As I have previously commented, nowhere is it written that the USSR wanted to invade anyone: they wanted to rebuild their country, they had their five year plans, building socialism and communism. They had no intentions to invade or attack anyone. Typical USA throwing their weight around, as they have always done and still continue to do today.
@ralucagymnast History is repeating it's self right before our very own eyes...Back then it was Communism. Now it's Terrorism...It's all a tool to make us bow down to our superiors and to make them feel needed.
This documentary confuses the Soviet people with the Soviet leadership. The Soviet people did not want war, that is for sure. But the Sovier leadership didn't care one bit what Soviet people wanted. They had imperial ambitions in Europe and if they wanted to attack someone they weren't bothered by popular opinion. This German woman's naivitee shocks me. Perhaps if she had been raped by Red Army forces like her German cousins in they East she'd think differently.
"They had imperial ambitions in Europe and if they wanted to attack someone they weren't bothered by popular opinion. "
What you said is grossly innaccurate. The Soviet leadership had massive problems controlling the population and had to rely on brute force and the fact that everyone knew that the officials lied, unlike western countries sophisticated propaganda. Also, if you weren't blinded by nationalism you would apply the same standard and analyse US imperialism.
@theknasp All that matters is people show up at drill time, not that they believe everything the leader says. "Also, if you weren't blinded by nationalism." is a great ad hominum.
It's not an appeal to emotion, it is an appeal to practicality. What he said was that we need to have the capability to fight wars so that others will see we have the capability, and so that they will not attack us because they know we have that capability. The point is valid. The logic of deterence can be observed in any nation that keeps any sort of military or paramilitary force in peacetime, which, you may note, is almost all of them.
Too bad Petra Kelly is no longer alive. She was murdered. It was presumed he partner did it. I wonder...

1. "All that matters is people show up at drill time, not that they believe everything the leader says." - That goes for every society.
2. Kinda like your ad-hominem attack on the woman in the film.

Mr. Pilger obviously touched a nerve with that US commander! Typical of Neocon appeal to emotion, and the shouting down of any differing opinion.
