  • Your video went viral on Tonga

  • 今なお、この人に勝るスーパーリンペイを見たことが無いです。

    気迫・技のキレ全てが素晴らしいですね!!

  • Excellent performance :)

  • Do not overexert yourself during practice, because your ch'i will rise up, your face and eyes will turn red and you will bring injury to your body. Be careful of this!

It's an excerpt from "The Principles of Karate" by Anko Itosu. (October 1908)

  • @TheWolfjr may be. but not always.

  • Wow! Great kata.

  • this guy looks like those monks from shaolin temple

  • @phoenix220911 yeah.... but it looks so serious... not so peaceful after all xD

  • you know shit got real when in the beginning it sounds like he is screaming "body bag"

  • wow that was beautiful. wow

  • Hell yeah, goju ryu is the only true karate left in the world, we founded (Gogen) the WKF.

  • @MrGetaclueplease That's actually not true. You need to do your reading a little bit before making that bold statement. I am also a Goju practitioner and I completely disagree with you.

In any case, this is a good performance, unlike most performances of this kata I've seen on youtube. Also, this is originally a Goju-Ryu kata. Other styles that have it, such as Shito-Ryu for example, have...borrowed this kata and changed it a bit.

  • i wanna see this in HD!!!

  • i train goju ruy and i think its the best

  • Awesome job on the Kata!!! I was reading the comments and realize opinions are like a-holes,everyone has one. It's not the style it's the person ;)

I practice Seigo Kan Karate do......a branch of Goju Ryu.

  • Very stunning. I may point out tho it didn't look graceful compared to a master like Higaonna Sensei, but very nice in all other aspects. Respect.

  • omg! He's so damn good! grazy..... His moves r so guick, sharp and strong... amazing!

  • I remember watching a discovery/nat geo show on some karate fella training for an American competition. What i dont get is how come they have freestyle catogeries where they can either do a traditional Kata or their own variation.. just confused with that cause the variation ones reminded me more of like B-boying marital arts style. I guess its similar to Wushu competition where u can do your own prepared versions..

  • This is a Wado-ryu kata used by Goju-ryu competitors all you people get your facts straight.

  • @ninjamaniac27 err no.. it IS a Goju-ryu kata.. Many karate style share common katas, though there may be some slight variations. check out wiki for more info on the common katas they have. Like for Sanchin a few style have it, where the breathing may be abit different. So Wado-ryu(not familiar with tt style) could have smt similar since the 1st few generation learnt under only 2-3 instructors then branched out themselves

  • @reydar88 yes It a Naha - Te, Shorei Ryu and now know as Goju Ryu Kata.. Katas are older than the today main 4 styles .. so the nearest style to this Kata is Goju and Wado Ryu is "younger" than Goju Ryu ... and it has his roots in shorin ryu and shotokan karate I just know one version of Suparinpei in Shotokan - ryu and there it is called "Hyakuhachiho" made by Tetsuhiko Asai founder of Asai - Ha

Sorry for my bad Englisch XD

  • @ninjamaniac27 ur a dumb ass this is also a goju-ryu kata

  • @fuKdaKKKSnNIGGAS Yes and no, the way he is performing it, it is Wado-Ryu, there is a variation of this Kata that is used in Goju-Ryu. however there are distinctions.

  • @ninjamaniac27 First i what to say i am sorry for my language. Was juat being a smart ass or at least i tought i knew what i was talking about but aperently i didn't and for that i am sorry. Im guessing you pratice wado-ryu. A very traditional syle i like it : ) how long have you been doing it?

  • @fuKdaKKKSnNIGGAS I actually practice Goju and Wado- Ryu. they are both great styles and I've been doing them for about 5 years.

  • @ninjamaniac27

Are you sure Wado-Ryu even has this kata? I ain't a Wado-Ryu practitioner, but I looked at countless lists and never found it. As far as I know only Shito-Ryu and Goju-Ryu have this kata. I would be surprised to hear that Wado also has it because Wado is based on different principles than Goju...

  • @Tudor1984ify thats correct

  • @fuKdaKKKSnNIGGAS, It is A Goju-Ryu kata.

  • Maurino & Valdesi & Figuccio

  • This guy is amazing! :D

  • i wouldve given u 1st place if i was one of the judges

  • He is good. Really good. Uses the essence of the Goju style, flowing with strength

  • circus act kata ! its crap !

  • Had not noticed until now that Abe performs the Crescent Kick behind instead of the front as it has been the technique from old.

  • That was something else....wow. A bit different from the way I learned it, but I like it a lot. Osu!

  • Comment removed

  • which version of which style of gankaku?

  • LOL

he sound like renji of bleach O.O

  • Yipes! He is very very good!

  • Im shito-ryu and i can do that kata ;) Shito-ryu RULEZZZ

  • @MiguelJD1995

ever heard of a guy called super foot?

  • i hate seeing kata ruined like this. competition kata has only managed to destroy the art of the combination's asthey should involve power where necessary and technique, you should be able to take it and use it in a real situation with minimal changes. competition kata is all about doing it as fast as you can and making it as flashy as possible, while ruining the whole concept of kata, and just slowly destroying the history of kata by changing them for the worse for competition purposes.

  • @rinuchi I might agree with you, though I'm not sure. If you're right, then it would be a real shame. Personally, I'm not into tournament kata or even tournament kumite. I practice karate for my own development. Then again, I wonder if both incarnations of kata could co-exist without negating one or the other. I dunno, I'll have to think about it some more. OSU.

  • the 3rd punch of this kata is so fast i can barely see it. his power control and grace are beyond anything ive seen. notice that when he does the spinning crescent, he does a 540 turn, not a 360. never seen that before. after a few tries, i got it, but its tough. kudos brother. youve inspired me!

  • stunning.

  • man hes great.. solid power

  • his kiais are like the chirps of a sparrow.

  • so great, Goju Ryu is the best

  • @rabbitpessy Goju Ryu is the best!!! lol :)

  • @rabbitpessy it depends on the person

  • @rabbitpessy best for what gymnastic?

  • I faved this cos its good !

  • very good

  • TIGHT & RIGHT

  • AWESOME

  • Cool video. I'm still struggling with Gekki Sai Dai Ichi, but a man can dream :)

  • more troll comments. What style do you practice? Post YOUR katas

  • awesome!

  • Excelente!!! Saludos desde argentina IOGKF

  • This one is actually better than Milon's Unsu.

  • Again, I am not dissing this, the guy obviously has wonderful control over his movements; I just said I don´t understand this kata. If there is youtube video that explains the bunkai for this, pls share.

  • @Derukugi2 i dont understand some of it but from what i can help ya on is look at some shotokan applications on unso with the circular movements, ueichi ryu for the passing of hands, and chinto/ chinte in shotokan for some of the double punching....thats howi am looking at it

  • this makes me proud to study karate, and goju ryu in particular.

beautiful, inspires to push for my black belt

  • Esta si no son mamadas (sorry por el lenguaje, pero mis respetos para este señor)

  • who's this guy , the KATA WAS GREAT AND SUPERB

  • thts not shito version...pure goju ryu..oss sensei abe!

  • thts not shito version...its pure goju version...well done kata

  • oss ~

  • thats supposed to be the kata im competeing with....after seeing this...i hope I can do it justice.....

  • oss !

  • I'm Goju Ryu and even if that was a Shito Ryu version, it's still was shito good!

  • While suparinpei is certainly known as a "goju ryu kata", Abe Ryoku is seen here performing the Shito Ryu version.

  • Will you point out the differences, please?

  • Sir, while the differences in timing and rythym between the two schools are numerous, primarily the placement of the hands in mawashi uke (executed 8 times) is different, and also in the empi uchi-uraken uchi-shotei sequence, the shotei in goju ryu is done as an immediate part of that sequence, at full speed and with full hikite on the right hand.

  • Yes: I see what you mean. Thank you for the explanation.

  • Damn he's good!

  • wedew,,,

    its so owesome...!!!

  • Preciosa forma de expresar kata.

  • wow... it seems so... so exact... nearly perfekt kata...

  • Very high level skills !

  • holy shit...

    that was GOOD

and i don't even know what the hell it was, lol

  • Wow! I really enjoyed it. Very nice.

  • Im a kyokushin practitioner (yes we all know kyokushin is pathetic at kata) but I was really impressed by this.

  • Hey, every style has strengths and weaknesses. You kyokushin guys are some hard muthas in kumite, give you props.

  • best suparimpei ever seen

  • does any one know what is the name of that sensei who is in this movie??his great!!!

  • R. ABE

  • excelente

  • very nice !!!!!

  • this is a really good Kata

  • Does any one know why he is bald in this video and has hair in others? Just curious. Maybe he has been ill?

  • Or maybe he's a human being and sometimes decides to change hairstyle? ;)

But of course, it could have been from illness, but I think he just changed his haircut.

  • Gives him that Yul Brenner kind of a look. He was scary enough before.

  • A few years ago after this competition he came to a seminar that my sensei, Fumio Demura, was teaching and he had a full head of hair so I asked him about his lack of hair in the video and he just smiled and nodded.

  • NAAUM EH ATOOA QUUE GAANHO DO VALDESI

  • he is pretty good

  • sharp

  • What is this guy's name?

  • Abe Ryouki

  • sorry, heikudachi, not heisokudachi.

  • Can anyone tell me why Heisoku dachi in Sensei Morio Higaonna's version is replaced by Sanchin dachi in Abe's version, although both are from Goju-ryu???? Thanks

  • Sick kata. It starts off boring but it just keeps getting better. Yet this guy makes the whole thing interesting.

  • I love this kata!!

    I have to learn it...

    a very good video

  • Does anyone know how hard Suparinpei is? I'm a Shotokan karate-ka, but I'm learning this for sun. I know a number of kata outside shotokan, but I'm interested in Goju Ryu. Does anyone have any advice for someone wanting to learn this kata, such as other kata to learn before hand.

  • learn the gekisai dai ich and ne and saifa that covers most of the basic movemnts but you also have to learn the correct breathing.

So I'd suggest you train with some of the goju ryu guys. Hope that helps.

  • To answer your first question: quite hard. It's the hightes level Goju Ryu Kata, but if you really want to learn it, all you need to do is practice. Go for it!

  • Sensei Morio Higaonna has some DVDs that I believe cover the kata. I'm also a Shotokan karateka and plan to learn it in the future at some point. Beautiful kata.

  • @ShotokanKarate85 other katas to learn that are similar in beauty are seipei, seiunchin, kururunfa and nipi po. i started tkd and went to shoto, but learned every kata i could regardless of style. they are the songs of the martial arts, while kumite is like free jazz.

  • @666PANTYHOSE IMO, Gankaku is the most beautiful kata in karate, however I love seienchin, wankan, and the tekki series very much.

  • holy shit he is fast!

    amazing technique, very inspring!

  • amazing, the dicispline reqiured is awesome, i wish one day i could be half as skilled. 2 year traditional goju ryu student.

  • be for a comp they would do a kata 150 to 200times a day if you have the heart you or any one can look just as good with good training

  • So, elements of Goju breathing kata, Sason, a bit of Chinto, maybe some Gojushiho, one of the Paisai. Nothing here to learn that isn't in all the "basic" kata taught on Okinawa.

For anyone worried about this kate my advice ( after 40 years of practice ) is just pratice your 'basics" and you will be just fine.

  • I'm a Shotokan stylist. I am in the process of learning this particular kata. My sensei teaches the traditional Shotokan katas, as well as some weapons and other katas from other styles. I'm finding Suparinpei challenging to "get under." It feels very awkward and I can't seem to find a rhythm to it. It's interesting to see it performed by martial artists who have found their formula for it. Thanks for posting the video.

  • Muito bom, parabéns pelo belo Kata!

Sou Faixa preta 3º Dan de Karate Goju-Ryu

  • Not useful? Obviously you have Never practice Bunkai, therefore never translated Kata moves to fighting. Shihan Frank Puello, NY

  • "Kumite through kata" as Soke Yoshimi Inoue said during training camp with him!

  • beautiful kata..

meaneyedcats - suparunpei is okinawan of fuzow; so pak ling pak, in chinese; yi baai lirng ba [shu].. jap = ichi hyaku rei hachi [te], for; 1,100, 0, 8 = 108 [hands]..

many meanings; 108 hands wooden dummy form [kata], 108 shaolin manoeuvers, 108 acupuncture points suitable for striking..

  • Charisme, stabilité, puissance, c'est vraiment excellent! Posé sans rester 2h sur chaque position.

Y a pas dire les japonais ont toujours ce petit truc en plus que nous n'aurons peut-etre jamais nous occidentaux

  • Wow, he's fantastic. Such stability and I love the way he goes from neko-ashi-dachi to chickodachi, it's so smooth.

  • beautiful

  • I'm going to be honest; I have no idea how this kata is supposed to look. That, however, was tres impressive.

I'm in Shotokan myself, but I have to admit, I like watching that one just as much as Unsu. I love that neko-ashi-dachi.

Also, I like the gojo-ryu one far more than shito-ryu's version.

  • Sweet.

  • Very good performed. I'm Shito Ryu, so it looked a bit different, but basics the same!

    Really cool kata :)

  • dosen't this kata have 180 moves?

  • I believe that "Suparinpei" translates literally to '108', (not 180) which supposedly has significance in traditional Japanese culture.

Not being Japanese, however, I can't say this with any authority.

  • Very Nice Form!

  • I was in the transcendental meditation prior to reading these comments. Pikachu came to in a dream and recited Holy Haikus never recited before. Suddenly! I woke up and I found myself in the presence of the Holy Dali Lama and the Holy Pope. They were thinking thoughts never previously thought before. It was the greatest riddle since the creation of Kata. Vituperation, fornication and procrastination are the true way. Long live the "Eta Hinin No Michi!

  • Comment removed

  • that's right, i saw a video about his...erhhm..."martial art", you practice goju ryu, what do you think about him?

  • i would like to have a comment about "american goju" by you

  • What do you mean by "American Goju"? Urban and his group?

  • anyway... i am starting to like that kata!

  • good, now watch unsu kata Shotokan performed by milon, goju ryu has no match for shotokan

  • Different styles of karate can have different bunkai for the same set of kata, I think. Anyway, relatively smooth execution with minimal body tension. Actually, it's really scarier to hear the "whoosh" in most of his punches and kicks than his yelling.

  • I have trained in goju for 35 years. This is probably the best Suparinpei I have ever seen.

  • Well the purpose of kata was technique, power bunkai n stamina. They didn't have jogging tracks in Oki, so would do kata many times a day instead. Certainly not for show, as here, but still, good kata.

  • I don't think the masters who invented this kata had "tournament" on their minds, so neatness, concise ness and embusan were not priority over power and technique. But WKF judges look for neatness and conciseness, not power and speed. If you wanna win at WKF change the kata.

  • Even Morio Higaonna is untidy but extremely powerful! Milon was a victim of steroids wasn't he?

  • Can someone tell me why his stance is a right sanchin dachis after the cresent kick and turning? That's a big difference from others(A. Wakai, Mudial, etc)

Anyway, five stars performance no doubt!! He lost to Milon? Too bad there's only one first place in the championship.

  • really good kata and power

  • Sorry, Abe's suparimpei is good but its not the be-all-end-all of the kata. I still think Morio Higaonna Sensei's Suparimpei is the best I've seen, but I guess its not fair to compare Abe with Higaonna Sensei, is it?

  • esta muy bien hecho yo tambien estoy tratando de aprendermelo pero me cuesta q jode o sea mucho

  • Espectacular!!! Muy buena la ejecucion del kata Suparinpei

  • beautiful!

  • already found it, R. abe

  • What's his name?

  • I love the Tendou Karate Kata of Gojo Ryu, Shotokan, Wadado Ryu, Shito Ryu, Wado Ryu, and any Okinawan Karate style. I also love the Jissen Kumite of Kyoukushinakan, Seidokaikan, Byakurenkaikan, Ken Budo Karate, Ashiharakaikan, Shidokan, Yoshukai to name a few. I trained in Japan and the Jissen Karate styles are the most popular karate styles in Japan.

  • absolutlely brilliant from an iogkf practitioner

  • daaamm!!! hes fast 5 stars

  • MMIlon, your comment is ridiculous! Do you truly believe that the slow moves done ain kata are the way the style fights??? Come to think of it, most kyokushinkai and thai boxing, boxing etc are in higher stances, which give more mobility. Shotokan was to develop spirit in the youth of Japan, founded by a school teacher, not a fighter. There are slow moves in Shotokan too. Shotokan is definitely NOT more difficult, in fact it's a much more simplistic system.

  • puts all that wkf robot dancing to shame . great stuff

  • i agree fuck tha wkf rules im more in traditional rules

  • amazingamazingamazingamazing

    this guy is insane..

  • shotokan is a great style, but if you know your history, and i mean really know it,, you will know that it is a stripped style, most of the true combat moves have been changed or stripped from ther katas, goju is alot more true to its roots, and i have also trained both styles,, both have ther good points

  • To mmilon your critiques on goju are not valid and can't be backed up. One BUDO is not about being harder to master or more spectacular, its about making it home at the end of the day. Second, all goju positions are not high, but why emphasize unatural body positions in a real fight? The rythm is not slow and it blends hard and soft techniques, which have both speed and power an emphasize uchimi used in grappling something shotokan does not. I know this because I practiced it.

  • Responding to derukugi, goju like all karate was adapted from chinese martial arts specifically goju comes from fukien white crane.

  • Wow, probably th best performance of any kata I have ever seen!

  • that was amazing, wow goju-ryu is amazing....

  • Milon was the only champion !!! Abe is zero compared to Milon !!!

  • hey fucker try to compete with real Traditional karateka with Traditional rule? guess who win? u know im really piss about wkf b.s. thing

  • Do you have any intelligent words in your vocabulary other than the F-bomb and other derogatory verbiage. I am not a fan of the WKF format because it creates kata clones. Everybody's kata is posed and the rhythm of the kata removed. But I try to comment in a respectful manner.

  • well im kind alil bit piss off but im coolin it off better so yea my bad

  • Former WKF kata champ Sakumoto exhibits beautiful rhythm but nowadays the exponents (including Sakumoto's students)prefer long posing which I think too long.

  • Maybe if you gave us your real name then I could check it against the register's of all the last karate championships (not your BS, let me put on a tournament beside the 7-11 and call it 'traditional' cause my made up style of karate has no relevance" tournament). Otherwise, talk is cheap.

  • Beautiful execution of this kata.Focus,strength,speed. Good balance in all aspekts.Just love Goju Ryu Karate.Straigt foward, true, simple but effective. Not that fancy new age extreme martial arts i keep seeing on tv.Sure its spectacular to perform a double backward loop kick(which i sometimes do to impress the little kids)Or perfom open katas in a rush and rage as if ur ass is on fire. All this is a GREAT show. But nothing to do with martial arts... Go Goju!!!

  • Shotokan is much more difficult, spectacular and effective. In Goju Ryu the positions are very high, the rythm is slow and there are only few fast techniques. In shotokan you have speed, power, kime, lower and more difficult positions.

  • MMilon

I did Shotokan for 12 years. Saying that it is more "difficult" is not a good thing. Quite the opposite. Your techniques must me efficient, not difficult. I now do Goju. It took a good year to erase Shotokan and incorporate Goju. Goju is a much more complete art. To put things in perspective: In a cramped and dark alley I would rather use Goju short and to-the-point techniques than a "spectacular" Shotokan one.

  • yeah shotokan has the sharp, powerful kinda moves, the "go"(hard) aspect, but it doesn't have the smootheness of goju, the "ju" (soft) aspect.

  • I don`t "get" Goju katas, sorry...

They look so Tai Chi like

  • If you knew the Bunkai you would get them, remember, it's a combat in which you can't see the opponent but the Bunkai is the explanation for every single move and its use

  • Well, then where can I see the Bunkai for these?

I wasn`t making a judgement, just saying what I see.

  • Look into Hanshi Patrick McCarthy. He has an incredible insight into bunkai from many different karate styles. Traditional "toudi", or simply "te," uses kata to codify and teach bunkai. Toudi (also pronounce kara-te) can be translated as "China-hand" (original ideograms) explaining the similarity that you noticed to Tai-Chi
