  • @AFinalWarning Hey thanks!

  • dude these guys fucking suck balls

  • For the love of GOD will someone please tell me the chords?!

  • I just don't get this at all.. like this whole genre of music sorry people I try tho. Not hatin on anybody I just don't get it.

  • @joeyh31 That's because you have standards.

  • @joeyh31 its okay, its not for everyone.

  • The good thing about this video is that it'll never be touched by VEVO

  • i just feel sorry for people who can't feel this.

  • @Virvellian I feel sorry for people who can feel it.

  • this video is incredibly sweet in so many ways.

  • Makes me wish i was older man.. I wish i could just rock out in the street and not have people bitching about how simple a song may be along with other BS.. late 80's and early 90's scene looks like where i belong :p

  • this rules i'm feelin that dude who at 1:40 with the crucifix 'dehumanization LP' shirt! whaa cant wait for summer!

  • haha i love the kids dancing around at 2:06. that's awesome.

people can still play music in parking lots. nothing of importance is stopping us. i've done it, it's still fun.

  • @erinearthling

haha hell yeah! those kids are feelin the beat happenin vibe for sure!

  • i would give my whole monthly paycheck for a BH concert ticket, just to see them live..

Calvin, PLEASE call Heather and Bret, and start playing again!

  • @Starvoid7 you should check out the Hive Dwellers his new band.I saw them open for Built to Spill recently here in Olympia and they played to a packed Capitol Theatre COMPLETELY unmic'd (calvin just sang out into the open space) and they used quiet amplifiers!

it was amazing how much power they still had without the extra voltage.

  • I remember walking into a coffeshop/"culture" center in Gainesville Florida in 1998 or 97 and Calvin was in their sitting on a stool doing an impromptu Q and A for some college kids, most of whom were drastically unaware of who he was.. And he was so cool and nice.. Legendary video, legendary band.. I love good things from good people...

  • To be a teenager in the early nineties was about the best thing that happened in my life... this stuff will never happen again

  • Sometimes, the most diverse, complex chord progression and instrument virtuosity can never, ever, ever compare to the sweet, raw and beautific melody found in a simple and catchy song. Just awesome.

  • T H A N K Y O U

  • this is so indie

  • this music lifts me.

  • I love this so much youll never understand

  • I love the woman swinging her child in the background that really is great. ThATS THE SPIRIT! Listening to some great music getting into it and then moving on.

  • lol lady swinging her kid in the back

  • wonder how old that little kid walking infront of the camera, is today. she been in one of the best videos of youtube

  • I watched him with the hivedwellers and chain in the gang live last year he gave me his autograph it was awesome

  • Don't give up your day jobs!

  • i want to see them live SO FUCKING BAD!

  • beautiful

  • this is probably the greatest thing I've ever seen

  • @buendia87 Yeah, probably. :) Amúgy szia! :)

  • @PirkkoUnkarilainen szió! ezek szerint már két magyar szereti a Beat Happening-et..:)

  • @buendia87

    I second that.

  • um, fuck yes.

  • Calvin's music is so goddam moving especially on street corners.

  • Our band could be your life BOOK is so fucking cool icould read every chapter of it from dino jr to sonic youth

  • I JUST bought that book! I'm looking forward to it!

  • Why, for Keats sake..isn't anyone dancing? ...In costumes..

  • This is pretty bad ass. Another "wish I was there" sorta moment. K Records!

  • se pasaban de vergha tocando en la banketa jja

  • can anyone tell me what are the chords for this song??

sounds like D and Am but..it's not...: /

it doesn't sound right.. hep me out if you know!

  • eran la reata

  • buen video de humor...jajajjajaja

  • i dont think you watched it right.

  • thats stupid, its exactly that mindset from which all these poseurs crawled, if you don't like it, you don't like it. Its not that big of a deal.

  • The secret is in the book "Our Band COuld Be Your Life" - not just the chapter on Beat Happening, but on all the other bands in it as well. Reading about how the ethics of independent music and the community pillars, like Calvin Johnson on vocals here, really does something to the music when you listen to it - suddenly, it makes a lot of sense. I thought Beat Happening were really terrible before I read that book.

  • the secret is called taste

  • risingofnikita: personally, I enjoy everything about it. I enjoy the unpolished passion of the performance, I enjoy how they are playing in a parking lot 2000 miles away from their home for donations, I enjoy the melody of the song, I enjoy the words, I enjoy the scenery of people moving in and out of the picture, of little kids dancing and wandering around. What's not to enjoy?

  • what a beautiful sight

  • I just realized why Calvin sings the way he does...I think he was trained at karaoke night.

My favorite song of theirs, the whole album Dreamy is amazing. His voice can be offputting put I personally love it. :P So deep, plus the lyrics are beautiful.

  • this is one of my favorite clips on all of youtube. thanks for posting this!!!

  • Comment removed

  • This is awesome!

  • this is so awesome. i wished more bands were so minimal, or could do it so well.

  • lol ok buddy

  • love the old school grunge

  • nothing 'grunge' about this

  • It's not grunge, It's more Indie Rock/ Alternative/ Punk

  • the 3 dudes who walk in front of the camera at 1:35 are pretty grunge

  • Beautiful performance and video. I love Beat Happening so much!

  • p.s. look for the mom dancing with/spinning around her kid in the background

  • everything about this song and performance is amazing

  • Will someone please tip the band!! :D

    Go Beat Happening!!

  • I am proud to be from Olympia, Wa. Born and raised. So much great music here to this day.

  • its impossible to find beat happening in england, ive been to every record shop in my city and no one stocks them, its heart breaking

  • don't worry i'm in hawaii

  • or Ireland

  • go to your local independent cd store and ask them to order it

  • I bought all mine in a fantastic shop called Mrs Alive and Mr Dead in Berlin, very near Nollendorf U bahn. Don''t be heart broken. You could always ring up rough trade they might order it for you or go direct to K records. good luck.

  • thanks man

  • yeah this a great song, always feel like crying when i here this, everything of dreamy is good

  • God i love this song no wonder it's on Dreamy, i've been hearing that that's a great album, but I only have Jamboree. Guess it's time to go the Record store.

  • thank you soooo much for posting this!

  • does this appear on any of their records ?

  • yes, it's on their album Dreamy.

  • @bulimicveggie and was wonderfully covered by Pansy Division a decade or more ago

  • @JIHUSK I agree.

  • @JIHUSK

    こんな輝きのある日本のコメントを見たのは初めてです。素晴らしい。

  • These guys are great. Sadly, many cannot appreciate how good they are based on how different they are. Fucking narrow minded tards.

  • Whoa!!! Beat Happening playing in my hometown when I was a little 9 year old! I love this! Memphis used to be a good place, I used to be a kid, and Beat Happening is good forever!

  • muito muito bom !!!!!!

    indescritível !!!!!

  • it's funny--but seeing this-something i enjoyed and pretty much lived for during my youth--now it makes me see just how conservative i have become--kids and a mortgage can do funny things to a person-but it was great in its day!

  • I can't help it. I'm cracking up over here........

  • Well... Kurt Cobain Seemed to "get" this approach to sloppy punk. He had their label's logo tatooed on his arm.

If Rock -n- Roll isn't outrageous it's just pop crap.

  • Maybe I don't get it, but I was expecting a cover of the beatles parody instrumental. So you can imagine my distress when I saw this.

So much hatred towards pauliem, however I share his view wholeheartedly.

I don't even know what the fuck i'm watching right now; as a matter of fact.

  • Thank you guitarman. I've seen the Ramones, Stooges, MC5, Dictators, all of them live in concert. That's punk rock. This.....I don't know what this is.............But hey, I get it...

  • I don't even know how many times you commented on this video, but I hope your not one of those [original punks] who constantly has to remind people of your "punk rock" history of all that boring 1960-1970 rock and roll that only old boring [original punks] still consider "punk rock"

  • Well you're half right. I am an original punk rocker but it's not from 1960-70, it's more like 75-79............But hey, whatever.

  • you remind me of an old man

  • oh I get it, the guy's joking. Haha!

  • I love the singer's moves.

  • cry for a shadoooooooooooooooow

    love them.

  • Beautiful.

  • Beat Happening and that whole scene of purposefully naive music cracks me up. It so cool for some reason. Just people who can barely play, singing sons about kittens and shit.

  • The hot toddies you would love.

  • it has always repulsed me... faux immaturity... lame

  • kittens and shit.

  • You're right about one thing----It does crack me up. Cool? I'm not so sure about that.......

  • One of the all time great groups.

  • WTH..

  • no, not kidding at all--beat happening ruled & lots of people love them--they grow on you with repeated listening.

  • Exactly, Beat Happening were so inspirational to a generation of kids so fucking sick of commercial MTV bullshit that permeated every aspect of music. Bless Calvin for being a true helpful guide through the wasteland of late 80's music.

  • Adoro este video, a Calvin Johnson, a Beat Happening, y a esta canción!!! :-D

  • Oh yes!

    Love this one...

  • wow!

  • One of my all time favorites. Beat Happening (and Olympia) rules!!

  • I found out about BH in that old Sonic Youth biography. I remembered their name for awhile and checked 'em out a few years ago. Brilliant shit! Love the DIY/lo-fi punk.

  • When music was simple and great.

  • Reminds me of this one summer, when my 91 Toyota Corolla got so hot inside that it melted my The Jesus and Mary Chain cassette tape inside the player. This is EXACTLY what it sounded like. At this point keeping my Beat Happening records this long is like my mother packratting my kindergarten paintings. A wonderous collection of beautiful crap.

  • yah, I like that explanation. They are. Lowfi!

  • low fi!!!!

  • I don't trust anyone who doesn't get Beat Happening.

  • calvin johnson

  • bret lunsford

  • I remember this. I had no idea what was going on (I was 12 at the time) but I distinctly remember seeing this from across the street.

  • oh so cool...im still listening to black candy..does anyone know where i can find cast a shadow with kim singing? i had it years a go and thanks to some exs its gone

  • I love Beat Happening.

  • Friggin awesome song. Only two chords: G and C.

  • 3 chords

  • you're right... i'm sorry... it's G C and Am. i suck at life.

  • i love this song of beat happening.... i so wanna fly back to the late 1980s and go to olympia to see those guys...

  • My god you don't fucking get it.

  • Ha you think sloppy, raw is different than this? See, I view Johnny Cash "Punk Rock", he's not, but he acts as such. Punk Rock is more of a way of thinking, not of a way of acting.

  • OK, That's cool. I just don't think this is even near mediocre. I understand the attitude part but this music??? Come on........

  • Well that's your opinion. I mean, I don't understand why you hate 'em, they're not too loud and they're not annoying. Plus their lyrics aren't trite bullock shit.

And I will always be a fan of Calvin J.

If you don't like Calvin Johnson, then do you even like Elliot Smith? cause if you don't, wow, I don't want to talk to you anymore.

  • I know they're not too loud...but not too annoyimg?..........But you mention Elliot Smith? He was great. Elliot was one of the all time greats. No comparison there.

  • Well. Yeah. Then Do you like Dub Narcotic Sound System? It was Calvin J's band around the early and late 90s: it was white gehtto drag blast-funk at its best. Check 'em out, they're weird but also great. Kinda like Ween, only with more weird pitched man voices and wah-pedal'd basses.

  • You're this old and you're having petty arguments over youtube comments? You haven't grown up enough. Comment somewhere else.

  • Yeah, now that you mention it.....It is pretty stupid.

  • thanks for posting this! I heard first of beat happening on the early 90s, now, finally I got to see them!

  • Finally got to see them. Oh boy!!!!!

  • Are they back together!!!!?

  • that was humbling

  • FYI...Beat happening wasnt a big band, but they was a great influence to the grunge bands in the 90"s.

  • ok, now i understand why most of the grunge bands are scraps...

  • i was the baby that got swung around.time flies

  • That is so neat. What a great way to be captured in time.

  • no way

  • calvin maestro!!!1

  • 21 years old,maybe ....more or less

  • How old is this?

  • I love when the woman in the background swings her child...it's really sweet. And kind of funny.

  • cool!

  • genious, the best band for indie rock!!! classic.

  • hahahahahahaha

  • Or called a mental institution.

  • You have made me the happiest person on earth; Sheer bliss!

  • oly rules

  • haha this is so cool. "they have their own record label" haha when was this recorded?

  • Thanks dude, I was looking for BH videos for years.

  • open air beat happening is beautiful. seeing people move through the space is perfect. as a viewer you are there having a hieghtened experience.

  • god bless you realshocks. my life has been made better by watching this vid. no, seriously.

  • mine too!!!
