The BMW movie, "Ambush", showcases this car... what a machine. It is among the best looking BMWs ever, IMO. Had to go for the Jaguar XJ Sport instead though, 2001 is too old and 2002 7 series are rubbish now.

I love my 1999 740il, looks great, handles unbelievable, comfortable and quick. A guy i know has a 2005 7 series...I think mine looks way better..yeah the E38 is the champ!

750il is a pain in the ass. Too difficult to maintain, 740 is a better choice, with a few mods you get more hp and it weighs less. I'm not saying 750 is a bad car, you just need a bigger wallet for maintenance.

I used to own a 2001 BMW 740i w/Sport Package. Despite the maintenance cost (and I had a warranty!), I loved the car dearly. It's potent, yet comfortable, fast enough and superbly luxurious. If you get one like mine you WILL only get 15mpg though.

Thanks for posting. I think that this is the best body BMW ever made for the 7 series, ever. We have a '95 740i and a '97 750il. I love them both dearly despite maintainence costs and fuel. I still get compliments every day when I'm out and about in either of the 7's. Thanks again mate

I own a 2001 740iL M Sport. This car is faster than a 90's Corvette I owned and you ride in luxury. The 740 is a wolf in sheep's clothing. I just love the way this car drives, handles AND looks! Best BMW ever made!!

Simply put - best BMW car. I'm lucky to have one of these babes. It's extremely agile for it's size and weight (more then 5 meters long, and about 2.5 ton loaded), 326HP engine is soooo badass! Interior is pure awesomeness, wood-style panels and very comfortable seats. Exterior design - perfection, aggressive and noble at the same time. New BMW 7er is nowhere near (total crap, if you ask me).

Hate the E60 series 745-750's. The E38 is the best car BMW ever designed. However, it's too bad '90's regulations kept the power down, the 4.4L could do so much more than 290HP, and 320ft lbs. Then again, that's what the aftermarket is for. The key with this car is getting the balance between tuner and conservative hit man right. Either way, Bangle needs to be locked in a shed for the next 3 model cycles at least, maybe just removed altogether. Honestly, when I saw the E60, I threw up a little.

I love the styling but BMWs (and all german cars for that matter) are vastly overrated quality wise, My 2001 728iSe is riddled with expensive and irritating faults both electrical and trim wise, its badly made basically, its not a one off either, both my mates E39 late model E34s are pretty crappy too!

Totally agree. The E38s have BMW soul in them. The newer BMWs are just "glam toys". To me anyways. The older BMWs like the E38 have the BMW heart in them. I love my E38 so much. Perfect car really. Great storage space, great power, interior, features. Had to replace radiator and water pump, wasnt cheap at all, but totally worth it. Cant beat the E38!!

I've just bought myself a 728i (E38) & it's absolutely the best thing i've ever owned. You would never expect such a big car to corner/handle so well but it takes the most extreme corners with ease, even at very high speeds. I can't actually imagine a car I'd rather own at this point in time

No it is definately not slow by any stretch. I don't blame you for asking though as you would think a car this size would need a bigger engine. I did some checking up online & apparently the 0-60 speed on a 728i is only 0.2 sec slower than a 735i (can't remember exact time but think it was 8 point something seconds) and yet the economy is much better. If you floor the throttle it flies! especially in sport mode.
