FYI: -i check my G.shepherd's ears routinely for nasty black'ish Mites, particularly if i see him scratching his ears. The easy CURE is to first take a clean soft/paper-towel and reach into their ears with one's finger as best possible, then simply squirt-in a dose of ordinary Rubbing-alcohol (70% Isopropyl) into both ears while holding the dog's head still so as to not get the alcohol in their eyes when they naturally shake their head. The alcohol readily exterminates eggs and the nasty Mites!

I use Revolution on my cat. It prevents and cures ear mite infections. I just went to go clean her ears last night, and they are really really clean. She lets me brush her teeth, too. Sometime I will have to post a video of me brushing her teeth. lol

I don't know about dogs, but if your cat has this, common symptoms are scratching at the ears and head shaking. There are topical pesticides you can buy to kill these itchy pests. My cat has had them before.

I have to bring my cat to the vet yearly for an ear mite cleaning, even after drops the little buggers dont go away fully. If it;s cleaned the cat is usually fine, but if left unchecked can cause ear infections, deafness, and the cat scratching the ear so bad they make a festering wound from the pain. It can be a serious thing so if your cat or dog gets these bring them to the vet asap!

I feel really bad. My cat has a TERRIBLE case of earmites. The cartlage in his ear is messed up because he had it most of his life(or atleast the day i found him). The thing is, I cannot catch him. He knows when i have the earmite medicine behind my back. I think it just hurts him because he has all of those open sores.

Ugh; no wonder they bother cats so much. My cat got them. It was really hard to get rid of them. Once I'd gotten a handle on it he'd go re-infest himself . Then he'd scratch and shake his head, and I had to use medicine that dried his ears out. All the cleaning, scratching, etc. caused them to bleed. You can actually see them w/ the naked eye: Does anyone know what that dark waxy stuff is? Is it just an overproduction of ear wax, or is it some other substance (mite feces?) mixed in w/ ear wax?

I think it's a little of both. The mites cause irritation in the ear which causes more wax than normal to be secreted and it builds up. Plus all the mite poo has to go somewhere doesn't it? Probably also some dried blood bits mixed in too, as the mites feed on the blood and stuff. Ick, I hate these things! But they look kinda cool close up.

Mites actually DO eat the cat's blood? Now I hate them even MORE! It was gross when I'd clean my cat's ear, spread the gunk on a dark piece of paper and see tons if tiny white things running around.
