WOW! Robert... this is such great footage. Love it! Do you have audio for the whole show? There were so many firsts that evening: besides all the new AATS material, new arrangements for Carbon, China and Icicle. It was just a magical evening. Thank you for posting. Are you going to OZ?
Wow, four keyboard voices in the same song! She definitely took this one to the next level live. On the album she just uses the piano during the chorus to play chords on beat one. I liked that on the album because it let the chords "breathe" and opened up space. However, the new piano melody during the chorus adds some extra elegance. I also dig the more robust organ during the pre-chorus. Her songs are like living things, always evolving, and I love each version for different reasons!
Thx for the upload:) I CANNOT WAIT for next week!!! She'll be doing Florida shows(only two...I'm shocked cos she ALWAYS does more than two in FL.)...Anyhoo, I just can't quite get enough of this tune! I love it/dig it highly;-) Thx again for the upload!
AWESOME, can't wait to see her! I'd LOVE to see this song live!
Is it just me or does it seem like she strained her voice during the ADP tour? She just seems like she's taking things a bit easier vocally on this tour.
That image has me chuckling! However, even if she could play everything, I wouldn't want her to, as Jon and Matt add extra beauty and passion to her songs.
When she performs Solo its such a richer experience, and she is free to be with the songs and go with them wherever they may go... with the band, she has to stick to the structure of how they perform them together, otherwise it would sound like a big mess.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE her with the band, but after two tours of seeing her with them, Im MAD jealous of those Australians!!
I agree to a certain extent. She certainly has maximum freedom when she plays solo, especially with tempo and rhythm. However, just as a great jazz rhythm section can allow the soloist tons of freedom without missing a beat, so Matt and Jon can let Tori explore and keep the groove going. Listen to multiple 10 minute versions of The Waitress. They give her freedom to change it up quite a bit, but never break down. They are not your average rock musicians who fear improvisation.
They played around with Jamacia Inn in Indianapolis too, that was really great. I guess to me there is something about her alone that makes the music a thing of absolute and pure beauty. With the band it is a loud experience, with her solo it can be at one moment as quiet as a whisper and in the next, just as loud as you would like. Either way though, its T! She's the best!
I guess the best comparison I can give is to Thelonious Monk. The guy was one of the greatest composers in jazz history, with fascinating harmonic and rhythmic concepts. However, as much as I love his solo albums like "Thelonious Alone in San Francisco" for the freedom they give him to explore his compositions, I prefer his group albums such as "Monk's Dream" and "Live at Carnegie Hall (with John Coltrane!)". On those albums, the other players pushed the songs to even greater heights.
Love it!

Tori + Matt + Jon > Tori
just as
Coltrane + McCoy + Elvin + Jimmy > Coltrane
and
Miles + Wayne + Tony + Herbie + Ron > Miles
Ya dig?
