Actually, I don't think Eli dies, Do you notice how the combine advisers tongue goes through Eli's neck? And do you notice how Stalkers have holes in their necks? well if you ask me... the tongue must have a chemical that turns people into stalkers. so in half life episode 3, maybe he will start to turn into a stalker. But of course, you never know.

Valve is keeping quiet about it, but there have been enough comments from their writers that there will be a Half-Life 3. Ep3 needs to come out first though, and it's possible that they will want to release Ep3 and HL3 at the same time.

Honestly, why would anyone actually cry when Eli dies, I mean why play a game full of people with crabs stuck on their head and their chests ripped open, if seeing a character die makes you feel so sad you'd die, sure, I got into the game, but did I cry when a fictional character died, and it was a pretty tame death compared to the headcrab victims? No. Maybe its just me, but thats pretty weird you'd be totally destroyed by his death.

The headcrab victims are completely different. You know Eli more than you know any of them. You create a more personal bond with the character, thus subconsiously wanting them to triumph and survive, the same feeling can be felt with evil characters who you are exposed to in a more negative manner. And if you are more emotional than it could lead you to cry. Ever seen a girl cry while watching a sad movie? It's the same thing really.

I cried a little when I saw it the first time and I cried again. Half-Life has got to be the biggest emotionally attaching game ever made as far as connections with the characters and gordon, the lack of cutscenes, the weird transition from HL1 TO HL2 and somehow we know all the characters when they weren't really in Half-Life 1...... amazing...... I'm gonna play it again.

Yeah man, I hadn't played any Half-Life games but I got Orange Box recently and have been playing through them over this past month or so... I just finished Episode 2 today, it was *SO* sad. =( I wanted to cry lol, and I normally don't care that much about video game characters. Everyone at Steam and all of the voice actors have all come together to do such an amazing work, all of the characters feel so real and human. I'm going to miss Eli, he was like a father to Gordon as well. =(((

Err sorry Valve not Steam... Anyways, I had read up background info on HL1 before I started to get a feel for the world, and I grew so attached to Alyx, Kleiner, and Eli that it was just gut-wrenching to see one of them go like that, very emotional. They become like family to the player and it's such a shock to see something like that and not be able to do anything to stop it. It's especially sad when he's telling Alyx "I love you sweetheart" and "don't look honey" etc. as he's about to die=(

And yeah, you wouldn't think lack of cutscenes would be good but it's pulled off so well in Half-Life. Being in first-person view and in control of your character at all times really makes you feel like you are really there with these people as opposed to just looking in through a TV screen. I can't wait for Episode 3, I just hope they release it as DLC for Xbox 360 (that's what I have Orange Box on and my PC can't run it). Anyways, very sad scene. =(

if eli were to be brought back it would completely defeat the point of the current story arc because alyx's reaction and now her will to get revenge on the combine, as if they she needed another excuse to hate them, would dissolve into nothing and detract from what is set to be an epic retribution in episode 3 - it just wouldn't work. eli is gone, brutally murdered before alyx's eyes, moments after we landed a massive blow to the combine, and now alyx will have her revenge.
