  • Wait til Extreme Corn Farming and Ethanol Distilling gets popular! Now that's what I call GREEN!

  • tires=fossil fuels, car interior=fossil fuels, lubricants=fossil fuels, ethanol has carbonates and its lighter, fuel to weight ratio does not work as a comparison to octane... carbon is the best bond for holding hydrogen and oxygen, when will we finally move on and understand its collection of carbon on the combustion on elimination of carbon in the fuel... sorry what do i know, you must be a chemist...

  • So you're proposing to make an automobile completely out of lima beans?

  • lol that bat man and robin pic was funny

  • Well, that compressed air does not get into that car all by itself, as there is either a gas or electric comperssor doing that so once again, you have pollution in the chain even if the car itself emits nothing.

  • well, electric cars are not zero emission...

but, never the less, i like the show, tough i dont understand every thing, thanks, good luck & greets

  • DEATH TOTHE GREEN MOVEMENT!

  • Note to self: go to live earth.

  • lol robin and batman kissing

  • Urgh, i don't like the picture with batman kissing robin

  • Get over it, I used to hate gays, but then i decided to support their cause but still hate them. Now i find them better than ok, their allies to my cause.

  • no no, i'm ok with gay people, it's just that i don't feel right about BATMAN and ROBIN kissing - it just feels really icky

  • In that case, we can both agree. Batman is awesome. BnR kissing doesn't seem right, its like Brad Pitt making out with a teen age girl.

  • no "ex post facto" laws....

  • Those cars look like "Johnny Cabs" except no Johnny. =*(

  • I said this the last time, and yes, the guy from the ad at the end STILL looks and sounds retarded.

  • Excellent as usuall Well done Zaproot!

  • Another problem with the CPSIA is the unintended impact it has on cottage industries and crafters. These people make children's products locally and often with recycled materials and are too small to send anything for testing. That leaves us with stuff made in China and shipped halfway around the world.

  • i would like to know the % of cottage industries and crafters that have even looked at any rules set by the CPSIA.

It would be impossible to arrest grandma at the flee market because she didn't send her scarves to the CPSIA for Lead testing...

not related to your post directly, but still interesting: China makes high-quality goods too, but Walmart is too cheap. I hear some people talk about lead in the paint like China is secretly poisoning us before the invasion haha

  • Everyone I've talked to has looked it at the bill quite closely and disagree with your assessment.

  • which "assessment"? that it would be impossible to arrest grandma? it's not impossible, but it would not be a viable action for any sort of authority...

that China makes quality products? I assume you've never been. Walmart doesn't sell the quality products for one reason: You'll pick the one with the shiny lead paint because it's $10 cheaper.

or maybe the assessment about china NOT invading - if you disagree with that... maybe you need a tinfoil hat too so I won't continue this debate.

  • My comment keeps getting lost, but here's the gist. Cottage industries are more than grandma and craft fairs. They are small businesses operating out of homes and selling on sites like Etsy and to small retailers (boutiques, etc.) The CPSIA can very well impact them. They may be violating Etsy terms of agreement and boutiques may stop buying their product.

  • I've looked at the CPSIA - it is not ALL products intended for children under 12. There is a definitive list of product types.

This piqued my interest so I called some small business owners I know about this. They are not worried at all because the manufacturers of the materials they purchase to make their products have to abide by the same rule. In other words - they can ask for this certification in writing from any materials supplier or find new ones and adapt like everyone else.

  • Good of you to do diligence. Small business owners, those who own stores, may not be concerned, but manufacturers of products still have reason to be. Anyone who uses, for example, recycled materials to make their products is still impacted. It doesn't matter if their materials couldn't possible have lead in them. They still need to have their products tested or those business owners you called won't but their products.

  • I'm not saying their concern isn't valid, but can you consider any other option to safe-check products for safe use?

Would it not be better to have that checked? Does anyone really want to find out in 20 years that they were "saving the planet" or using recycled material that was toxic and they didn't even know it?

Also, I haven't heard about any costs yet so there is no need to get to worried. It could turn out to be just another drop in the bucket on the manufacturer's to-do list.

  • Testing is expensive. It's a drop in the bucket for Graco and Carter's, but prohibitive for others. I agree that better regulation is needed, but this bill was a knee-jerk reaction to all these problems with products from China and needs to be thought out better. It's a simple solution to a complex problem, but simple solutions are often wrong.

  • do you have other recommendations that would accomplish the same thing without compromising the quality of the results?

I don't discount that businesses will be affected, how many how far and how bad are points we can argue till we're blue in the face.

The fact remains that lead doesn't JUST come from china and there ARE items found every year in Made in USA products that contain lead too

P.S. not all products have to be tested. the CPSIA isn't a blanket policy & almost anything can contain lead

  • Really, I think there just needs to be some exception language for manufacturers under a certain size, either based on employee or revenue. While some lead may slip through the cracks, very little would and an exception would keep this bill from hurting cottage industries while still cutting out large portions of lead from children's products.

  • Exceptions ? Are you kidding ? Why should I or any other parent put their child's saftey at risk in order to save some small company money ?

You have your priorties screwed on backwards my unknown friend.

  • We're discussing reactionary legislation that will kill cottage industries that make children's products. Someone who buys wood at Home Depot to make toys isn't putting our children at risk, but that individual would be liable for prohibitively expensive testing under the CPSIA. The person who buys fabric at the fabric store to make cute shirts or baby carriers isn't putting your child or mine at risk of lead poisoning, but may be affected by this bill. Does that sound like a good idea?

  • Again you with worry about someone having to spend more money over children's safety, or is it that you are clueless on how big business operates ?

If you create a loophole for safety regulations, the larger companies will regroup in order to use that gap, as it's been done before, and will no doubt be redone over and over again as they deem fit.

So tough rocks if someone has to spend ore money to give me peace of mind that I am not harming my child when I give them something.

  • You're the one who's clueless and you're clearly not reading my comments well or you'd understand that this isn't about saving money, but saving cottage industries.

Large businesses can't restructure so that they'll represent 1-10 employee companies. Even if they could, it would be cheaper to just pay for the testing.

If you want to buy all of your products from big companies, fine, but don't over-regulate and ruin it for consumers who do their own research.

  • If they make a safe quality product, people will buy it regardless what extra money they will pay, as you know as well as I do that whatever cost small inductries incur will be passed onto the consumers in the end.

  • And youy are not reading what I am saying, which is I could care less about saving cottage industries if it means a legal loophole would be created.

For one thing, most buy in bulk, & not at retail so your first example was not very well thought out.

We have enough corporate welfare as it is with large companies without the little ones also starting down that road, as they get enough breaks as it stands.

  • I already explained a way around the loophole. The FDA has similar loopholes for small food packagers and you don't see ConAgra taking advantage of them. It's not going to happen.

You fail to understand the issue here. My examples are of individuals who make children's products out of their homes. Many of them do buy at retail. Even when they do buy in bulk, they're still not making enough money to cover the cost of testing.

  • Tough rocks for them then.

I have no sympathy for people who want to run a business, but want special rules made for just them, as they either have a quality product or they do not, no middle ground npr should there be.

  • Walking > Cars

  • Cycling > Walking > Cars

Actually, on a bike I even beat public transportation to most places, and never have to pay for parking or transportation

  • :) nice, im too use to walking though but your idea sounds cool too, I beat traffic too, but thats only cause I walk mega fast :D:D

  • That's the Batman comic from Iceman_Blue!!

  • Thrift Stores are going to make loses with that law. Not good in this economy when more will be going to thrift stores and pawn shops.

  • ok first of all i just got done watching chris crocker talk about politics and i was about to blow my head off. im so glad you are around zap root. secondly i think jess makeup looks great so...yea.... and thiiirrddllyyyy batman and robin kissing made me feel funny in my pants. love you zap root-

  • Why shouldn't the new law be retroactive. Why should buyers be buying lead-filled products without their knowing? Just so the seller can make a buck?

  • Great comment kockgunner! About the retroactive aspect of the law. I bet environmentalists would've been complaining if this law wasn't retroactive. We can't keep complaining! Short term losses, long term gains.

  • Jess, you used too much lipstick on this one!

And that Hawk is HAWT! Would you like to get cozy if I make it 0 emissions? :D

  • Electricity is not zero emissions. Where do you think we get all our electricity from? Non coal plants?

  • but it'll be easier to make electricity zero emissions; If you go with hydrogen fuel cells or something of the like you have to deal with converting all the gas stations for the cars, and then replacing all the coal power plants with solar for everything else. If everything just plugs in to the grid, once the coal plants are gone you've got nothing else to worry about.

  • Tesla > Any other electric car

  • Awesome, I would like to make an electric car

  • lol

    Batman and Robin

    lol

  • Its pretty bad how alot of younger people are smarter than people who create laws

  • Always excellent. First prize for Jess and Zaproot.

  • That cozy thing was... not cool. lol

  • batman and robin. =O

  • I saw the Tango electric car at an auto show about 6 years ago. That thing is bad ass. Apparently its safer than most cars because its built around a formula 1 roll cage.
