I remember how happy I was to thrash Jenova after this scene. Even more, I remember watching my sister play through the scene when she got to it a few days later. The wide-eyed hanging jaw of shock was priceless. One of the most powerful game moments of all time. Though Kefka's absolute destruction of the world was pretty high up there, too.
Anyone wanna play Name That Game Tune? Then check out my channel. 100 mystery game tunes for viewers to identify.
Although i was pretty moved by this moment, i wasn't really sad for what happened. I didn't really care much for Aerith (or Aeris, however you call her). The song made me sad. But i would care much more if one of my favorites died.
This scene makes me shed a tear pretty much every time I see it, and it is predominantly because of the music, but usually by about the time you get your three party members just starting at Aeris' corpse. It's that moment of finality when the game says "yep, she's not coming back, deal with it."
Unless of course Vincent is in your party, in which case he doesn't give a crap.
you cant show me this stuff *sob* i actually did tear up a bit at first i sat there emotionless with my jaw dropped and was like "why!?" but then her freakin theme kicks in and i feel a hot liquid in my eyes and the liquid drips down and hits my leg...only to find out they....were tears i couldnt believe it and a little later after i was so pissed i rampaged on jenova i realized...that it was possible for the use of a pheonix down
something that keeps bothering me from this scene is.
when aerith sinks into the river, Why cant you see cloud standing there in the underwater view as just a moment before you could see him standing till his waist in the water???
Because FF7 wasn't as polished as it should have been. A lot of mistakes like that are in the game. Then you have the down-right horrible translation. Still, it's probably in the top-5 best FF games.
I literally don't get why people think this is such a depressing moment. It's an epic gaming moment, for certain, but Aeris was kind of lame. It's not like it's the first time a main character in a FF has been killed off, either. Though the theme and the bouncing materia always touch me a bit. Still, I felt much more emotion during some scenes in 8 and 9.
Not gonna lie. Sephy fell like 50 feet, yet NOONE said anything on the way down? I just shook my head and said, They had enough time, they just didn't save her. You can't hold it against her for not seeing him, but when you had the whole crew there AND FACING THAT DIRECTION and not one person said a goddam thing, then there can't be any complaints about her dying.
By far, THE saddest moment in video game history. And the sadness of Aerith's Theme really makes it even sadder. The only other game that has ever made me cry was FFVIII, when Squall and Rinoa are on the bridge of the Ragnarok. Those were happy tears. This was just utter sadness. -sigh- Memories.
Phoenix Down potions are for waking people up when they are knocked out. They don't bring you back to life. I did ruin this bit for myself aswell though, my mother was shouting me through to get dinner the whole time and totally killed the mood. I was more upset when that Cait'Sith cat robot thing "died" as it was like 3am so nothing was there to disturb me.
Graphics over gameplay - Lufia 2 More meaningful death. Aerith - good for like 3 scenes. This being the best?... huh. Oh, and thx for letting me have enough time to reach her 8th limit break. (which is pretty pointless to strive for)
YOUR NOT SPOSED TO SHOW THIS! .... Its like in Lufia where dude just gets spear belly blasted.. gaming has its sad moments... Holy should have totally been a special materia you could wear.. didnt do anything, just to have her with you in some form... and getting her 8th limit break = Omg painful.
I was thinking about the same thing, if Square Enix do it right...oh my god...it would be the greatest work of art and the greatest peice of entertainment in the history of the universe.
i still dont see the sadness to this particular scene lol. maybe its bc i cant stand final fantasy. wanna see a REAL sad scene? watch the entire ending to MGS3 or MGS4, tears will be shed...if youve played the original games lol
One of the main reasons this pissed me off was because i got the bitch to level 50, my brother said it was the only way to beat sephiroth.. THAT LYING BASTARD!!!!!
was pretty epic that cloud seemed to be more powerful in jenova fight
its good but i would say its a bit overrated song.
maybe lower it a bit to like:14th place? 15th?
ff7 in general is a bit overhyped
Althoughi do admit,i was really sad the first time i heard this song, tears did fall, but it didn't have as much a dramatic effect on me as breath of fire 2 when you must live plays.

this is a reason why i love this game, u get so attached to the character, that when this happen (im against spoilers) ur sad it had to happen and everything afterwards feels so pointless until the game makes you feel otherwise. :)

Beside the retro FFs...I personally think 8,9 are the best...as for villians id probs have to say seymour is by far the most unique, has the most depth and is very intresting..
True , its a overrated game as all fuck. Nonetheless i do like the game, the characters and the world the designers created where interesting atleast to me wich drove me trough playing it
Truth and a half. That you genuinely cared about the characters is a testament to the game. I think for a lot of people, myself included this game...it was just a HUGE eye opener.
Agreed...makes u drop Jenova that much faster!! This song has to be one of the most heart felt and well known songs in gaming history!! I'm sure u real gamers out there agree!!
No, it tries but it was going to fail so the Life Stream helps it and finishes off the meteor...however, Midgar gets destroyed by the meteor and is subsequently covered by foliage and moss a couple hundred years nature, symbolically showing that nature prevailed over Shinra and the Mako machines.
always got from FF7 that the ending was pretty ironic and tragic in a sense, that what you were trying to protect all the game basically gets the better of humanity because of Shinra abuse. I pretty much thought every human died at the end of FF7 and that the nature and the planet kinda took over. Advent Children kinda ruined that ending for me.
I just thought it made sense with the theme the game was leaning to, that one day humanity could destroy itself if it became too greedy
He was right tho....u can play the music to listen...but u have to watch the scene to feel it...i'm sure all u gamers out there got choked up at this part to this music first time thru.
are the top 10 all going to be filled with FF themes because I have waited a long time and the list has been awesome so far but if they are all going to be FF themes I should just stop watching now
First of all, I'm sure lots of people watching this video have never played FF7. So maybe you shouldn't put the most monumental plot twist of the entire game as the first scene. Or maybe at least a *SPOILERS!* alert.
That said, fuck, what an awesome song and awesome game. The music alone make me want to go back and play this game through for the umpteenth time. God. IMO, best game ever. Seriously.
Wow, just wow. This kind of moment was a first for me in gaming, I couldn't believe it when it happened. Probably the first and last time I actually felt genuinely sad about something in a video game.
Pity nobodies ever been able to top that, makes me wonder what songs beat it in this chart.
When it comes to the best song in any video game...it's really hard to come close to this one.
This particular scene has the same impact on me now than it did during my first playthrough, and that was about 12 years ago. (I'm just finishing up my 6th playthrough now by the way).
Beautiful. Simply beautiful. The first time I saw this scene at the end of Disc 1, no less, I actually cried. It was the first time a game ever made my cry. I also like how the Aeris theme continues to play throughout the boss fight against the Jenova part.
yes I have back in the day. In fact, my fave character was Sid, my fave part of the game was when the group was exploring that eerie abandoned village and my most hated monster was the ruby weapon
I agree with you. The creator of this list placed so many spaces with RPG's, I've seen FF and Chrono Trigger too much now actually. There is so much more good music.
Well the fact of the matter is, the best of the best in terms of video game music is disproportionately located in the RPG genre.
Ahhhh... this part just reminds me how disappointed I am that Square (or any other company) has NEVER managed to top off this groundbreaking emotional moment in gaming, even 12 years later. I'm sure it's possible, I'm just waiting to see it.
Still gives me goose bumps when i hear this! So moving, so emotional. FF7 best FF game ever (6 comes very very close tho)

Leotribal 2 years ago
Many reasons ( forgive spelling for entire comment )
1. She was the only person in the game who could save the world from..........well since no spoilers should be said.............a problem.
2. Some people think aeris and cloud were the best couple. False in my opinion, but whatever.
3. In the game she had a kick-ass move. Sucked at everything else though.
4.She was someone in your team. I guess that counts.
There are probably more, but these seem to be some big ones.

ObsideoNwizarD 2 years ago 2
What really made this great was that the music continued while you fought Jenova. You fight the boss but your mind is still on Aeris the whole time.
eggsngaming 2 years ago 3
Yep, same here. The music continuing through the boss battle is a stroke of genius.

"Spoiler I guess" I have not played FF7 in a while and I was wondering if the materia that fell out was the one that stops the meteor. I'm not sure.
tk20028 2 years ago
No, it tries but it was going to fail so the Life Stream helps it and finishes off the meteor...however, Midgar gets destroyed by the meteor and is subsequently covered by foliage and moss a couple hundred years nature, symbolically showing that nature prevailed over Shinra and the Mako machines.

Thanks!

always got from FF7 that the ending was pretty ironic and tragic in a sense, that what you were trying to protect all the game basically gets the better of humanity because of Shinra abuse. I pretty much thought every human died at the end of FF7 and that the nature and the planet kinda took over. Advent Children kinda ruined that ending for me.
I just thought it made sense with the theme the game was leaning to, that one day humanity could destroy itself if it became too greedy

I'm surprised you haven't done the final level in DKC on SNES yet. One of my favorites.

are the top 10 all going to be filled with FF themes because I have waited a long time and the list has been awesome so far but if they are all going to be FF themes I should just stop watching now
Hazard590 2 years ago
Arguably one of the best out of ANY FF. Good spot for the tune!
effin0ninjas 2 years ago

Irishfreedom 2 years ago
When it comes to the best song in any video game...it's really hard to come close to this one.
This particular scene has the same impact on me now than it did during my first playthrough, and that was about 12 years ago. (I'm just finishing up my 6th playthrough now by the way).

The song is really beautiful. But i never liked FFVII, I got bored at CD1

I've always liked the way you fight the boss with Aeris' theme music still playin
gogosimonadebisi 2 years ago
i actually liked the video itself instead of the music this time. lol
Primalinstincts101 2 years ago

I hope the top 10 isn't all RPGs. There's so many other songs that are missing that need in.
Xyless 2 years ago 4
I agree with you. The creator of this list placed so many spaces with RPG's, I've seen FF and Chrono Trigger too much now actually. There is so much more good music.

Well the fact of the matter is, the best of the best in terms of video game music is disproportionately located in the RPG genre.
Ahhhh... this part just reminds me how disappointed I am that Square (or any other company) has NEVER managed to top off this groundbreaking emotional moment in gaming, even 12 years later. I'm sure it's possible, I'm just waiting to see it.
