  • marvelous

  • she is my biggest inspiration and motivation!!!!

  • Sing it Mahalia!!!

  • When it comes to black popular music, everything starts with Mahalia Jackson. This song is amazing, simply amazing.

  • HE shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Amen.psalm;91:4.

  • This song is like her idol Bessie Smith: after listening to the song it sticks to you in your memory.

Mahalia successfully brings the African American slave into the 20th century of hope and possibilities. Mahalia being born in 1911/12? is definitely the midpoint when it comes to timelines in African American history in the music realm.

  • The best version I've heard her sing is on the "Live from Newport" album.

  • Does the record mention who's arrangement this is? Its rather a radical version from the standard that I've heard.

  • Probably Mahalia. I remember reading she would slow songs down (Baptist timing) and/or put them in a minor key to really give feeling to the song.

  • our choir is singing this song...I LOVE IT and i hope the person who gets the solo does it justice!! and maybe that would be me.....haha

  • It's kind of a serious and sad song. Her voice is always beautiful.

  • This solo is different from the 'real' solo part, no matter how, I still love the song... He sang out the eager of the slave 'make heaven my home' cause the slave are tired from the 'old wide world'...

  • Wow :)

  • Praise the Lord Jesus that is a nice song i am on here check out theshrever thank u very much.Amen.

  • What album was this version on? I'm having a very hard time finding it. Thanks!!

  • I tell you her voice just touched my soul so hard i dont even no what to do with myself sept praise the Lord!

  • I heard that song very young, my grandFather had this record ! and it is very good...

  • Does anyone know who made, City called Heaven with these lyrics:

CITY CALLED HEAVEN, CITY CALLED HEAVEN, CITY CALLED HEAVEN FAR AWAY, I GOT TO MAKE IT, HELP ME TO MAKE, TO A CITY CALLED HEAVEN FAR AWAY!

  • yeah but idk the person who sang it

  • A City Called Heaven is a Negro Spiritual. It was "made" and sung by slaves...and then passed down.

  • thank you sis

  • remember to change the needle EVERY time you play a record. and don't play any records that have orthophonic or ve on the label. try not to play any before 1925, cuz you can ruin the disk. just some suggestions.

  • LOVE this! :)

  • Thank you, lovely recording! ...but best not played on that acoustic-era Victor phonograph. VERY hard on that fine, old disk.

  • This song reminds me of the song she sang in "Imitation of Life."

  • Oh my god I love you for posting this...I've been looking for this song by Mahalia.

  • This is really whats up!

  • Thank you for posting this. I was just singing it, and thought I'd see if anyone posted City of Heaven on Youtube. THANKS!

  • I miss her so much. I wish she were still here. Awesome recording. Thank You

  • What a great performance of that song by the Queen! Thanks for posting.

  • thats nice her voice is captivating

  • This is one of my most favorite songs of Mahalia Jackson's. On the piano, I sometimes play along with this recording, as well as the one from the Columbia label!
