One other thing that you could do is pack foods that are healthy that are shelf stable so that you do not have to worry about refrigerating your food. Apples with nuts and grapes are a good choice. I used to go to college too and the colleges do not really have health conscience food choices. Most of the time, they only have sugar loaded crap or fattening fried foods. pack a lunch to avoid those public pitfalls.
YEs it matters how you work out. Cardio burns fat yeah but strength training expedites weight loss. Also, don't forget stretching to make sure that your muscles stay limber.

soy beans help because they have a lot of vegetable protein. be careful though if you are a woman too much could affect your estrogen.
