The only thing that makes that movie sadder is that it's based on a true story. In real life the brother went on to write the novel that the movie's based on as a sort of apology letter to his sister because he blamed himself and his stupid, childish pride for her death.
@ANKIT007RAJ Why does every film have to have a happy ending. The only difference between the film and the book/true story is that the Brother survived as he went on to write the book as a way of saying sorry to his dead sister
This is an amazing movie, but its so sad... I'm always crying when I watch it. It makes me feel ashamed to be an American... I remember when I first saw this movie. My dad had bought it for my sister and I. I started watching it and it broke my heart. I was only about 6-7 years old. Everytime I see Seita, I think of my older brother, and when I see Setsuko, I think of me. I love him with all my heart and I hope nothing ever happens to him... Just typing this made me cry a little... :'(
still haven't been able to bring myself to watch this again in over 5 years!!! i really want to though.. but i just don't know when i want to be damn depressed for 2 weeks.
this movie is so sad and kind of depressing. i've seen it a few months ago and i think it will take a long time before i can watch it again; even though it is a beautiful movie.
The first time I watched this movie, when i heard the opening song, i teared...idk y, it just seemed sad-the scene with the fireflies, then the second time i watched it i cried even harder, lol.
most important scene of this, beyond the death of Setsuko, is when they first -and last- have to throw away the fireflies they used to light the camp up.
how faddish and short-lived little things really are when you can't take good care of em... basically the biggest hint to the end of the movie. probably the most human anime i've ever seen, but not the best.
This is 1st ever anime DVD I bought 7 years ago. I just attracted to the picture on the back of the DVD cover, someone walking in a rain with an old umbrella. I was expecting an animation with a beautiful background. But listening to the intro song suddenly make me cry, whats wrong with me?!! Then, woahhhh! I cried till the end of this film! I never watch anything sad like this one! I made subtitle in my own language and show it to my little sister. Beautifully narrated film! Its a masterpiece!
A movie that is impossible to forget. Not because you can watch it over and over, but because you can't. The impact made from this movie is nearly indescribable. It's quite possibly one of the most powerful movies I have ever seen.
Grave of the fireflies is by far the most emotional and heart touching anime ever made. This movie gave me aftershocks for more than a week and Setsuko's voice is now in my head forever. No one and I mean it no one can scrape her voice outta my head.
We always seem to think that all the Japanese were horrible, selfish people that would fight for the wrongest things. In truth, all the Japanese wanted was a chance to be actually considered as a world power like Germany wanted to. Although how the army actually got that power is wrong, how is it any different than what we Americans did with the Native Americans or what we did with the atomic bombs and the attacks?I can't believe what people say about the Japanese, or how they were evil people=(
This film reminds me of the relationship between me and my little sister; I'm here big brother and I will do anything to protect her...even if I can't protect myself!!
Why the fuck do I have this on my favorites! I keep going back to it and then get depressed for half the day! It really is a very emotional movie though. The only one to have ever made me tear up.
We humans are strange. I watched the horror unfolding in Japan in shocked silence untill I heard the voice of a little girl that instantly reminded me of this film and the tears have barely stopped since.
I didn't sob to this movie, but I shed a few tears =( I can't believe the most innocent of characters (Setsuko) is the first to go. Not fair at all. I guess Ignorance isn't bliss.....
The movie has definatly touched me, Infact mabye when I grow up, I could adopt a child from a war zone and free them <3
@MarxNightmare sorry, i disagree... i recommend you watch five centimeters per second, voices of a distant star, and place promised in our early days. extremely sad movies. but i see your point, i'm just saying...
this was a very fuck up movie. i never wish on any child. but the funny thing about this movie. it still happening in real life. and it just as bad from what the movie shows. no matter how many time you see this you cant help to shed a tear

this movie was my assignment when i'm at university...i couldn't finish the assignment because i was crying everytime i watch this movie.....thumbs up to Japanese movies....greetings from Malaysia
This movie isn't only about war, it's also about human selfishness, indifference.
Nobody shows any compassion to those kids that are castaway. The most painful thing about it is the contrast with Setsuko, so nice, so lifeful, she's the sunshine of this movie (or shall i say the firefly ?) yet she's the one to die. And nobody gives a damn ****, like this guy " what a nice weather we are having today", b*stard !
This story is based on a novel based on the real story.
same here, I was so sad when it ended that I just wanted to see her joyful and lifeful again. But I shed manly tears when she's stand and the fireflies start flying around.
@prycejerkz916 It's been a while since I saw it now but it really has to be one of the (if not outright 'the') saddest movies ever made. I don't know how many care about movie criticism but I believe it has been compared to Schindler's List, a worthy comparison if you ask me. It's severely underrated, for sure; strangely actually since it's such a magical movie yet sad also. This is the type of movie I probably won't watch many times because of its impact, and it's almost impossible to forget.
Ok usually I'm one to overreact about saying "OMG THIS IS THE BEST MOVIE EVER!!!" but this time I think It truly is the greatest film I have ever seen. (And even seen a lot of good ones) But this film would still be great but I think the music help take it from being a great film to a PERFECT film. Without a doubt this along with the ending theme has got to be in my top 20 if not top 10 favorite songs of all time and Grave of the fireflies being my favorite movie.
yup this song is really sad , my mother came from that time period, where her little sister did because of malnutrition, real story and what makes cry is that the little girl looks like my niece same haircut when she was young
I cried the first time I saw this film and get very tearful whenever I watch it now. This film definitely hits a sensitive spot! Studio Ghibly has made, yet again, another moving film! Cant express enough how moving this film is! (Almost too sad :P )
This movie is really sad :( I cried as well. I think the saddest part of the movie just about sums the theme up, when she says "She never woke up" If I'm not crying by then, well that part makes me bawl my eyes out.
This was such a great movie !! I was so moved by this film !! I cried my eyes out like a baby through this movie :( I stopped watching this movie for a long time because of how sad it was and how much I cried, omg i'm actually crying right now :( !! I can't even watch this whole clip without crying :( !! it's a really great movie !!
only studio ghibli is capable of capturing this cruel, depressing war and convert it to a cinematic event blessed with beautiful images, extraordinary sadness, wonderful characters, and honest portrayment of the unexplicably depressing fire bombings of japan. 10000000/10. fucking brilliant.
oh man this makes me feel worse about the Iraq war. most of us are againts it abd yet it still goes. there must be so many children suffering. my bro and i are really close like these siblings. it would brak my heart to see my baby bro die like that.
this is the saddest movie ive ever seen in my life.this movie is NO JOKE!Cried my eyes out. That little girl took care of him kind of like a mom like when she cleaned.1 of the things that made me cry was when she ate the marbles & thought they were candy. It breaks my heart knowing somewhere this is happening NOW.I was depressed for 2 days & my mom didnt know way.I just couldnt tell her.I couldnt say it.Im so scared 2 watch this movie again. Its so good I want to c it again but I just cant do it.
It was more so the little things that stuck with me, like when he has to sell his mother's clothes, and he yells at the doctor, and when he has the memory on the beach, and teaching his sister little things - trying to be an adult/strong for her :(
I love flims like "Hotaru No Haka". Unlike the films made by peole such as Quentin Taranotino, it shows what war is truly like. Is its that war is not heroic, its soecities failure to protect its innocent
@Rikku2250 Tarantino is a hack. I'm sorry, but all of his films are just grind house flicks that pay homage to older films(and use old cinemotography filming techniques). They have little plot and are just psychotic fantasies from Tarantino's own mind (yet he speaks of himself as some sort of deep artists because he calls something "Inglourious Basterds" instead of "Inglorious Bastards".
Sorry for the rant, but you're right... there is no glory in war, only death and sorrow.
What fo you mean by "Tarantino is a hack"? Also i could not really amke out if you are praising or critisizing him. Could you ecplain a bit better please? Thanx
Yes, thats why i hate the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. I don't give a fuck about the British and American troops. Instead i worry for the innocent pepole they are killing and attacking.
@Rikku2250 I won't comment on Iraq or Afghanistan (I would suggest looking into an issue rather than just repeating what others say). I don't suppport Russia's brutal war in Chechnya but I would never wish harm on Russian forces or civilians.
I was criticizing him and simply giving my two cents on why his films are so popular and why I'm not a big fan of his work. I will regress and say that he's not terrible, but his films just don't achieve anything.
This song is so strong and incredible. It makes me want to cry till I don't have any more tears left to cry out. When I watched the movie, I really tried to hold in my tears as much as I could, but the scene with the ghost-like Setsuko running around and playing did it for me. Right then and there I started crying so much. It really is one of the greatest and saddest films I've ever seen.
Why did they choose such a soft, mellow, soothing, sad and wonderful melody for an opening theme to a war-film? It is pure emotional terror I tell you. :(
@Quakeulf Think its like to balance it all out maybe? or to show you moments that they were really happy and stuff, kinda makes the sadness all the more sad i feel. Contrasts are wonderful.
God I love this film, I never cry watching films but I just couldn't stop myself with this. But I still watch it, even though I know tears will always make their way, it's just such an amazing anime, wish more people knew about it.
As sad as the truth is, there is now way to avoid war. It may not be the "awnser" but it has solved so many conflicts. You said "war" isnt the awnser but the better thing to say is that all round violence isnt the awnser but in saying that, how could've ww2 been solved? By talking, i think not. Yes it is perfeclty true that war is wrong. But sadly, as much as it is a horrific thing. There really isnt more options other than violence. Its the sad truth of the human race we are scum.
Ever since I watched this movie I hated war and their outcome to people like Seita and Setsuko. It's just sad that there is so much fighting going on in the world and those people don't bother about thinking twice about what would happen to people around them
@FlyingDepth its not funny even to joke about it. Terrorists are scum.. but even them.. if only they had happened to be born somewhere else they wouldnt have become so
This movie was wonderful...it was very moving and, even though the plot was so simple; just following these two children, it's mind-numbing in it's sadness...
@BeakyRed for so long, this was the only move almost to make me cry. If nobody was just around me, I flooded myself with tears. I felt my throat harden, and inside me, I was so..... so..... huhuhaahuhuhu.....
Personally, I felt the brother in this film symbolized the fallacious Japanese government during the war, refusing to back down despite causing incalculable suffering to the innocents. Too arrogant to think of defeat, and in turn, ruining the lives of countless Japanese/Chinese/Philippines/etc.. civilians.
Very wise of the film to stay away from ideologies and focus on real, human suffering. Hence, it becomes just as applicable to Japan as it is to Japan's wartime enemies.
The movie itself had bad pacing, sub-par dialogue and voice acting (dub version), a tired and cliche message, very little originality.....but it;s...it's just......oh god....*breaks into tears*
it's so sad and strikes home such a powerful message that it still qualifies as a must see. And not just for kids, for everyone.
Setsuko's cremation is probably one of the most powerful scenes of any movie ever.
this was seriously the saddest, but one of the best, animated movies i've ever seen. it was so...depressing but it was so...good... i'm lost for words about it
I don't know what you're all blabbing about, I just want to say that this was the most moving movie I have ever seen. Just the fact that this theme sounds so peaceful brings out all the emotions again.
The director really potray the real life of human being where suffering will never ends during war torn country-Bravo! Salute frm my bottom of my heart!
I wonder how many Setsukos and Seita are there right in places such as Afghanistan and Iraq...I am sure there are. I pray for God to give them the strength to keep their chins above the water whatever the circumstances. :)
i was crying my eyes out when i saw this movie. it's just so touching. i have seen a ton of WWII movies in my life, but this one is probably the one that's touched my heart the most.
The only thing that makes that movie sadder is that it's based on a true story. In real life the brother went on to write the novel that the movie's based on as a sort of apology letter to his sister because he blamed himself and his stupid, childish pride for her death.

It was more so the little things that stuck with me, like when he has to sell his mother's clothes, and he yells at the doctor, and when he has the memory on the beach, and teaching his sister little things - trying to be an adult/strong for her :(

I have never. ever. cried THAT hard from a movie in my entire life. I was depressed for days after watching this :P

I love flims like "Hotaru No Haka". Unlike the films made by peole such as Quentin Taranotino, it shows what war is truly like. Is its that war is not heroic, its soecities failure to protect its innocent
Rikku2250 1 year ago
@Rikku2250 Tarantino is a hack. I'm sorry, but all of his films are just grind house flicks that pay homage to older films(and use old cinemotography filming techniques). They have little plot and are just psychotic fantasies from Tarantino's own mind (yet he speaks of himself as some sort of deep artists because he calls something "Inglourious Basterds" instead of "Inglorious Bastards".
Sorry for the rant, but you're right... there is no glory in war, only death and sorrow.
heero171 1 year ago
@heero171
Rikku2250 1 year ago

Quakeulf 1 year ago
@Quakeulf Think its like to balance it all out maybe? or to show you moments that they were really happy and stuff, kinda makes the sadness all the more sad i feel. Contrasts are wonderful.
tripoticsoundscapes 1 year ago
@Quakeulf
Think it was to represent innocence. It also has a sense of longing to it, as well as being sad without being bitter.

BrackenClelk 1 year ago
The movie itself had bad pacing, sub-par dialogue and voice acting (dub version), a tired and cliche message, very little originality.....but it;s...it's just......oh god....*breaks into tears*
it's so sad and strikes home such a powerful message that it still qualifies as a must see. And not just for kids, for everyone.
Setsuko's cremation is probably one of the most powerful scenes of any movie ever.
