Sort of a small outlines, often silhouettes giving a basic definition of a drawing. Like a thumbnail of a picture on your computer is a small preview of the full thing.
Just feed your creativity by trying to imagine the marionette in your brain. It's quite important to be able to understand space and all three dimensions.
i personally bought some cheap plasticine for £1.99 as opposed to spending £30 on a wooden.. man.. plus those wooden things arent very flexible and poses are limited. buy plasticine and model you can pose yourself :)
basically you load up a standard square brush set first, chose one of those square brushes, press F5 (in windows photoshop cs3) and play around with it's settings till u get something similar to this painter brush from the video. For instance go to "shape dynamics" and set the control for angle jitter as "direction" and so on.. just fool around with those settings
I'm pretty sure he is using Photoshop actually. Long rectangular brush (you can see the shape in the video) with size and/or opacity set to vary based on pressure. Oh, and angle set to vary based on direction.
And yes, he's using a graphics tablet, it's the only way to get the variation he does with the opacity of the brush.
thanks sinix!! im so glad you chose to put this up even when you had doubts about it. much appreciated!

Do you think purchasing one of those wooden marionettes is a good idea for character reference?
I ask because your guy at 4 mins looks very similar to that.

Very relaxing and informal style of work. Makes the approach to creation a joy rather than a frustration. Happy mistakes are great!
