its all about repetition and experimenting, you gotta nail the right enemey ships at the right time, like the grouped ones, so u can get the most kills with a single shot, and use bombs as much as possible but on the right stuff, and the route you go through the solar system helps ALOT.

James mcloud died when peppy and him got captured, when peppy barely escaped, he came back to tell fox what happened to his father.

He comes back in the end of the game to save fox, if you try to shoot him, it goes through him, so it could mean that fox is playing mind tricks or iti could be his spirit.

Also right at 1:40 he dissapears out of nowhere without a single trace.

This leads me to believe hes really dead, but hey you never know.
