  • I saw this show in October. I have been a RENThead for three years, it was the show that got me into Broadway. The show I saw in October was my very first time seeing RENT performed onstage and it was the most amazing night of my life. The cast is so talented, and the show was re-imagined while still being the RENT everyone knows and loves.

All I'm trying to say is don't judge until you see it. It was a life changing experience to finally see this performed live. I couldn't have asked for more.

  • Annaleigh Ashford!! :D

  • Who the hell mixes all the way up to a high C....this crazy chick obviously. Get it girl.

  • what's an off broadway revival?

i thought that it was on broadway anyway? xx

  • @hollypopxox All off-Broadway means is that it isn't in one of the main bigshot theatres close to the main drag. New World Stages is an underground complex with several other productions going on at the same time, so the spaces are naturally rather small in comparison.

  • I'm seeing it SATURDAY!!!!! Two words: Matt Shingledecker. He's AWESOME! Reppin' Charleston :)

  • it seems like there goin for a younger cast but i wonder if any of original members will be in it for a little bit that would b cool

  • Oh Marcus Paul James. <3

  • Rent is about living your life in the moment because you never know what will happen next. Jonathan Larson would have been so proud to see the impact his show (and yes, even this revival!) has had on the world. Stop hating on the new version just because it's not exactly the same as the original. In doing so, you are degrading everything this show embodies.

  • @Platinum400 @oNegLeEk S/he's referring to the fact that it's not the same as the version s/he knows (Sorry, gender isn't obvious by the username and it's not on the channel either).

What she did it MADE IT HER OWN. If you had studied properly then you'd know that not all artists since the exact same versions of songs. They often do their own thing so that it's noticed and they stand out from the crowd. Go do some more studying, you need it!

  • @GillyEJWilliams Yeah some people just want a generic carbon copy but everything becomes dated after a while and must be refreashed in some ways. The message stays the same but the everything else is given a boost of energy which I personally always felt was missing from Rent, with the staging anyway.

  • That top note is f*cking INCREDIBLE.

  • @GillyEJWilliams are you deaf? that wasnt a note it was screeching! it was f*cking AWFUL!

  • @oNegLeEk No, I'm not deaf. I study Musical Theatre at college and that note was perfectly executed. The only reason to may (to you and only you by the looks of it!) sound "screechy" was because that note is EXTREMELY HIGH! The fact that she hit it in head voice is f*cking impressive, but she managed to flawlessly change to a softer and quieter head voice towards the end without any noticable 'gear change'.

I would LOVE to hear you TRY to hit that note in chest voice. I bet you can't.

  • @GillyEJWilliams THANK YOU someone who knows what they're talking about!

  • oh god i just threw up in my mouth they destoryed this song!

  • Its only been 3 years since it was off broadway they could wait a little longer to revive it, btw it takes place in 89-90 when grunge is starting to come in style not some 80's garb. Sorry.

  • For the people hating on this would you be hating if it were to have been revived 20 years from now? They are actors who for the most part all talented... I hate to break it to all of you but it was bound to be revived eventually so let it go!

  • love Matt

  • I saw this 2 days ago, and it was INCREDIBLE

  • @brightsunshine Yes she is

  • Is Annaleigh playing Maureen?!

  • @brightsunshine Yep, bear in mind she's INCREDIBLY different from Idina Menzel (Original). She's more ditzy and much more sexual. I find it incredibly entertaining and hilarious, but she's getting a lot of flak apparently.

  • my very speacil own musicl i did not it was giing to mean so much for me

  • Cynicism is the death of all art. Whether you are a big fan of the original or the revival, or both...it doesn't matter-- What matters is they are telling the story. An important story that needs to be told. Also, there is a wholelot of AMAZING talent in that cast. No need to be a hater behind a keyboard.

  • omg i can't wait im seeing this on the 28th!!

  • My wife and I just saw this show last friday night (8/5/11) and we LOVED it! We saw the Rent farewell tour in Chicago, and now that I have had the chance to see both versions, I promise you will enjoy this modern version. I would agree with @tamarraj, this video does not do the cast justice, they all had great voices! I am already making plans to return to NYC to see this version again...

  • Why are there so many haters? If you love RENT, you'll love this modern, artistic vision of it too...the show evolved and still holds the same message. Get over yourself...love the old and embrace the new too. I know if I am ever blessed to play on the cast in the future, I wouldn't take the hate so kindly. These actors work hard to bless the stage with their craft. They deserve some respect and acceptance. Go RENT!! (Old and New).

  • @malcolmlewis013 sorry wont love this trash HATE IT! they destoryed angel a go go dancing falmboyant gay guy instead of the loveing drag queen maureen a ditiz yeahy right no way in hell will i see this trash hope it bombs cause THEY SUCK!

  • @malcolmlewis013 no they dont deserve recpect because this show "rent" which it's not! is DISRECPECTFUL to the orignal go rent Old! not this thing

  • @oNegLeEk

    -*respect

    -*original

-I suppose everyone is entitled to an opinion...

  • @malcolmlewis013 exactly! I got to see it, and this has brought a new generation of RENTheads. And no matter what, it is still spreading Jonathon's word <3

  • To those hating , look back at the original. When the show opened it wasnt a great production. Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal were very pitchy. There were some great moments vocally, but that was all. The original was only okay. Nice tunes, but lacking balance and blend. It's a show that can't be judged based on vocal performance. It's one who's message is the focal point. It's not about finding the best performers. It's about finding people to tell the story. I feel this cast does that well.

  • @seuss101 then you need to watch orignal again because this piece of TRASH they call "rent" is garbage compared to the true and REAL RENT

  • @oNegLeEk I'm not sure I agree. Rent never was about the wow factor of the numbers. The level of talent in both the singing and what dancing there is was never the point of Rent. It's about the message. If you're watching for the sake of seeing a good performance, then I feel like you have missed the point of the show. With a show like this, it can't be judged based on press footage of a few songs. It's about the ability to tell the story. And THAT is judged in terms of the whole show.

  • @seuss101 well then you are blind i refuse to see rent be forgotten and have this trash put in its place theres no way in hell this trash will last they cant sing defend these rejects while i watch the real rent

  • @oNegLeEk You really can't pass judgement on this production until you see it. The "real Rent" is not defined by a particular production. It's defined by the way it effects people. If the audience walks out with a deeper understanding and a different look at life, then the production has done it's job. Rent is a show that is not seen or heard. It is felt. Remember that. For us who haven't seen this production, we can't determine that. So, I think it's time we stop judging until we watch it

  • @seuss101 i'll pass i'd rather see sarah i can see russia from house palin then these rejects

  • @oNegLeEk You really aren't giving them a chance. And if you are gonna be that ignorant, you really don't have a valid point and I fail to see why anyone should take your side in this case. Do your homework. See what you're bashing before you bash it

  • @seuss101 hahaha i've done my"homework" on this joke of a show its a remix it was done in london a few years ago they're tryingit here and trying to moderize this oh yeah it's agreat show seeing "mark" holding his camera to his crotch during la vie boheme then turning angel into a flamboyant go go dancing gay guy sry yeah thats all i want to know or seethen hearing the soloist screech during seasons of love oh yeah i'll go GAG ME!

  • @oNegLeEk This is really not that "modernized" it's only staged differently and has different costumes. The music and message of Rent is the same. This video makes it seem bad but I've seen it live and it's not a good representation at all. Also the soloist isn't screeching she's doing the note in full voice which takes an extraordinary amount of technique to pull off. It’s fine if you don’t like it but learn what you’re talking about before commenting.

  • @Platinum400 Althought I respect her for being able to go that high in what actually does sound like full voice, or at least in a close to full voice mix, I do not care at all for her performance in this song. I am not a huge Rent fan, the show has never really struck a chord with me, but I have ALWAYS respected Gwen Stewart and her voice. I am almost positive that the note is not correct, and the way she's singing it is without any of the desperation Stewart added. Just is not right for it...

  • @philliesphan804 I'm not sure what you mean about the note not being correct; music is subjective and can be altered, Gwen Improvised the original solo so what she did isn't set in stone. However you're entitled to your opinion and I respect that but I respectfully disagree.

  • @Platinum400 so are you saying that soloist didnt screech that note off key? its bad really really really bad while i agree stewarts was more improvised this one sounded like a cat screeching in pain

  • @oNegLeEk It's your opinion if you think it's sounds bad but your wrong about it being off-key.

  • @Platinum400 whatever you like this piece of crap so of course you're defending the rejects like this shit will ever go on broadway and yes she is off key but i doubt she even knows what off key or off pitch means

  • @oNegLeEk God you write like a seven year old. Please expand your vocabulary to include more than just four letter words. I’m defending it because I’ve seen it live and you’re just talking out of your ass and I'm pretty sure you have no idea what off-key means.

  • @Platinum400 actually do i've studied music theory and no way in hell is a screech a note or a key and good for you for waisting your money on a piece of shit. one postive thing about this that girl who plays mimi she is very good one thing i've noticed though is that when she sings out tonight from what i've seen she seem's to be trying to be both mimi's the broadway and movie. what i mean is on out tonight her voice seems to go differnt keys from broadway to movie do you get what i mean?

  • @oNegLeEk Okay.... So have I and it's not off-key you might not like the sound but it's not off-key. Also I don't know what you mean "Her voice seems to go different keys from broadway to movie," that doesn't make any sense on any level.

  • @Platinum400 have u seen the out tonight clip? watch it to me she keep trying to do a both of both daphne and rosearo her voice is like both of them a bit to me . but whatever you like this crap i hate it, the REAL rent was fine the way it was. tell me something how is still rent if durning la vie boheme mark is holding his camera how is rent if angel isnt a drag queen just a flamboyant go go dancing gay guy how is rent when maureen is now a ditzy blonde actvist? i

  • @Platinum400 have u seen the out tonight clip? watch it to me she keep trying to do a both of both daphne and rosearo her voice is like both of them a bit to me . but whatever you like this crap i hate it, the REAL rent was fine the way it was. tell me something how is still rent if durning la vie boheme mark is holding his camera how is rent if angel isnt a drag queen just a flamboyant go go dancing gay guy how is rent when maureen is now a ditzy blonde actvist? i

  • @oNegLeEk That's the dumbest thing I've ever read. RENT isn't about drag queens, documentaries or activists it's about finding something more in a time filled with turmoil, fear and confusion. RENT is about living life to the fullest no matter what the circumstances are in this short life that we have. The characters are the vehicle for that message but they are a small part of this greater message.

  • @oNegLeEk Um...if you'd studied music theory then you'd know that saying " her voice seems to go differnt keys from broadway to movie do you get what i mean?" is COMPLELTELY misusing those words and show that you have NOT studied music theory...or at least didn't retain anything.

  • @Platinum400 I am aware that she improvised the solo, I'm saying that whatever not she was trying to hit, she missed. Whether she changed it or not, she misses whatever note she was trying to hit. I think she goes a little sharp. That's all I'm saying. I just think they could have found someone better, her improvisation is boring and I think her voice could be much more emotive. All of their voices in this song could be. But I respect your opinion as well.

  • goosebumps

  • I quite liked the female soloist, it took CRAZY skill to do what she did on that top C

  • I happen to love the changes. The reason the show was revived was to bring back the important message. The reason the show closed is because it did not age well once it hit the 10 year mark. I'm thrilled with the new production! If the director of BOTH productions is happy with the changes, why shouldn't I be as well?

  • um why did the second soloist change her words???

  • Comment removed

  • Wow, Rentheads sure are bitter. With this song how can you judge the cast singing? There are two soloists and they were good and the harmonies all sound fine. Whether you like or dislike the "La-oooove" choice, that takes incredible technique to do it the way she did it. Sorry it isn't a carbon copy of the OBC.

  • @TerribleGreenBlizzrd wanna know why there's hate cause the director SUCKS! us bitter rentheads donts want the obc we want the real rent and this isnt even close all it is is TRASH

  • what happened to "love is a gift from up above, share love give love spread love, etc?" that was my favorite part! hopefully they improve in time!

  • How come they changed the lyrics?!?! I don't like it!!!! That part of the song has very important message from Gwen Stewart who is one of the original cast.

  • W.T.F.??? This cast better be recovering from the flu!!! I was on my way to go see this cast soon, but if this is what I can expect then never

mind. If this is truly what the show sounds like now it will be a VERY short off b'way run. Everything about this performance looks like a cheap, high-school version of what was once and incredibly soul-stirring musical.

  • @tamarraj I saw it live and trust me this video is not a good representation of the show because it's amazing.

  • Bland and lackluster. The singing is weak and costuming is laughable. I'm very disappointed with this revival. It's an embarrassment to the original production.

  • Amazing!!! Worth travelling miles and miles for!!! (Live in england :D)

  • I wanna watch the revival! The story never DOES seem to end!
