopher and Glen Hansard -- this is true talent. What you don't realize is where someone like Mic Christopher might have gone -- afterall, look what Hansard has done with his career -- no less than an academy award for his "song."
True words, true words. It never ceases to amaze me how many aspects there are to Glen Hansard's songs and how much material there is yet (for me) to be discovered ... and I've been listening to the frames for around 6 years now!
But, with regard to Mic - and where he might have gone - well, in my opinion, he already got to a place with his music that most will never reach. Just listen to this song. And listen again.
My favorite is a video on here of Glen & Mic in NYC doing "Fogtown" in a NYC bar. Mic in his best voice and Glen just beatin' on the guitar -- some of the most impressive acoustic guitar and Mic's amazing voice. I'm so happy aabout Glen's success. I believe he has a wealth of talent and everything he touches will be gold. So, I'm happy he has success without his friend, but hope that Mic is just as successful in a place where we we will see him again. I love You Tube for this reason.
Bang on, once again - just found that track yesterday - Fogtown is just perfect, you know, once in a while, you find yourself in one of those situations where you know you're listening to something special, and I would have loved to be in that bar that night ... that voice is so strong. I remember seeing Damien Dempsey play in Limerick many years ago ... opening for Sinead o connor .. similar feeling. there is so much irish music as yet undiscovered for me and I love it ! and yes, youtube rocks!
If you like these then run a search under Glen and valmez. There's a handful of clips I refer to as the valmez Campfire songs that are truly special. Given the length of time you've been following Glen you may already have found them. But just in you hadn't I thought you'd want to know.
oh mic ,you were a light that went out way before its time, when you sang, be it in whelans
or at a party, you always gave it everything. those times will be with me always,I'd love to believe there was a heaven and that you were gigging away in paradise, just make sure you put me on the guest list and I'll do the door for ya...cheers man.
This song makes me cry! Its truely an amazing song. R.I.P. mic <3 You brought a brilliant song to us, a pity u aint around now ta see how much of a success its been. :(
I could watch this forever and never get bored. This is what making music is all about: writing songs and playing them in front of people who don't know you. Without the lights, effects or PA. He owned that street that day. He just looks as if he's in his own living room: completely at ease. I would have loved to buy this man a pint or two. And Glen. Today is the first day I heard Mic's voice but I'm sure it won't be the last.
SO GREAT THE BOTH RIP MIC

Its funny, Glen looks lost in the presence of Mic. one can only speculate on where they would have gone together if Mic were alive today.
This song lifts my spirits every time I here it! Mic you ARE a true legend!
