@travelplus1 It's free as long as you get on and get off at JFK, if you want to get on or get off at the 2 non-JFK stops, you pay $5 (it's a 2 way turnstile thing where you pay to go through either way)
That's awesome! What were the updates for and also when you go on the subway and stuff, do you like hearing your voice on the speaker or do you feel it's annoying?
@GracieAncelotti To be honest, I don't recall what the updates were for JFK. The updates for AirTrain Newark are more frequent because there I mention which airlines are in which terminals. With all the international airlines serving JFK I don't think there's enough time to note each airline between terminals. I don't mind hearing my voice on the speakers. I don't ride on the trains on a daily basis so that could be one reason.
@brwagenblast I have another question (bare with me here!) I was on the airtrain yesterday and I noticed how the things that were said were like a robot, kind of. Did they ask you to say a selected word from a script individually, or did you need to read each station and stuff all in one sentence clearly so people can understand?
@GracieAncelotti Most of what was recorded on the AirTrain were phrases rather than individual words. For instance I'd record, "the next stop is" and another recording would be "Terminal 2." The computer would put that together into a sentence.
I was thinking that the voice sounded a whole lot like Brent Spiner ("Commander Data" from Star Trek), and a couple places on the 'net seem to confirm it.
It reminds me of the Washington Metro in a way. Tracks cross to form a diamond, Federal Circle looks quite a bit like Rosslyn and Pentagon stations, and they use a lot of island platforms.
I've been on that thing a few months ago and a guy tried to get as the doors were closing but they shut on him just as he was between the door and the floor of the train, so funny he nearly got stuck lol! The airtrains give a good view of the taxiways and aircraft.
same thing in atl, a guy looked very busy and when we were on the train to conc. a, he didn't make it to the train and stuck his foot at the middle of the doors, almost fell when the train departed
America could've done better. I use this train to go to JFK... and this is damn slow, though gets you there from Jamaica faster than a bus. Very clean from inside... and reliable service... but, considering USA's a superpower, this is a disgrace.
First, what does USA being a "superpower" have to do with a tram? Second, if it is clean, reliable, and faster than the bus, what are you whining about?
@PUNISHERWarzone87 If I had a nickel for every time I had to ride this to work, I'd have enough to pay for all the trips!
GracieAncelotti 2 months ago
Its fun to be on. I ride it to work but its expensive as fuck. 5 dollars both ways and you cant use a regular metrocard.

Not the world's best weather for flying, don't you agree?

Anyone know what the track speed is on the straights?
usatran 10 months ago
@usatran 60mph
reaperexpress 10 months ago
@usatran its maximum design speed?..I do not know...but in Toronto and Vancouver their max speed is 40km/h.
Horrible technology and so loud.
snuffsally 7 months ago
@snuffsally The speed they gois of little signifigence.
The distance taveled is so short so that in terms of time there isn't much of dfifference if the train's top speed is faster.

So its free to do the entire loop

Most of the recordings were done in 2003 before the AirTrain opened. There have been a few updates since them.

The voice is actually Bernie Wagenblast, a traffic reporter in NYC.

Oh, just checked that out, it seems to wash.
Apparently the Spiner voice folks were mistaken!
p.s. it's okay to say "it's me!"

What is the top speed of the train? It seems perfect!
merdaenorme 3 years ago
I believe the maximum speed these trains can go is around 120 kph (~75 mph), but from this video it would seem that it is going around 60-65 kph
alweky 3 years ago
This system uses identical operating components to the Vancouver SkyTrain, which has a top speed of about 55 mph.

oh and btw.. what's the easiest way of getting from term 8 in JFK to new york penn station?
maza95 3 years ago
you can take the Airtrain to Jamaica n hop on the E straight to 34th St. Penn Staion

One of the very few systems in north america that have glass sliding walls on station platform edges like high-tech Asia.

@ EsotericDesi, I agree with you. They could built a maglev as it exist in Shanghai.

The only bad thing about Airtrain JFK is that it is so freakin' loud inside the train. They should've put more carpeting or thicker cars...
