sorry to say but this isnt even taps nor is it echo taps this is hymn to the fallen and trust me i would know ive played this song atleast 100 times due to the fact that we played alot of military songs last year for the band festival
echo taps is not meant to be played. echo taps is an insult to taps. my belief and my lesson teachers belief. he played taps, was in the service in vietnam, and was in the service band. respected trumpet player. got pissed and angry talking about echo taps...
As it turns out, according to Army Regulation 220-90, Army Bands dated December 2007, Paragraph 2-5h(1) states the following: “Echo Taps” or “Silver Taps,” the practice of performing “Taps” with multiple buglers, is not authorized. “Echo Taps” is not a part of Army tradition and improperly uses bugler assets.
yesterday, we had a Veterans Day Memorial at our school, and they did a skit(that was made up) about two 18 year olds that joined the Military and 1 of them died in combat. so when the soldier's family was informed, they all started crying and the soldier's friend was really depressed about his death, so at the end the two soldiers Saluted while TAPS was playing. at that moment i almost cried
When I was a marine, I played TAPS in over 100 funeral ceramonies and honestly never really grasped the reverence of the moment. It was just another duty. Many years later, I am moved nearly to tears by just hearing it. Lest we forget --- Lest we forget!
Words to Taps : Day is done. Gone the sun. From the lakes From the hills. From the sky. All is well. Safely rest. God is nigh. Fading light. Dims the sight. And a star. Gems the sky. Gleaming bright. From afar. Drawing nigh. Falls the night. Thanks and praise. For our days. Neath the sun Neath the stars. Neath the sky As we go. This we know. God is nigh
As a Bugler, playing taps is one of the most important duties we perform; it is even more majestic and powerful when played live; ESSE QUAM VIDERI! God Bless all our of service people - past, present & future. Thank you for your service! And thank-you 'tapsbugler' for sharing/posting this!
if you search up honor guard nov (whatday) 1998 then that might tell you but otherwise i dont think there will be another way..and im sorry for your loss
As regards this theme song: The song is taken (as best I can tell anyway) from the ending credits of "Saving Private Ryan." A worthwhile film, even if you don't agree with the political positions of all the actors...
I will agree that this is not exactly a rendtion of "echo taps," as performed by the US Marine Band, no.
But it's still offered, I think, with true respect for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for the United States of America and what they perceived it stood/stands for.
In defence of codeman1221: I think his heart was in the right place, even if his sentiment seemed disrespectful to some on this board.
For my part, don't think it was intended to be (either of those).
The thread title is a bit misleading: The song is not "echo taps" but is, rather, the end theme song from "Saving Private Ryan." A fine theme, and one very much "on point.
Remember: Honoring American veterans is what matters most here.
Taps is one of the most beautiful songs ever played. It's the only song I know that will make a marine cry. After all these soldiers have done for us, I feel as trumpet players we should be more than willing to put in the time and effort to perform taps for them. Taps should be played by a live person, not a machine. Thank you for this video and the message it sends. God bless America, her soldiers, and those who know that freedom isn't free.
I choke up when I hear "Taps" being sounded at a funeral for the fallen...The last place I heard it live was at the National Cemetery in Gettysburg at dusk. Apparently, one local woman plays it every evening at sunset to close the cemetery.

This song does not "rock", it does not "trash"; it is the most revernt 24 notes that can ever be sounded.
It is only the sound of Saint Peter opening the gates to a fallen comrade who served faithfully and honestly the cause of mankind.
We are all honored to have him upon our rolls.

Hello everyone and happy Memorial Day!! I'm playing taps this morning at my cemetary in front of thousands of people!! This song rocks!!
codeman1221 3 years ago
I believe "this song rocks" is somewhat of a disrespectful approach to what it is played for. If you think it rocks...you need to grow up.
DRG1939 3 years ago
Agreed. And how can you wish a "happy" Memorial Day??
