Unless I'm mistaken, Kristie Phillips, is now part of the U.S. Gymnastics Federation, the last time I saw her was at the Olympic Trials in 2008, (go take a look at the videos and see if you can spot her). She is also a Brevet judge and owns its own facility, KPAC, North Carolina.
Wow so many things are wrong with this video. I like some of the gymnasts of today who are actually allowed to be built and muscular. No wonder so many of them have eating disorders. So tragic.
A real bummer for Kristie; puberty hit in Olympic Year and decimated her Olympic Dream. Very sad, she seems like a really lovely person, from what I have seen of her in interviews and coaching at her gym.
Was it really just puberty? Didn't she also switch gymns and start training less? Every gymnast goes through puberty...so how come Kristie is the only one who has blamed it for not making the Olympic team? If you watch the trials, she steps out of bounds on her last pass on FX, her final routine. That's why she missed the team!
I know; I wonder if Kristie ever used to look at her mum and worry if she was going to have a genetic proclivity towards obesity too???You tend to inherit your parents' body type, so Kristie must have been terrified out of her wits, no wonder she embarked on extreme diets. The thought of turning into her mother must have been very disturbing for the poor girl.
@ralucagymnast - good point....I think if I were a teenager in a sport where body "aesthetics" were so important - & had such an obese mom, I would be terrified, too. And it seems that the Karolyis showed Kristie no mercy in exploiting the situation: they allegedly made comments to Kristie about how she was going to "look like her mother" all the time.
But if you see Kristie today, she still looks in "cheerleading" shape - nothing like her mother.
That is so sad how that turned out for Kristie. Time Daggett at least had his moment in the spotlight and will always be remembered as part of that histoical '84 team. Plus he went on to have great success as a commentator. But Kristie's dedication and fixation on gymnastics was unhealthy, mentally and physically (a diet of tuna fish and eggs, 15 pounds in 3 weeks?!), and that failure to make the Olympic team stayed with her for a long time afterwards.
people like this give baton rouge and the rest of louisiana such a bad name

Continued to gain weight? Kristie really doesn't look like she even has a womanly body, much less a heavy one in that footage of her with Don Peters.

Did Tim make the team? His doctor is cute!

tim went to the 1984 olympics, but was injured and couldn't complete his performance at the 1988 trials.
