This thing has a very similar sound to my duncan twin tube blue, but the bass is a bit better defined and it definitely has the potential for more gain. I just really wish there was a "brick & mortar" store that had these in stock. $400 is a lot for something that I've only heard youtube demos of. I don't even know anyone who has one. I'm finicky about just how the preamp section (or a "pedal" preamp like this) distorts, specifically how it reacts to subtle variations in pick-attack.
Only if I werent running a Marshall Super Lead already lol. btw to anyone reading this (including PGS employees): I think my power tubes are going a tad dim on my Super Lead. I think theres KT-88's in them at the moment. I want a nice tonal balanced crunch that sounds like it growls out of this Marshall. Im not sure what pre amp tubes I have in there. 12AX7s? ANYWAYS,what power tubes, pre amp tubes, or preamp/power tube combonation would be good for this tone? Thanks!
@ThatBigMetalhead Judging by your handle... I should have expected you to say something like that. But come on man, you have to admit this has a glorious tone.
As a fellow guitarist I hope you can appreciate that.
can tube pedals make a shitty solid state sound like a badass tube amp?i know thats a stupid question but this pedal sounds like the best distortion pedal ever
hello andy!! got a question.. if i replace the 12ax7's with 12au7's and the 12at7 with a 12av7 will i manage to get a real clean tube boost like the rc booster?? i know you do this in the video but i didn't really get the "boost on/off" part.. did u also roll the guitar's volume pot? coz if the sound still remains overdriven after the swap, then it won't do the job for me.. thank you anyway, your demos are the real thing!
@TheSoyuken If all you need is an all-tube clean boost, try the Duncan Twin Tube Classic. With an overwound tele bridge pickup, it's squeaky clean on the rhythm channel with the gain at 11o'clock, and it can quadruple your signal on the front end of your amp if you peg the output volume. I set the gain on my PV Classic-30 to noon, a moderate crunch, then I step on the TT Classic, and it's high-gain like a 5150. You can get a "demo" of that setup in my uploads. I used it on all the heavier stuff.
Andy, could you please do a new review of the TS-9, because in the video you have on it sounds really fuzzy like. I was watching the video and I was kind of dissapointed.
I wanted to hear some real SRV tones and all, but it sounds so rock-like.
All the tube screamers dont sound like tubescreamers in your videos, howcome?
Effectrode is the bomb. My favorite setup is with alternate lower output tubes in the #1 and or #2 position. Sounds fantastic in front of my THD bi-valve 30. Problem with this company is you will want all the pedals. Also the quietest pedals you will find anywhere and won't jeopardize the tone in your tube amp. If you are protective of your signal path and tube tone these are some pedals to check out.
Sweeeet - but could I be bothered with messing about changing valves all of the time to get different tones - mmm - dunno - and it's uber expensive - great idea though for the tone hounds.
I never did like the tiny, thin distortion you get from dinky pre-amp tubes. I find it best to cram the big output tubes with an overdrive pedal. I think think the non-tube stomp boxes are far superior sounding. Like the Carl Martin Plexitone for instance puts this turd to shame. IMHO. I'll put my $40 DOD 250 slamming the front end of my Marshall 1987X Plexi up against anything. Any time.
hi, nice demo. i live in europe, can i plug the 12v adaptor into a socket in my house? the socket has 220v, if i cant, how do i lower the current? oh, can i order this pedal from pgs to all europe(i live in the iberic peninsule(spain/portugal)) or is it us only?, and if i can, do i pay a lot more? please help!!! tanks in advance! btw, do you sell anything that lowers the 220v and other stuff, if necessary(amperes, watts) to whatever i need to plug the adaptor and not destroy the beautyful pedal?
hi, very nice demo! im looking for the jimmy page like sound you get when you play ramble on with those 12au7s, is there any (cheap) tube amp that has that sounds like that? or can i just put those 12au7s in any cheap (+/- 500$) and get that beatifull jimy page sound? i'd really aprecciate your help! tanks in advance!
@ibanezman007 ive got the rocktron silver dragon (uses a 12ax7 tube) and it takes only about 10 seconds from the time i plug the pedal in till the time the tube is fully functional and hot. this might be just a little longer with 3 tubes but i doubt it. plug in and play baby!
I was wondering if you can use this pedal as a boost because I'm using an EHX English Muff'n as my main distortion and need something to boost for leads but I don't like TS type pedals
0_0 I think I'm in love... Would this be a good fit on a pedalboard in which it supplies overdrive tones next to a more traditional tube 'distortion' pedal, e.g. the tonebone plexi?
I'd love to hear this tube drive pedal using the 12av7 in position 1 with a strat and the tube-vibe. Then maybe a telecaster with the lower gain tube sound and the delta-trem. For some nice country-western guitar! Show us some effectrode pedals together!!! :) Please! I can't believe effectrode doesn't make an analog tube delay.
How important is the order of the tubes? Like would there be a difference in the results if I put a 12AU7 in the middle socket vs. the first one with two 12AX7s?
Like most pedals, the pedal's 'wall wart' requires 110v. So if you have a way of knocking down your voltave to 110v, you can plug in the supplied 12vdc adaptor.
@tommart123 You need a step-down transformer, otherwise you'll be running the pedal way too hot and components will fry like potato wedges in hot grease......bacon grease even....
@tommart123 Since it's supplied by 12VDC it's easier to just buy a UK 230VAC -> 12VDC power adaptor. Should cost you about £5 and you can power this pedal with it, regardless of which country you buy it in.
@tommart123 Since it's supplied by 12VDC it's easier to just buy a UK 230VAC -> 12VDC power adaptor. Should cost you about 5 quid and you can power this pedal with it, regardless of which country you buy it in.
@tommart123 you can get things called step down converters from most electronic stores, for not all that much all you need to know is the power requirements of the wall wart to determine how big your step down converter needs to be - be careful though, some bricks can take 110-240v, and the step downs are big and cumbersome, so use only necessary
I purchased this pedal a few weeks ago from PGS and got it soon after. I've had this pedal for a couple weeks now and this pedal is a monster. The 12AX7's produce a monster OD tone. With 2 12AU's it produces a really sweet clean boost. Phil at effectrode was phenomenal in responding to my questions also and kudos to him for that, oh and for making a bad ass pedal.
I have watched perhaps hundreds of these PGS vids, but this OD is something special. It stands out. Go figure, the tube sound we are all after, and which transistor based pedals attempt to emulate, is achieved best with... tubes! It is expensive at $400, but it is basically a tube amp in a box!
@kungpow79 It's not even close to a tube amp in a box. The tube sound we're all after is as much, if mot more, a product of an overdriven power section, not just the pre-amp.
Just got mine. Awesome tone and dynamic response from this pedal! The smoothest, creamiest, and most forgiving overdrive I have ever experienced. Definitely not a budget pedal, but it totally satisfies the difficult search for overdrive.
I want one of these too, but at the same time, the price ($399 in the US) is a bit high, especially when you consider that there are a few amps out there in that range that basically have preamps in them that are similar to this pedal. It just seems like too much to spend on a pedal when you could get the whole amp including this preamp for the same price. My classic 30 has 3 12AX7s, a 3 band eq, and 30 watt power amp, for the same price as just the 3 tube preamp. A bit steep for a pedal. But...
really cool video! im just wondering what to buy from you guys. option1 sweet honey overdrive from mad professor option2 effectrode tube drive option 3 both, how would these two sound together? Im a pop rock blues player with a deluxe reverb reissue , stratocaster with tex mex and an LTD emg 81 and 85 Id really apreciate some help since I need to put my wish list for christmas to get the money ontime. PGS ROCKS!!!!!
I recomend the GE NOS 5965 with dual getter (12AV7 equivalent). These are medium mu tubes, which interact well with the Tube Drive for a very smooth response. There are bargins to be had on this tube on Ebay.
at first when i saw this pedal, i was like wow a real tube version of a tube screamer, but the color is very misleading. this has much more cajunas then my 808, dont get me wrong it sounds very warm and nice, but this is reayy whaat u call disdrives, distortion overdrive,s very much like my fulltone ocd, i thought when i got that it would just also be like my ts 808. but i was wrong again. love ocd tho its like my marshall in box, and a hell of one @ that. and i know all pedals are not 808's
Does anyone know how well this pedal would work with a Mesa Dual Recto Road King? I'm looking for something that I can use to "boost" the dirty channels in my Mesa.
What type of sound are you going for? If you're just looking to "boost" the distortion I would just try a solid overdrive pedal. If you're willing to spend the cash Robert Keeley Pedals are absolutely phenomenal. Good Luck on the search!
i love the demos from you guys, and andy can obviously play, but his vibrato is FUCKING ANNOYING! please get somebody of his caliber to demo the gear, but has a vibrato, that doesn't sound like somebody, shaking in the cold! i thought that b.b. king's vibrato was bad enough, but andy's wins, hands down, for "worst vibrato EVER!!!!"
all i was saying, is that i don't like "overly fast", hand vibratos. it is like hearing "stevie nicks", sing! HORRIBLE! less b.b. king, and more david gilmour! (and i am talking about his hand vibrato, and not his whammy bar vibrato!) pretty much, ANY other guitar player's vibrato, ie, clapton, page, hendrix, jan akkerman, shall i go on??
Andy, I was going to email you and ask you if you would do a review of this pedal. This review is very timely and helpful. As far as I'm concerned, your reviews set the bar for the rest of the industry. Thanks again.
That sounds great! Thank God I have a JVM, otherwise I would have to spend a fortune everytime a good pedal is coming up. This pedal kills the Butler Tube Driver and probably every Overdrive I have ever heard.
ProGuitarShopDemos has the best demo/reviews of pedals ever. It's a perfect mixture of Reviewing the product while not overdoing it with constant talking. And while this is going on, the thing everybody wants to hear, the demos XD.
Ultimately, this pedal sucks. Did he show what the pedal can do all by itself unmodified, with 12AX7s throughout? No. You have the SWAP OUT THE TUBES to get any serious tone changes. What a joke.
Might as demo solid state pedals with different opamp chips in them as well.
Yeah he did. In the beginning, he demo'd with stock tubes. Also, swapping tubes doesn't make the pedal better, it just makes it different. This pedal is easy to customize, not upgrade.
So? All solid state pedals are MADE to have their chips swapped out. Otherwise, they wouldn't be put in sockets (just like this pedal). What's your point, if you have one?
pretty sure his point is you're wrong on multiple counts. you said he didn't show the pedal stock. wrong. you said the pedal sucks because the tubes can potentially be changed out. wrong, and also nonsensical.
it sounds great stock, and it sounds good with tubes swapped. different, but still good. it's made to be tweaked. quit bitching.
No, all solid state pedals are not designed to have the op amps swapped. Most of if not all of them are designed to use one chip. Most of them do not use sockets. There isn't even close to the same amount of difference between all of the 4558 based op amps in the world and between any given 12AX7 and a 5751 tube.
Also did you play with it's balls?... There's an internal trim pot with that lovely name on the circuit ball to further tailor the tonal possibilities.
I can't wait to drive the unit even harder with their upcoming tube driven boost pedal, the Fire Bottle!!! It's a great time to be a guitarist...
I have Tube-Drive #0001 and couldn't be happier. Forget your "tube like" and "amp like" pedals. This doesn't simulate anything, IT IS a tube driven preamp to add to your rig, an outstanding unit in every way.
Andy, I was interested in your use of the 12AV7, not long after getting mine I put one in the same position and that is my favorite setup.
I've been hoping you'd demo this ever since I heard this pedal on the Effectrode website and saw you were demoing a lot of their other pedals. I can't believe how amp-like and explosive it sounds. Best, most tube-like OD pedal I've heard by a wide margin! Too bad it's so crazy expensive!
What type of sound are you going for? If you're just looking to "boost" the distortion I would just try a solid overdrive pedal. If you're willing to spend the cash Robert Keeley Pedals are absolutely phenomenal. Good Luck on the search!

Thanks for doing such a great job on this demo video - you've really captured the sound of the Tube Drive - Phil (Effectrode)

@effectrode Ah, perfect, where do you sell your pedals and how much do they go for? I'm in canada by the way :)

i love the demos from you guys, and andy can obviously play, but his vibrato is FUCKING ANNOYING! please get somebody of his caliber to demo the gear, but has a vibrato, that doesn't sound like somebody, shaking in the cold! i thought that b.b. king's vibrato was bad enough, but andy's wins, hands down, for "worst vibrato EVER!!!!"
1013301 2 years ago
If you have a problem with BB Kings vibrato.. well that just speaks for itself.
ProGuitarShopDemos 2 years ago
all i was saying, is that i don't like "overly fast", hand vibratos. it is like hearing "stevie nicks", sing! HORRIBLE! less b.b. king, and more david gilmour! (and i am talking about his hand vibrato, and not his whammy bar vibrato!) pretty much, ANY other guitar player's vibrato, ie, clapton, page, hendrix, jan akkerman, shall i go on??

This is a very nice pedal. But not one I'd pay $399 dollars for.

Andy, I was going to email you and ask you if you would do a review of this pedal. This review is very timely and helpful. As far as I'm concerned, your reviews set the bar for the rest of the industry. Thanks again.

Buy the Fairfield Barbershop instead... Much more original and personal OD tone (BTW love the new music during Andys introduction)

You could just buy a tube amp for 400$ and get overdrive..
JmAA7192 2 years ago 31
...and/or a studio guitarist to come play a $4,000 tube amp for you.
Seriously though, I have a few smaller single-ended tube amps that would really benefit from the extra gain stages.

Thank you for these

Fabulous sound with all 12AU7s... the others were good but not as nice as that. Personal opinion, of course!
bloodySunday77 2 years ago 2
Ultimately, this pedal sucks. Did he show what the pedal can do all by itself unmodified, with 12AX7s throughout? No. You have the SWAP OUT THE TUBES to get any serious tone changes. What a joke.
Might as demo solid state pedals with different opamp chips in them as well.
jspartacus 2 years ago
Yeah he did. In the beginning, he demo'd with stock tubes. Also, swapping tubes doesn't make the pedal better, it just makes it different. This pedal is easy to customize, not upgrade.
ibzbucket 2 years ago
Yeah, I didn't really like it.
paparazzi3p 2 years ago
he did demonstrate the 12ax7 tone. But, even if he didn't, the pedal is MADE to have tubes swapped out.
ruffles272 2 years ago 2
So? All solid state pedals are MADE to have their chips swapped out. Otherwise, they wouldn't be put in sockets (just like this pedal). What's your point, if you have one?
jspartacus 2 years ago
pretty sure his point is you're wrong on multiple counts. you said he didn't show the pedal stock. wrong. you said the pedal sucks because the tubes can potentially be changed out. wrong, and also nonsensical.
it sounds great stock, and it sounds good with tubes swapped. different, but still good. it's made to be tweaked. quit bitching.
usedtobias 2 years ago
No, all solid state pedals are not designed to have the op amps swapped. Most of if not all of them are designed to use one chip. Most of them do not use sockets. There isn't even close to the same amount of difference between all of the 4558 based op amps in the world and between any given 12AX7 and a 5751 tube.
fucksalottasluts 2 years ago 2
It takes two seconds to swap a tube out. It's part of the functionality of this pedal. Don't be a moron.

The effectrode site says there's a 'helios fuzz' coming out.. That sounds even interesting imo!
NJlo 2 years ago
Also did you play with it's balls?... There's an internal trim pot with that lovely name on the circuit ball to further tailor the tonal possibilities.
I can't wait to drive the unit even harder with their upcoming tube driven boost pedal, the Fire Bottle!!! It's a great time to be a guitarist...
Bluesburst 2 years ago 3
I have Tube-Drive #0001 and couldn't be happier. Forget your "tube like" and "amp like" pedals. This doesn't simulate anything, IT IS a tube driven preamp to add to your rig, an outstanding unit in every way.
Andy, I was interested in your use of the 12AV7, not long after getting mine I put one in the same position and that is my favorite setup.

one problem with this pedal, and that's that a vintage BK Tube Driver can be had for less.

that's a nice pedal but very expensive, I have a great tube amp luckily but this would be very nice if i needed a different tube drive sound
senojnomis 2 years ago 2
Best sounding pedal proguitarshop has in stock. I think better than the Sweet Honey Overdrive.
hendrixkixas 2 years ago
I've been hoping you'd demo this ever since I heard this pedal on the Effectrode website and saw you were demoing a lot of their other pedals. I can't believe how amp-like and explosive it sounds. Best, most tube-like OD pedal I've heard by a wide margin! Too bad it's so crazy expensive!

man this guy gets his hands on some cool stuff.
Love the demos... I would love to work for this kat!
