Thanks for getting me straight on this thing about Fred Astaire being gay, but if he had been gay so what, you don't measure the talent or the creativity of a person by their color, their sexual preference or any thing else for that matter. And I just love the way he dances.
So many well known people have been deemed gay, it's no surprise that sooner or later they would question Astaire's sexuality. It's ridiculous, who cares? Does it somehow destroy his talent? Does being gay make JFK a bad president? Astaire a crappy dancer? Absolutely not, and what difference does it make?
he was very much in love with his wife (i forget her name atm) and after she died, he married the woman 35 yrs younger than him. this is based off a biography i read, and he and his first wife were incredibly close. and he was very much in love with his second wife as well.
The cane jumps from the floor because in the floor itself was a pneumatic button. When the cane is out of shot it is perfectly placed on the button. Fred said that a trained musician was given the job of pressing the button at exactly the right time so the cane shot up from the floor and into his hand! What a clip! You can't beat Fred's technical brilliance as a dancer.
Also go ahead and give my comment a "Thumbs down", Fred Astaire was way more talented than Gary Cooper. Cooper was just good looking (To some people) and an overrated actor because of it. If you ask me Astaire was better looking.
"How on earth did he get the cane to fly up off the floor?" At Max: It wasn't one, it was at least three sticks used in this scene. As you notice, every time Fred drops the stick on the floor, it moves out of the picture. Then they quickly replace the stick with one that has a cord. Es war nicht einer, es waren mindestens drei Stöcke in der Szene. Wie man sieht, ist er jedes Mal aus dem Bild, wenn sie ihn mit einem Stock ersetzen, wo eine Schnur dran ist.
