It sucked always having to face the oilers in the first round back in the 80s, what chance did we have? This was as close as we ever came. GO JETS GO!
@jacklayton34 I actually thought the jets had this series after they won this game.Even though the Oilers had won Game 5,I still thought they were toast after going back to the whiteout at Winnipeg Arena 2 nights later.
Congrats on getting Jets back home. When favored team is pushed to a Game 7 in 1st round like this it usually means they have been exposed as fatally flawed and can't win Cup unless there is some legitimate explanation. For Oilers it was probably anxiety of playoff debut for Ranford replacing injured Fuhr in goal. He let 6 goals in Game 1 loss but got stronger as series went on. Oilers offense not showing up for Game 3 after crucial Game 2 win in OT not did help shorten the series either.
I never get tired of watching this. I remember sitting on the basement sofa in Minnesota watching this game...One of the best hockey games I've ever witnessed. Welcome home Jets!!
I was at that game ... it put us up 3 games to 1... then Oilers went three straight. Still, it was my favorite Jets moment. Thank god they are coming home. Sorry Atlanta :)
@NorthEndBlues No doubt that when Don Wittman died,he could have never guessed that his beloved Jets would return to town a little over 3 years later.
I remember watching this game on TV. I also remember watching the Jets last game ever on a Sunday afternoon. It was heartbreaking. Little did I know that I would get to experience that feeling when my Sonics left Seattle in 2008. I hope in the next few days to hear the Jets are returning to Winnipeg! Go Jets Go!
The Edmonton Oilers went on to win every other series 4 games to 0 to win the cup again. The Winnipeg Jets vs Oilers was the best series of that entire playoff season.
This was as close at the Jets came to knocking off the mighty Edmonton Oilers. In fact, if this had been a best-of-five series, they would have knocked off the Oilers right then and there.
But unfortunately, like the five previous times, the Jets ended up being the Oilers' bitches.
Gary Bettman can talk about how well hockey is doing in the south, but let's put it this way. How about Texas, California, Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas put together a college or high school hockey team with all of the best hockey players from the above mentioned states. Then match them up with any Minnesota, North Dakota, New England area, Michigan, or Canadian high school/college teams, and the latter teams would destroy them like the French Army.
Still sends shivers,,I was there and Peg Arena was shaking,,To me this was the loudest I have ever bin in.....sucs that the Oil came back though.....Bring back the Jets to the Peg,,,,,best hockey town.......
Hey look at that...the Jets are in the playoffs....and they have fans! since the 1996 move....they Yotes got corporate boxes, new arena, all the things Bettman loves....but they don't make the playoffs much and don't have fans
kay winnipeg ( my hometown) we are at the point where if not next year forsure the year after we will have a team agian.!! and plus the jets should have never left the peg its only cuz bettman is a mother fucking american shit head and dosnt give a rats ass about real hockey fans we got here in the peg. like fuck seriously just watch all the jets highlights and look at the crowds ans the whole atmosphere its unbelievable. even at moose games we go crazy!!
@homers700 I'm a Flyers fan down here in the US and you're totally right there...Buttman doesn't give a rat's fuck about you guys at all..NONE! I believe you guys go nuts for sure, no reason to doubt it! Hockey should have NEVER left Winnipeg...you're right!
One of my favorite Jet's memories, thanks for posting! For the longest time I'd given up hope they would ever come back, but they'll be back within the next 10 years.
I can certainly see why you wouldn't want to do anything you could to keep THAT team in Winnipeg...
sorry, Winnipeg--all 200 of the Coyotes regular fans are FAR more fiece than you.
If that's because they've had a fun time deporting immigrants before the game or have chugged about seven beers during and now can't stop babbling or else they might puke, that's up for debate...
Go Ducks, my Anaheim Ducks, the GOOD expansion team in the West!
Look how FUCKING LOUD WE WERE! The winnipeg arena was by far the LOUDEST rink in the nhl.
People, this is why we need the Jets back. They should have never left. Our government couldn't get a GOD DAMN arena built, thats the only reason they left!!! WE LOVED AND SUPPORTED THIS TEAM.
This is classic!!! Dave Ellett, Thomas Steen, Dale Hawerchuk, scoring on Messier, Kurri, Ranford & the boys! Who's that in net for Winnipeg? Beauregard?
@LeafsFlamesAndOilers I think so.. i remember Essensa was on the team to and was actually pretty good in his rookie year, but i think it was Beauregard because he was more experienced
Bettman has gone on record more then once stating if there was relocation winnipeg would be the first consideration.....it will happen, sooner then later
I was there with my GF at the time, ended up marrying her...still married btw. We were in the upper deck and when Ellet scored it felt like the whole upper deck bounced about 3 feet. Unbelievable. There is a rumor that Chipman has a (NDA) non disclosure agreement with Nashville. Interesting.
@skt1966 Nashville, Atlanta, Coyotes, Panthers, Lightning, Columbus, Etc... anybody would be welcome in this town. I just hope that the league wakes up and realizes the missed potential in Winnipeg now that we have an NHL Building, Staff, Owner, Managment ready to go! Only a matter of time...
I would love to see Winnipeg get another franchise but like you said the best chance you have is by luring another team to winnipeg. That being said I think Bettman is very happy with the AHL franchise you guys have and doesn't really give you guys two looks otherwise.
Was always an Oiler fan , but at this time kind of wavered into Kings territory because of the Gretzky trade. The Best moment in Jets history , IMO. I think all of Canada ( not Edmonton) had chills after this one , too bad they couldnt close the Oilers out , their fans deserved it. When i watch this highlight i look at the fans faces , and hate that they blow a 3-1 series lead after this game. The fans think they have salted the series away , little did they know.....
I stayed up late in Ottawa for this one. I was thrilled when it happened but it ended in a huge disappointment. If they just won one more game...the Bruins would have won the cup.
Actually, I'm pretty sure had the Jets managed to pull off this series victory; they themselves would have had quite the run for the Cup. Bruins would have been favored however; the power this Jets team had & the sheer adrenalin of putting out the best team in the NHL at the time could have been more than enough. If only.......
I remember watching this, staying up late in NYC to watch my fave team in the west, the Jets. I really thought they were gonna take this series.....shame...
Yes, this was taped just recently. I have two copies of the original game. One with commercials, one without. Quality however seems to flicker when this goal is scored for some reason!! ;-) I guess people like to watch it over and over again stretching the tape on their old VHS Copies! I don't blame them!
I was there that night, I'm very proud to say. When Ellett's shot went in, that was the LOUDEST I ever heard the Winnipeg Arena. Then driving down Portage Ave. with the windows down yellin'.....RANFORD all the way down to the perimeter was just freakin' priceless!!
I was not very old at all back when Winnipeg still had a franchise but to this day I have always loved that Jets logo and name. I really think we should have one or two more teams back in Canada. BRING BACK THE JETS!!!!
Even as a die hard Oiler Fan, I couldn't help but feel the excitement for that Jet goal - hopefully the Coyotes can come back to Winnipeg to relive the magic of the Jets
Well, I was a bit too young to remember exactly what transpired after the game however, looking through the Winnipeg Free Press Archives, Horns were blaring outside the Arena, and through the Streets Of Winnipeg throughout the night! This game was as close to Winnipeg winning the Stanley Cup as we've ever gotten! There will be more chances soon however, Jets 2010
@JHendrix70 The Winnipeg Jets even won Avco Cups in the WHA and they didn't compare to this at all,not to mention having been past the first round twice prior to this.
I don't know until 1 or 2 but the ride home, there was a lot of cheering...screaming...lots of windows rolled down...it was great I was glad to be part of if!
Jets couldve swept the Oilers if they had won game 2 in overtime also...but im an Oiler fan so it was good that they came back besides the Jets wouldnt have gone far in the playoffs
Btw was the old Winnipeg Arena like Quebec City coliseum in the way that from the last few rows of the lower bowl you couldn't see the scoreboard and in the highest seats you could barely see the crowd on the other side?
Bob Essensa was RED HOT that year but our resident genius Bob Murdoch thought it was a great idea to alternate his goaltenders. I guess that's why the Oilers won Stanley Cups and we didn't...
Totally. I never liked him much as a coach BUT: To be fair, Essensa was playing during this game when he was run into by Glenn Anderson ( Who pulled Essensa's helmet off as he was falling on him ) Essensa had to leave which is why we had Berthiaume in goal at the end!
Who would of thought we would of blew this 3-1 lead in the series... Who knows if the Jets just won another game in this series how far they could of gone in the playoffs.
