[:))] If I had one wish... I'd wish that you would come back to Colorado to do a show, it would be a dream come true too hear you, and see you live in concert... Love always, Gwendolen[♥]
My girlfriend and I were on a road trip and I was playing my Phil Collins CD. This was the first time she ever heard of Phil Collins except for Tarzan. I explained to her what I know about him and Genesis. We listened to the whole CD, she went back to her dorm room, stayed up all night looking up Phil Collins and Genesis on Youtube.
I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford.
You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment.
The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist.
@tehprojektzero Please relisten to Wind and Wuthering and Trick of the Tail. I love the Peter Gabriel work, but if you do not like the artsy element, start listening where Phil took over vocals, I think you will grow to love it. :)
in a world now of glam chicks and gay dicks Phil stands out above them all.this kind of music will never be written again. these are sounds of an age gone past. how i long for the 80's and 90's again. great times indeed. i have lived too long i fear.
80s had a ton of absolute shit music. So did the 90s. So do we now. So did the 70s. Stop acting like there is some magical era that defines the best music, I enjoy music based on what I hear, and I've heard a lot of good music from everywhere in the last 40 years.
@MrGearjammer63 What Kain is saying is that there is no era that defines great music; it's the musicians themselves that define what is or isn't good music. Just because a great artist happened to be active during a certain period doesn't automatically make the rest of the artist great by association. And even then, music is about opinion. There's no such thing as "good music" or "perfect music," since there's always at least one person who likes or doesn't like the song.
@NathanNColtingway both of you guys are right and both of ya'll just made me realize. Most of my favorite songs are from the 80's and 90's but somebody introduced a new sound good enough for me to enjoy last year. I am currently waiting on what will come up this year.
I was in a band inspired by Aerosmith, Nickelback, and Guns N Roses, this was back in highschool and the founder of the band and I graduated and teh band broke up. Since then, I went solo, learned how to play guitar, and rewrote a song that my fellow band members and I wrote and performed it at a talent show. The new notes and chords were inspired by one of Phil Collins's greatest hits "Something Happened on My Way To Heaven," and the audience loved it. Too bad I didn't win though
I love this song. This sounds like my heart is fellin' 4 the past months. It's funny how I can help other people with their relationship problems, but I can't seem 2 fix my own.-.-
"In Too Deep" is the most moving pop song of the 1980s about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock.
You know I love you .and just can't take this.. you know I love you and playing for keeps..... This is one of my back in the days macking song,, Had the the females melting, when I came around
Of all the hits in the Genesis arsenal, this CLEARLY, was their best ballad. I must say that Mr. Collins was on to something here. Thing is, if Peter Gabriel was still with the band, would they've written a ballad of this calibre? I strongly doubt it, but, hey, that's me.
@kja427 "this CLEARLY was their best ballad" Well that's a matter of opinion isn't it? I'm not sure if Peter were still in the band that they would've been doing songs like this anyway, since the kind of music Genesis made while he was around was VERY different from what they later became known for.Not that I like 'In Too Deep", (I DON"T) but I think some may argue that Pete's 'In Your Eyes' is on the same level,or superior to this.I think it is.Imo Genesis' best work was from 1971-77.

Wow. I love NIN, Genesis and Phil Collins. There is no reason you can't enjoy all of it you elitist prick. I'm so tired of this high-school level of justification for an age of music YOU didn't grow up in.
@ronaldmonster Such articulation for not comprehending my message. I know more about NIN and Tool than anyone I know-from personal experience. You'd be surprised at who knows who. To enlighten you, I'm merely comparing Genesis to the music I am most familiar with. It was a personal basis you (or any of these scholars) couldn't identify with unless you knew me. Ergo, it was a rhetorical statement I voiced out of disregard for such brilliant feedback.
