I own both so perhaps I am the best source 12tanj. I use both on track days and the Merc is quicker, On the road it gets far more attention from other drivers. practical use, the Merc is cheaper too (serving costs). based on the people I meet around the UK (done 24K miles in both), irrespective of what "We" think . .the general public loves the Merc. .looks and sounds fantastic, rare (only 19 in UK) about 40 comments to 1 attracts attention. So, the Merc is a far "better" car. :o)

And you can't even say that this car wasn't out 3 months ago when you made your post, because the 458 Italia has been introduced in september 2009. The 6.2l V8 AMG engine is based on Chrysler's SRT8 6.1l V8 engine. It's just been tuned up by AMG. Mercedes can't even make proper engines. No wonder BMW's engines have been winning most of the engine awards, even when the winning engines are 3 years old!!!

If its like that then go buy a CTS-V it handles just as better than an M5 and way cheaper.
