@caterhamnut G'day... Well done. Very nice work..! It occurs to me that you have the skills to make yourself a SunFoil, for whatever you drive on the public roads. Retrofit with a Streamlined PV to hold the Battery full, so the Alternator isn't Re-Charging. So it isn't an Electromagnetic Drag- brake, step-up belted to the Crankshaft..! Search 'SunFoil FAQs' or 'S. Short-Talk' to measure y'r Car for PV size. Construction Clips are at my Playlists. (SunFoil Project). DIY.
@lanzecki Hi - it was (for almost 50 years) but when Caterham switched production a few years ago, it changed to welded steel. Plenty of debate as to which is 'best'!
@caterhamnut WHY would they go back to the Progress Radiator approach of welding? Chapman went through hoops "proving" the brazing did not anneal the adjacent steel tubes providing a stronger overall tubes/joint integrity.
I aqdmire your workmanship. I'd like to fit my series III DeDion with carbon fiber clamshells and series 3 Lotus (NOT Caterham, I require the longer lower Lotus version) nose cone. Any sourcing for those components as yet?? Thanks!
Not really, but I know what you are saying! Arch replace front ends regularly (after race weekends) so they tend to have a pile ready made up. We went through the whole chassis with Bruce beforehand to see what we could replace/leave alone. To be honest, the new long front was a bit of a luxury, but I wanted the more up to date front sus. pick up points. Of course, there is also the issue of Arch selling complete chassis ;-) and anyway, it means the cars 'heart' is at least original! cheers.
hey, how come you are having to chissel out the rivets? Could you not just drill and punch them through? Its just i did exactly the same thing to my superseven las weekend. Also did you do all the chassis work yourself? And who re skinned the chassis and did you get all the parts from caterham? cheers, ben
a brazed joint allows a certian amount of flex in the chassis which prevents welds cracking. Many historic race cars and single seaters are done the same way for that reason.

Isn't that called fillet brazing...? And yes, lots of racing car frame were done this way.

Did you add the rear Watts linkage pick-ups or were those there from new?
paullubliner 2 years ago
We had those added, just in case! Not using them yet, but they are there if we do ever want to convert.

Are the joints brazed or welded?
thedomonator 2 years ago
