Because "eternal" is a time-based concept. Time existing for eternity is like a ruler existing throughout it's length, even though it too has a beginning and end. It's a bit of a semantics argument.

Can anyone explain to me why the universe and time cannot be infinite? Like a piece of string with the ends fused together, a self-contained cycle? What if I took the doorstop and wrapped it around into a loop?

The idea is that if time were infinite, it would not be a sequence of events. There is no beginning in a loop, or end, and so there wouldn't be a first moment, a second moment on and on until the end. The consequence would be that if time was not sequential, we would not have been lived up until the present. But really, no one REALLY knows the nature of an infinite. The only "experts" we have on the subject are theoretic mathmeticians.

I love how he simply ASSERTS that fine tuning and "design" are not likely without a designer.

Setting aside the fact that such "fine tuning" leads to a universe that is about 99.999999% inhospitable toward life and that we can only tell if something is designed because it DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE NATURAL (thus making it literally impossible to say that nothing is designed if nature itself is designed), he never supports this premise with reasoning, and thus his argument quickly falls apart.

A tip though, I'm sure you typed up a script and read it off your computer, but I would recommend looking into the camera more, as well as trying to sound more natural, instead of like you're reading out loud in a class room.

I believe matter exists infinitely. It cannot be destroyed and it cannot be created, although it can be divided an infinite amount of times. I also believe there is no limit on density.

So you cannot have an infinite number of finite things, because no thing is finite.

I get so sick of all these venomfangx videos. He has no understanding of physics beyond simple common knowledge newtonian mechanics, which are simple to describe with trigonometric functions and algebraic formulas. I have studied calculus based, and differential based physics which explains in detail the structure of the universe. Also at my level of physics it takes years not hours, days or months to understand. I would love to give shawn 1 question from DFQ and have him explain every step.

Hm. I guess you interpreted my confusion a different (and neat) way. My problem was his use of both the word "actual" and "exist". When the phrase "actual infinities" is uttered, what is implied is the existence of infinities. He should have said: "Infinities cannot exist", not "ACTUAL infinities cannot exist."  Actualities=existing-things. Adding the word "actual" didn't add anything to what he wanted to say.

The reason we can infer design from looking at Mt. Rushmore is that it looks like human beings, namely, four U.S. Presidents. We could not look at humans themselves and infer they were designed, because humans could have looked like anything. It's the same thing with VFX's plasticine earth. We can conclude that the model earth is designed because it looks like the real earth. The real earth, however, didn't have to look like anything in particular.

There is nothing special about the shape of the earth's continents and oceans. If we saw VFX's model earth without knowing what the real earth looked like, we would just think it was a ball with blotches of green and blue paint.

Mt. Rushmore looks like human faces because it was designed to resemble them. Human faces look like human faces because humans inherit genes from their parents, who are also human.

I'd actually like to add that even if you take this and add in some things which weren't designed to look like human faces( Jesus appearing on tortillas?) we're just simply wired to see patterns and faces, we're especially great at seeing faces, so even where no design is present, we will see design in it, especially if you're going into a situation looking for design.

Hardly, there are far too many Christians, myself included, who do not at least try to spread what we percieve to be the Truth, Good News, Gospel etc.

While I often do not agree with VFX's personal interpretations, attitudes, approaches, nay, even beliefs, I admire his commitment and determination, qualities which are severely lacking in many people, theist, deist and atheist alike.

If we have anything to be ashamed of, it is our own inactivity, apathy and past atrocities (see 'Crusade').
