  • I was there for the 1958 race , an experience that I will NEVER forgot . Like most other teenagers , a group of us went up the night before to get a good spot , at around the 13,000 foot range . We could see a lot of the hairpin turns below us , and were able to look in the drivers eyes as they went by us . Only bad thing , at that altitude one beer hits you like three at sea level . I didn't get to see Jerry Unser , because he crashed early in the race . He later crashed and was killed at Indi.
