I've never seen a movie that combined so many different genre elements so well (comedy (intentional and unintentional), torture porn, horror, kung fu, suspense. b-movie, sci-fi, surrealism, drama), and it's all wrapped up in this massive core of sadness. One of the great existential films of all time, surely the most emotional credit sequence.
The fight scene in the lab shouldn't work at all, you should be laughing because of all the ridiculous cliches and tropes, but the music and performance bring it to another level, and makes what happens to an ugly girl in a frilly outfit and her hero who ends up launching pumping blood from his chest absolutely heartbreaking,
