Our most powerful computers today are only as smart as a worm, yet we are trying to give robots three dimensional visual cognitive perception? That's sort of ridiculous. I can't see what we can learn from such trivial mucking about.
Yeah, we should just give up. There's nothing to learn. And fuck telescopes - we can't even see the other side of the universe. Fuck synchrotrons and subatomic physics - we can't even decide whether it's string theory or the standard model or what. Fuck learning about anything at all.
Ugh. My point is, these guys are fiddling in a vein line of experimentation. We are learning FAR more about visual cognition in the field of evolution simulation. COG can only teach us what we program it to.
I don't know anything about this particular robot, but it seems like a good platform for testing theories. Or at least (as you've pointed out), those theories that are computationally tractable.
At the very least, it could probably be hooked into some kind of neural net magic blackbox. Hah.
No, because they have no arms. If they did have arms, and were conditioned to, then yes. Worms exhibit a thousand different kinds of behaviors, can transition from one to the other seamlessly, and can even improvise....at about 1000 times the efficiency and grace that COG could even hope to.
Look, it's only 15 years ago that I thought any kind of graphically based internet experience would be completely pointless because we did not and couldn't possibly hope to have the communications infrastructure to enable the massive amounts of data. I scoffed at the use of hypertext "browsers" that displayed the occasional embedded image. Now people routinely download entire seasons of television shows overnight.
they are starting in the wrong vein. They are working from the top down. Trying to make it do the most sophisticated things and work towards the most rudimentary. They need to work out how to build neural networks that mimic human ones first...or even worm ones for that matter.
@DeimosSaturn you are very correct,i'm 15 and i'm making a robot orangutan that's as smart as a moth, but i will "evolve" and "teach" him soon, i have created a simple analogue neural network that hopefully simulate like real neurons, here is my robot: letsmakerobots(dot)com/node/30429 just replace the (dot) with .

Neural Nets can be easily simulated with SIMULATED bodies. Look up "breve creatures".

lol walter, if you say that its impossible, than u deserve to die and come back a thousand years later and see what was once impossible...

You have to start somewhere.
