Canadian leaders are the dullest ever, this man is meek like a kitten and Stephen Harper has a face like a clown fish and is as dull as a tuna sandwich.
@Counterbrilliance I'll assume you're from the States, then? We don't need our politics to get shot in the face or be of a "different" race to be popular. ;) Besides, I'd rather my politicians be smart than idiotic.
This is one thing I love about Canadian politics, if anything our leaders are fairly approachable people who are willing to do things like this. Jack, especially, was a great man in his ability to convey true and meaningful sincerity and remain connected even after many years in Ottawa. We all miss you, Jack.
Jack, your loving smile and attitude were infectious! Thanks for being one of the only politicians who really cared about Canada. You have given so much to this country and we thank you for it :) Rest in peace
Such an awesome man. I'm glad he got to see his dream of becoming the official opposition come to fruition. He brought the NDP to new heights never even dreamed possible a few years ago. Rest In Peace.
@StandUpForCanada1867 //That comment is just plain GUTLESS.// This coming from the party that refuses to talk to the press, and shuts down Parliament when faced with accusations of torture and fraud.
@b3gregjockca ...... What are you thinking ( Or lack thereof ) Your comment is totally tasteless and rude . I too don't care for the way many politicians go about the business of running this country , however there is no place for a mindset such as yours . Having lost a child of three and a half years to such a disease myself , I would never wish that fate on anyone . Shame on you , and I feel sorry for you ....
If only every politician was as classy and personable as Jack Layton.
All politics aside, he was a true visionary, speaking about things like HIV / AIDS, same-sex marriage, gender equality, and prevention of violence against women, when he was just a Toronto city councillor during the 80's. A time when these topics were taboo.
What a likeable guy. Too bad I never got to meet him. Watching this puts things in perspective about what is important in life: family and shared experiences. It's quite eerie to see the actual bed he passed in. RIP Jack, we won't forget you.
Wish all the heart-felt feelings toward Mr. Layton would have been votes when he were alive. Amazing to see the right-wing press, who tore him up one side and down the other, is now fawning over him. Just saying...
I abhor the NDP's politics but he was a genuinely likable person, something that in my mind is difficult for a politician to be. I dare say he'd have made a good president with a non-NDP controlled Congress. RIP Jack.
@greenlucy1 No, that's one NDP thing I can get behind - electoral reform. In my mind Jack woulda been a great president, as long as the rest of the party wouldn't wreak havoc with the economy. You see, the Americans have the best system on paper. It's just there's too many people and elections (midterms, every 2 years) and too much polarization. We should have a republic and vote for your MP, Senator and President ONCE every 4 years. Jack woulda flourished.
I hate it when people say all politicians are liars and snakes. How can anybody say that about Jack Layton? RIP Jack. I didn't vote for you, and that really doesn't matter
My heart truly breaks for this country. I hope that in my life time, I can vote for a politician with as much integrity, patience, and fortitude as Jack Layton. I hope with all my might that the memory of Jack will inspire more young people in this country to get involved in politics and provide us with the positive and future thinking leadership that this country so sorely needs.
Jack, you will be missed. Thank you for loving your country and working toward your dream of a better Canada.
Jack Layton's untimely death is a terrible loss to our country. He embodied all of the traits that we want in our leaders but so rarely get - integrity, intelligence, commitment, compassion, humour.
I wasn't a huge fan of the NDP but I think they were a great balance against the conservatives. I don't think they'll be the same without Layton. Terribly sad.
Today no one is Liberal-Conservative-Green or even NDP. We are all just Canadians in mourning. Rest in Peace Jack we will miss you. Try to live everyday like it’s your last because one day it will.

I don’t think Canadians will ever get over Jack Layton’s death and that’s the way it should be. When someone this great passes on you never truly get over it. All you can do is manage the grief until the day you die. And if you’re fortunate enough to be as great your death will have the same impact. This will create a cycle of grief and greatness, which inevitably will make our way of life on this planet better.
Living in Buffalo I'm lucky to get to see Rick Mercer on my cable--and of course, Hockey Night in Canada. I really respected Mr. Layton and feel very sad today to read of his passing. Just an Interesting note... at about 1:56 you can see a handmade sign hanging in the kitchen that reads: "Get well soon Jack!" despite being a year and a half old video.
