I've always wanted to see this movie. I think Oscar Wilde was one of the greatest playwrights of the English language. And if anyone was going to play him, the legendary Stephen Fry seems like the best candidate to be a re-incarnate of Wilde.
Unfortunately I've never obtained a copy of this film, but I'm sure I'll find it one day. How accurate is this film to Wilde's actual life?
@JimmySteller I honestly couldn't answer you on that one but I have read some of his plays but not studied his life. But I should imagine it is pretty acurate with Fry playing him because I don't think he would have took the job if it wasn't.
@JimmySteller It depends on your point of view - it is reasonably faithful to the Ellmann biography of Wilde so yes it is. But if you are aware of the unfairness towards Douglas in his book (and in others) then you may find the film more frustrating.
That said, it's a sumptuous drama that's definately worth catching. Stephen Fry is marvellous, Jude Law is just indescribably beautiful and Tom Wilkinson is wonderful as the Scarlet Marquess.
Hey guys! Just thought I'd let you know that Michael Sheen got in touch with me over twitter and said "Thats great. Thanks for that." - short and sweet but its Michael Sheen! Runs around like a mad woman! :-)
Having been an English major in school, I've read several works by Wilde, and this is a film that I've always been curious about. Keep the classic DVD reviews coming :)
@Beau1618 I know Wilde is amazing - I knew you would have seen it. I sent this to Stephen Fry in hope that he would see it - probably dreaming there haha.
Thanks, the title sequence is done by a guy called Simon Jeffrey - he is in my "people you should subscribe to" on main channel. I love cartoon me! lol.
@Screamqueenarmy Ah I love biopics! I'm crazy about them. Ray is brilliant, one of my favourites is Walk the Line, currently reading Cash's book too. I'll prob be doing reviews on both of those! :-)
I saw Vincent Price play Oscar Wilde on stage! It was just a one man show where Wilde was in his last years in a hotel in Paris. Are you using florescent lights? That might be the problem.
@simonjeffery13 Yeah the lights were on but for some reason the light and sound goes terrible in tht part of the room. :-( But it the only space with blank walls, unless i do it in my hallway :-)

i'm not a HUGE fan of biopics unless it's about a person i'm interested in like Ray Charles or Che Guevara, but a GREAT review nonetheless

@ripporter OMG wow, thts amazing!!!! Vincent Price, bet that was amazing.
Yeah, I can't afford lights - which is a shame. I'd love to have a room to make into a studio and stuff but too poor.
Maybe if I make partner any time soon I can start saving :-)
Brighteyeslonglashes 1 year ago
Nice one! You should turn on a few lights though next time ;)
