Personally I think this was their best song, it kinda sums up what this band were all about, and brings back memories of places I've visited in the past that were somewhat dangerous.
hahahaha my dad just came in and i played this and then he whent back out hahahah lol
he hats mod music going to my girlfriends stepdads mod bar/club thing today (: yerrr its good i got in free love it its onley me and my girlfriend who are like 14 and 15 there ahahha love it meeting all the old mods so fun allways has some nice scooter out frunt
1st class.Without a doubt the best band to come out of the "Punk "era.Paul Wellers' written output from 78-82 is just genius. The amount of just 1st class songs written and recorded in those short 4 years is incredible. These days it takes a band that to record 1-2 album and the jam had All mod cons, setting sons, sound affects, and the Gift not to mention the singles and excellent B sides.
I adore the Jam and still blast their music from my car to this day which goes down a storm in the middle of Ohio. Bless their little cotton socks. But you can take a girl out of London but you cant take London out of a girl and I bloody love the Jam!!!!!
how many songs from back then sound as good /current now as when they were written?? that's a mark of just how fucking good The Jam were. true they did their fair share of middling stuff, but this is an epic- like many others.
Brilliant stuff, much better than most of the Punk Era stuff,I mean some of it was brilliant but most of it was racket, these boys came along and added more class, and melody in,whilst retaining the raw energy!!!
I think they were originally based more into punk but found their niche in the Mod revival and who took them too their hearts and likewise the Jam embraced that. After the Jam Weller had the fame to indulge himself with other stuff - good job really because he's brilliant.
I think Polydor are selling The Jam short calling them mod-revival! Yes, Weller is a mod, but they generated their own 'sound' by the middle of their career, and experimented with all sorts of genres in later years?! Would Secret Affair have brought out summat like 'The Planners Dream Went Wrong' or 'Pretty Green'?
I think the way they generally protrayed is selling them short. there's more to them than some blokes in suits trying to be mods. They're moere than the start of some fashion following or whatever. They're a band that actually had something to say.
You are right about Cash Converters . I bought a copy of Layer Cake on Blu Ray for £7 & got my mate a pair of Mission speakers for £25!. My guess re Strange Town is because Paul Weller comes from Woking London would be a Strange Town. Do you like the Pretty Things?
ahh this song takes me right back to age 23 in april 1980, saw them lip sinc this on American bandstand, they also did Heatwave ! both fantastic ! I was allready a huge fan, the Jam 4 Ever !!!
Loved the Jam when I was a teenager, recently got their entire back catalogue and this is one the best songs, amazing!!!

Sorry my dear but that Train station is NOT Barking (I know barking) it is Victoria. I have just seen some of your videos. You are very very fit.
kingofpunk1967 2 years ago
Thanks. But why use the single most well traveled train stations to show "a strange town?"
At the end of Barking Market they have the best cash converters! No one knows about it!
BrickLaneBetty 2 years ago
Isn't that the point of the song? Even though it's a big place, it's strange because it doesn't feel like home and the people aren't friendly.
