Too much drinking and drug use destroyed his upper range (kind of like Chris Cornell). Even though he's been taking lessons again for almost a year, they just sound extremely weak.

@Neonmirrorblack well, he hardly (if ever) hit that upper range during his Nevermore days, so it's still too early to tell if he's lost it.

He's a much greater stage presence nowadays though. I can't name too many singers who can maintain that 'sinister' feel without going into 'cheeseland'.
