  • That's the best way and fastest way just like Mike demonstrates here . If your knife is larger then just break it down into more sections then Mikes 3 here . Scandi grind is such a pleasure, fun and rewarding feeling while your sharpening and after its done . You do enjoyable, entertaining videos Mike . I happened to find you last week searching for GT Woodman's . Thanks Man From: pcnazz aka rocky

  • @pcnazz You are welcome Rocky..thank you

  • I just ordered a Fallkniven DC3 for the field and a 3 set of kings japanese waterstones (800/1200/6000 grit). I look forward to them. The small set I have now is aggravating espiecally with my flat grind knives. Thanks for the video.

  • @marksj43 welcome...

  • Awesome video...xD

  • @bambula137 Thanks...

  • i just wish 1000/6000 grit stones weren't so expensive..

  • great vid man! really got into the bits and pieces about it.thank you for the excellent explanation. if you don't mind telling me that where did you buy that stone? and also what was the small white block that you rubbed on the 6000 grit i didn't catch what its called exactly, and was it bought from the same place as the stone? thank you very much! again really good vid!

  • @4shebby Thank you very much..the white stone is called a nagura stone and it can be purchased at the same place. You can get them at wwwDOTwoodcraftDOTcom.

  • great video, congrats!

  • @wiking3r Thanks..

  • Nice job! I need to spend more time inproving on sharpening......

  • i like to just go forward motion does the matter? for example when i sharpen i use a motion as if im trying to shave the stone or should i move the knife backwards?

  • @motomissle Its fine the way you use it. That is how I always used it. This method I find goes quicker and makes it shaving sharp....thanks

  • thx you helped me so mutch i have nearly the exsacly same stone as you only my one is 1000grit-3000 is that good enuf or do i need to invest thx

  • @247nyle You are welcome...No need to purchase...what you have will do.

  • @hajello913 Did you finally get it ?

  • @bushcraftbartons yeah man thx i just ordered it last night

  • Awesome vid. I just ordered some stones, and I will use this video to get stared. Thanks.

  • @1004w12 You are very welcome...

  • would you do the same honing with leather with kitchen knifes?

  • @MsOneiroi77 Absolutely as long as you do not put any kind of compound it would be ok..

  • @bushcraftbartons sorry whats compound Im new to this

  • @MsOneiroi77 No problem...compound is like a cream that contains light abrasive...people will use that to help sharpen the blade but for kitchen knives this compound may be toxic for food processing.

  • Mike,

I have a question for you. One of the knives i own has a slight negative curve to the blade. How can I sharpen this knife on a water stone?

  • @kanyonracerr1 You cant or you will damage the stone. If you are able, bring it back nice and straight and at the right angle before you use it.

  • Who manufactured the stone you are using in this video? Where did you purchase it from?

  • @TheWyzer I got it at....wwwdotwoodcraftdotcom

  • Outstanding video. Just bought similar stones, similar strop even. Sick of using oil as well, decided to try the Japanese stones. And again, like you, was using the same technique as you would on an oil stone. This seems to work and isolate the edge much better. Thank that Japanese guy for me, too.

  • @frankdrebin I will :) thank you...

  • Another EXCELLENT instuctional video Mike! You make it clear and easy to follow exactly how to sharpen with the water stones.

Thank You for your time, effort, sharing & for demystifying the proper way to sharpen a knife.

    God Bless & Happy Trails,

    Larry

  • @gwsears Appreciate your support Larry...thank you :)

  • Thanks again for this video, ...and the good technique I learned from you. Happy Day, Sepp

  • Picking on the pack of wolves eh?! heh he. Thanks for doing this video. I have held off on buying a good water stone for some time. Maybe when I have extra extra funds around I will make the leap. I can hear how smooth it was doing the grinds nor have I ever used a 6000 grit!

  • Very good work there buddy! Nice demo :o)

  • @Ggreenvideos Thanks Rich...

  • Awesome sharpening lesson. Thanks for making the video. I do the same thing you do except I use arkansas stones with water.

  • @benemyjosh Thank you very much...

  • Thanks for redoing this video as this will help many people learning. Thanks brother and God Bless,

    Tom

  • @1620416204 God bless you too...thanks for re-watching...

  • Is it possible to get a mirror image when sharpening your knife with the 6000 grit with the nagura stone like how Ray Mears did with his knife.

  • @1097411 Yes it is but its a lot of work...I will usually buff it to a polish...a lot faster.

  • Thank you for taking the time to redo this video.

  • @Acollyt Thank you for re watching appreciate it.

  • what brand of knife is that your using ?

  • @Smegger That was a simple puukko knife from Finland.

  • Thank you Mike. Your video was timely as I had just bought the exact stones you used and wanted some pointers on how to use them. I really appreciate your videos and the knowledge sharing.

  • @dclement7 Thank you...and I appreciate you watching.

  • Mike, thanks for the great information!

    Greg.

  • @busycando You are welcome Greg.

  • Hello dude. you can use water or oil on any stone. I use water on cheap synthetic stones. Note, that use of oil is proven to make knifes duller than sharpening without it. Its some strange US myth that oil should be used, not seen anywhere else in the world.

  • excellent video!!

  • norton stones are good

  • Cool water stone! Around how much do they go for and where could i find one?

  • @buscraftblowind try lee valley tools and icebear sharpening products

  • I love this video!! thanks for all your work Michael

  • @GopanBushcraft You are very welcome.

  • I prefer a water stone also, much cleaner to work with and gives a very nice edge.

  • this vid could have been 6 minutes long.

  • Could you do a vid on how and what you sharpen with in the field please?! Preferably with a convex knife. Just don't tell us what you use but SHOW how you do it. Thanks!

  • @kmango2 Sorry..I wish I could but I do not own any convex edge. Someday I will get myself one.
