No matter how well the written all those flashback stories were, in retrospect they were irrelevant and had no real bearing on anything. Characters don’t need complex back stories to be interesting.
The flashbacks would have been well done had this show known where it was going, and each character had been written a bible and character outline first season. I agree that they were irrelevant, but I think in some ways they made the character seem deeper.
Speaking of ironies; the man who narrates a make-fun of a show also happens to be a dedicated fan of it.
