I'm not sure if you mean the conductor is working with this orchestra for the first time, or reading the score sheets the first time or maybe both. Lovely venue, and orchestra. Very nice all the way around. It would be nice to be sitting there watching the rehearsal.
What a majestic and dramatic piece. Bravo! Well played! Excellent conducting! Great sound, despite the stray noises made by orchestra members, although I kind of liked the birds chirping during the silences. (The mic picked up everything!) My only wish is that we could see more of the orchestra.
Mussorgsky is one of the greatest musical geniuses ever. He was only at his time, ignoring every form and rule of connection between his themes and modulation logic, but still being able of making exceptionnal harmonies and creating a virtuoso composition and playing. Bravo!
Mussorgsky was about the only Composer I know of that could over dramatize a piece, and make it work. I'm not sure about "quintessentially russian" as I think that still goes more to Rimsky-Korscov with his beautiful capturings of Russian folk lore.
Mussorgsky love the drama, and love to over dramatize his pieces, but his skill let him do that and still end up with such beautiful and powerful compositions.
@Aidtox So what that they wrote music in different musical epokes? I can like Mussorgsky more than Mozart, who I really like, but when I first time heard Mussorgsky I fall in love with his music
This piece is just so beautiful and peaceful. Its weird becuz Im only in sixth grade and I love this orchestra music. I play the cello and I played an easier version of the promenade and the the great gate of kiev
I try posting one more time: Truly a beautiful piece should be used for some great MOVIE, chilling to the bone. Help me by the words, "Reading Mussorgsky's Pictures??" Not familiar with term. OH musians that are truly gifted that have a conductor like this magnificent being, WILL SOUND GREAT FIRST TIME (roalie17) AROUND. :-))))) Thank Dear Jarda for shareing and for the POSTER, without your posting, My dear friend could not have shared this Gem with me, SO THANKS TO YOU Too. :-)
it means that the conductor is reading mussorgkys "pictures at an exhibition" the musical tablature, not actual pictures, for the first time. they simply shortened the full name of the piece. english can be confusing in translation. i hope this helps:)
Thanks so much for explaining. I know how confusing the english language can be many times.I talk myself into trouble all the time with a Beautiful-soul from the UK. He really has a great chuckle because my use of my own Native-tongue. :-) Peace and love for your kindness. <3 U for your sharing knowledge with me. I love learning.:-) I got to also replay this lovely tune. :-)
you're quite welcome, i went off to listen to toccata in d fugue after this, i am on a classical kick lately. enjoy the wonderful arts :) next will probably be swan lake and then green sleeves.
@roalie17 My comment above I should have clicked on to your name, so Read my reply. :-) Peace and Love comes your way. This truly is divine, and played by very gifted musicians. :-)))))
I've loved hearing this music ever since it was played in Princess TuTu. I have to say that this is the best rendition of this peice that I have ever heard! It's beautifully played!
my favorite version is Eugene Ormandy, Philadelphia orchestra on LP. It brings the soul out, especially after smoking a few bowls you can see Russia much closer than Sarah Palin ever imagined. Trust me on this.
this is russian piece, winter piece, forest piece, mental visual ejaculation piece. you must see the moving city as you move past the paintings. up down up down, not down down, up up. Smoke smoke puff puff, you will see the correct pause. The correct city and winter gathering.
Oh man... maybe less big movements and more expression... show some dynamics and make sure ur beat pattern is easty to follow... i know sometimes phrasal conducting is called for... try to balance the baton in ur fingers.... and neverrrr use ur left hand instead of ur right hand to conduct... left hand is for cueing and dynamics... not showing the beat while the right hand does nothing... good job though.... keep up the good work and u will go far... much potential!!!!

What...a horrid conductor. Can I shoot please? Honestly who points their baton at the ground. He's so inconsistent with where the beat is, talk about sloppy. I feel bad for the musicians trying to follow this guy. You aren't meant to be exspressive with the BEAT for god sakes...if you want expression is your other hand to q people in and dictate what you want the dynamics to be. Dont start swinging your baton in weird places so people get confused. It's so unclear.
great. first musical piece i learnt at school. i absolutely hated music lessons especially classic music, but this one always struct a cord with me. thanks for posting.
Extremely impressive! Flawless technique and a great interpretation as well, I particularly liked how the brasses were singing rather than blasting (as most orchestras do) in the opening. The choice of tempo was good too, broad but not overly draggy :)
