  • Great job peter. I've been following your work and i think what you created deserves merit. With that said, I've been looking for a solution to using the two pointers in linux and you certainly got it done. But, is there any way to keep both pointers active meaning the fist pointer always stays on the screen but the following pointers go away until the mouse moves again. If you could help me with this that would be greatly appretiated. Once again, Great job Petter!!

  • The images are projected... old technology.

  • @florincosma Of course it's old technology, it's an old video.

  • sorry...my 'huh?' comment was just a test. go to nuigroup com and you will find lotsa discussion and tutorials in doing such multitouch screen.

  • huh?

  • What is this touchscreen? Where can I find this?

  • @thierryvdb

Surface doesn't do keyboards and foci.

It seems to also need modified OS, hardware, and programs.

Btw I thought it needed fvwm

what touch screen does Linux support?

  • i just got this set up in about a half hour and its amazing

  • that's totally amazing!

    <3 it!

  • this will be on the OLPC XO-2

  • This is art.

  • Not a huge M$ fan but microsoft (6 Years using only gnu/linux ) surface seems much nicer , maybe with compiz would be better.

  • @thierryvdb its only raw xserver... it's a techdemo of the technic witch lies behind the most Linux Distros not a Designdemo

  • @thierryvdb

someone has done it with compiz

  • Sweet! Is that Linux I see...

  • secciii :o

  • Has this been integrated into mainstream Xorg?

  • There has been some work for the support of multiple pointers. (i.e. fingers)

  • the next release of xorg will have it integrated. i believe all the major distros including fedora, ubuntu, and i think opensuse, will be using the next xorg in their next release, or at least their next stable release

  • please do one of these with compiz fusion installed PLEASE

  • there is

  • Porque está iluminado de los 2 lados?

  • 4 minutes of touchscreen....less than 1 minute of multitouch video....

  • I wonder how well this will work on a Mini 9 modded with a touch screen running Xubuntu. **Plans for the future**

  • where do i get the software i hear it isn't in default X

  • wooo! this is better than MS Surfice ... !!! cool

  • lol... I agree

  • ok, not bad... does the video projection need to be done in front and the ir behind or can you do it the reverse way around? I guess not or the ir would be in shadow all the time... I spose it has its uses.

  • hows the separate color selection for the multiple users work?

  • good question.

  • I'm no expert on this, but my best bet is this:

That drawing app is designed for MPX, so it knows that there is more than one pointer. When it's drawn on, it "remembers" what pointer selected what color.

  • Of course, but the question was - How does it remember? It's not like dragging a mouse. You can lift up your hand, and proceed at another point. So, how do you know which finger is which pointer, if you will.

Actually, in the meanwhile, I found out. Turns out that each man has a different electric potential (different charge), so on that, it determines the user. But if you do it

with two hands (1 user), the charge is same, so there's no way to determine which hand you're using at what point.

  • The multiple colours are based on timing. If the guy on the right had lifted his hand at the wrong time, it would have reversed their colors. Basically, the selection of a colour is a click, which requires a down and an up event. It associates it with the pointer that creates the next down event.

Tuning the timing on these systems is a pain. You may have noticed a glitch where, when they were both drawing in the same window, a grey line was created between them.

  • timing, nice stuff, i wonder if it is possible to make a glove with a chip and that refers to the active mouse, so it knows witch is witch

    [that explication just sucked]

  • DUDE!!!! this is awesome! I wish I had a monitor like that =[

  • It's not a monitor, it's a projection onto a touch pad.

  • Real nice man. I have been building my own Multi touch system at niceminds dot com you should check it out.

  • The lag in Google Earth is because of rendering delays, not pointer delays. Obviously they use an old / cheap graphics card. The amazing thing about this vid is that it showcases unmodified applications, i.e. Firefox, running alongside multi-touch aware aplications. This is very hard to achieve, considering that both Windows and X were designed with a single pointer in mind.

  • how do you type?

  • it automatically knows what you want to type! its like the jesus computer!

  • That's done by a new system designed by microsoft, called a keyboard.

  • what is name of the song ?

  • "Lightin" by Antony Raijekov

  • public link of software please

  • public this software for linux link please

  • Pow, até a música copiaram da Microsoft...

  • como se a MS inventasse algo.. ¬¬''

Se vc nao sabe o surface eh uma copia do diamond touch...

  • This kind of 'touch' isn't that 'touch' I wanta. It's traditional as used in PPC!

  • cool!!!

  • This is the Linux version of the Microsoft Surface and not only is it cheaper it works better too.

  • That's the point. You don't need to buy giant $10,000 table when you can achieve a similar effect using a "Smartboard style" setup. Plus, this type of setup should apply to any touch surface, including tablet PCs.

Another plus for the MPX is that it runs standard Linux applications. The Surface, as far as I'm aware of, doesn't let you customize it very much. You only get to use what comes with the Surface & that's it.

  • not multi touch but smartboard like. SB is still fun to use.

  • Yes it is, look at 1:30

  • Fucking fake... u can see clearly that the image is projected on the screen!!! Look at the arm of the guy who is using it. On the arms shadow, you see, nothing is on the screen.

  • That's how it works, even Microsoft's Surface works the same way only they use an LCD not projection. There are cameras that detect your hand are under the screen, as MS uses, or above it as MPX uses.

  • Du! of course it's projected on to the screen thats why it's so cool!

  • What is new here!? All this kind technology are more than 20 years old!? MS Surface or any Linux touch-screen did not surprise me, is only new adjustment's for old techonolgy. The only thing new about this demos, is this kind of products, are fashion now. Today, everybody runs like crazy to few stores to buy a new gadget at middle-night, and see next day, that product in every places, more cheap and bether too.

  • Right Microsoft can't come up with anything new. Linux just tries to appease people and since it does not get viruses and crashes less it's better anyway.

  • It seems nice but it doesnt do the connecting thing of Surface (MS) like putting your pda or phone and being able to transfer stuff...

  • wow...

  • + + +

  • I'd like to see a touch version of Pong or air hockey for two people. Now that would be awesome!

  • like i care!!!! i still love windows interface plataform, the disign of the case and dvd realy works for his 500 usd +/- 400 euros in Portugal

  • It's far from surface

  • ddorent, really, GO DIE

DO YOU WANT TO PAY 10 GRAND FOR 'M$ Surface' or do you want to DO THIS YOURSELF, and then get to brag to your friends?

    retard.

    Awesome video.

This is why Linux rules all

  • lol i just noticed, he's using AWN :)

    It's a Linux dock.

    hah

He's also using GNOME i think.

And the only reason for the slow response time during the paint program, was, think of it, the amount of data MPX was trying to render.

His screen is the size of the TV in my living room, and the computer was trying to write large data to the picture uncompressed in real time.

  • That has nothing to do with it. It was a projection and that is why it was big.

  • Oh, the concept is similar to the one of MS Surface. Who cares? If you want to pay for it, then do.

  • Awesome video, and great work on the setup. I am seriously considering creating one of these, what resolution does are you using on your projector?

  • crap. very slow response.

  • when mac creates a shit like this no windows or linux can work agaist it

  • This is the reason Linux will win in the end.. ALWAYS staying up to date as much as possible and staying free and open all the way through!!

  • This video is completely plausable. Check out the reacTable, MS Surface, and CityWall. These type of interfaces are becoming pretty popular, so get used to it. They typically consist of visual tracking software, infrared LEDs, a slightly modified digital camera, a piece of frosted lexan, and a projector. If the infrared LEDs provide enough contrast, it doesn't matter which side the projector is placed. There's also capacitive, acoustic, and LED displays.

  • I don't understand where that green light over the hand comes, when the hand passes over an image. In fact, it seems that the whole image is been projected over the surface. Weird. How's it? Isnt it a screen?

  • to all the smartasses screaming FAKE it demos software not hardware

  • Want!

  • it's not fake, it's linux, look at hardware dot info

  • The Video is fake! Look at the hand and the arms. There you can see the pictures of the "screen".

  • fake fake fake

  • It's not a fake, it's using a projector.

  • the mac have something like this ???

  • Really it is a lot better than MSoft. It is using a proyection display, so you can use it already with your standard hardware (digitizer table plus projector, or webcam to capture hands plus proyector, etc... A microphone in the table can capture the tap and double tap (er, click and double click) if you havent got sensors.

  • cool!

but ever heard of a wacom cintiq???

  • beautiful engineering!!!!!

  • here comes the competitor of micro$oft surface. can't wait longer to see it and touch it. this is simply amazing!

  • F0CKING amazing among that i hate Linux, but amazing shit anyways, and good music for background that as a very relaxant music ^^ one way to go to minority report xD

  • What the HELL do you hate Linux for? o.O

  • simply because is very hard to install everything, and because of the sistem update the programmers need to learn how to upgrade systems with the so hatred micrososft, iam tired of this kind of topics, every single OS have the good points and the bad points! i only prefer the windows plataform...

  • Obviously you need something easy, because you can't even spell properly.

  • The Ubuntu repositories have over 20 000 packages in them. 90% of the programs you will ever need can be found there and installed with just a few clicks. The program downloads, installs and solves depencies for you, The repository is also virus-free (like Linux generally).

    What's so hard about that?

  • Anybody know what song that is?

  • Nevermind. Music credits are at the end.

  • doesn't the screen get blurry from touching it?

  • It's being projected onto the surface.

  • heh oh

  • lol @ # of tards commenting on this...ZOMG microsoft is better! I bet you all think MS invented multitouch and you can't see how this is useful because you are only spoilt little teenagers with very few friends and a bad masturbation habit.

  • oh yea, I forgot to make my comment about this. Yea, pretty funky. Not as funky as Surface but cheaper I guess. Meh...

  • man that pc was lagging out bad haha

  • agreed Microsoft surface is better...and they are useless as an office tool but good applications for other industries, especially when they are able to detect and read mobile phones and credit cards

  • WTF would you do with touch screen computer exactly? COMPLETE waste of money, the ONLY good thing from this thing is really usefull for graphic designer or architectures. everything else is just stupid.

  • this is awesome, but it downs me a lil that its not presented as a "touch screen" but more of a pad? because it is using a projector not an lcd type screen.

    thats what it seems.

  • Microsoft Surface is better.

  • why's it so slow? is this a livecd? or just a shit pc? XD

  • EWW, why did they go with a front side projector method. Its horrid. Also, what a bad demo.

  • god, the guy doing the demo has major a.d.d. i mean he's drawing and then playing with a calculater, wtf man

  • Any sort of touch screen would be much more intuitive for a portable device, but there is so much LAG here. Did you see how many times he had to try to get that Google Earth map to move? If this wasn't so laggy, and someone made it out of good thick glass with a nice screen behind it, I would find this more of a "I want that" type thing. But this just seems poorly done.

  • not very impressive....

  • This is one of the poor examples of multi touch out there

there are far better examples, if you watch anything from "ted" you can see that

  • It looks like it needs a little more work. Desn't seem like it is following the users too well....

  • The music playing is Lightin by Antony Raijekov. Apparantly I can't post the URL to it, stupid YouTube. Find it on ctgmusic dot com.

  • music please?? it's darky and wonderful

  • The music playing is Lightin by Antony Raijekov.

  • THX!

  • Meh.

  • What's the name of the music playing?

  • The music playing is Lightin by Antony Raijekov.

  • awesome. nice ... could it be used on a clear vertical glass or perspex panel!?

  • everything is gimmicky until its in use....

  • Whats track is playing??

  • The music playing is Lightin by Antony Raijekov.

  • I have most of that on my iPhone right now--today. At least the useful parts--a lot of this stuff is pretty gimicky: for show and not of practical use.

  • Squee! This makes me so excited! If I don't have a DiamondTouch, FTIR or MS Surface, can I use a wacom or something for single touch blob events so I can start writing applications?
