The Tyler situation was DID or Dissociative identity disorder (Split Personality) which was probably, in the case of this film, triggered by a lack of sleep but it doesn't actually work like this... Generally a person with DID doesn't see their 'alter' (Tyler) that could be down to psychosis, which is a DID symptom, generally you'll have no idea what the other one is doing... Check out 'Primal Fear' which, interestingly, also has Edward Norton in it... But the sleep..

@indirulz1234 but the sleep... thing, yeah he hasn't 'slept' for 6 months. In the book whenever Ed Norton's character goes to sleep, Tyler wakes up so they're both not sleeping... But yeah in the film's world he hasn't slept at all for 6 months... And after about 3-4 months of not sleeping you will tend to have daylight hallucinations because your brain is just so fried.

@justCHiLLdawg Oh yeah.. There's an illness called Fatal Familial Insomnia where you just won't fall asleep - takes about 18 months to die... But yeah after the first few months you start to experience panic attacks, paranoia and hallucinations - sounds familiar huh?

This blip-appearance of Tyler is a prelude of the scene where we learn that Tyler splices single frames of porn into kids movies. There are actually several of this single frames of Tyler scattered throughout the movie, hinting at, and rainforcing, the single-frame splicing activity :)

@RichardHarlosII the blips are also there to represent Tyler breaking through into his subconcious. You dont see any more blips after he meets Tyler on the plain as he has broken through completley.

There's more than just that....there's one when the doctor has walked out of the office and turns to speak to Jack, one where we see Marla walking away into a smokey alley one at one of the meetings and one on a hotel screen. :)
