This, and Tennessee Ernie Ford's version, are the two best versions of this terrific song, for my money. Auntie had this on a 78, and I'm sure I about played it to death, along with "The Thing," and "Bump on the Head Brown," which was the B side of one of those 2 records.
@musicmandon1 I agree, and this is also one of my favorite gospel songs. We still sing it at my church occasionally. I think I have a copy of The Thing. I'll start looking through my collection to see if I can find it and get it posted. That's definitely another great song.
Hey do any of you might know someone who would want to buy a Phil Harris ORIGINAL LP? I have an old album of his that my grandmother gave me and its not kinf od music but I know there is someone out there who would want to buy this for their collection because it was big. Its called ON THE RECORD WITH PHIL HARRIS and it has Thats what I Like About the South, downtown poker club & more, its a "musical smart set" email me if anyone is interested: TonyTheBigDeal@gmail.com
Before both series had the luxury of being "transcribed" in advance after 1950, Phil indeed had to literally race from CBS halfway through the Benny program to get to NBC in time for his own series.
OL` Phil was just too cool!!! I Have a couple of his Lofner-Harris Orchestra, Records From the early 30s. Those Orthophonic Brass Reproducers are the best! You are VERY Lucky to have one! Thank You So Much For Shairing.
Actually, it was from 1946 through '54 {"THE FITCH BANDWAGON" from '46 through '48, then "THE PHIL HARRIS-ALICE FAYE SHOW" after 1948, first for sponsor Rexall Drugs ['48-'50], sustained ['50-'51], then RCA ['51-'54]}. Phil did appear on Jack's program before his own (usually leaving halfway through to dash to his own studio to prepare for the start of HIS show at 7:30pm(et) from '46 through '50, then both were "transcribed" [pre-recorded] in advance, and things went easier) until 1952.
I knew I was kind of close. Thank you once again. Any extra info. is always appreciated. I think it was hard going back and forth to his and Benny's show. They were both at NBC starting out, and then Benny went to CBS in '49.
This was recorded around 1947, at the time Phil Harris was featured on "THE JACK BENNY PROGRAM" (along with the Sportsmen Quartet, who back him up on this one) AND his own show, "THE FITCH BANDWAGON", right after Jack's, co-starring Mrs. Harris [Alice Faye], where he often performed numbers like this...
Cool! Thanks for sharing some great information about this song! I think Mr.& Mrs. Harris' show ran from 1948 to 1954, and he did both shows until 1952 when Bob Crosby took over the bandleader spot on Jack Benny's show.
Thanks. It is the same player I used in all of my videos when I first created this account. You can just see it and hear it better in this one. My other one is right next to it with all the records stacked on top. I probably won't record on it that often though. Bob always wants to play when I listen to or record records. He love all the older music.
It is a Arryola Superphonic Cremona. Sorry if it sounds fuzzy on your end. It sounds crystal clear in my living room, and it has good sound on my computer surround sound speakers. I wouldn't even begin to know how to try and sharpen a needle. They're so tiny, I have a hard time just holding them in my big hands. lol They're changed after every record play. :-)

Hey nice player, love the sound and song. I also loved seeing a cameo shot of "Bob" at 0:47 on left side of screen. How is Bob?
