the sound of the 2010 full album remaster is superb btw ! Can really hear a lot of previously kinda blurry sound details..also on that track; packed with little subtle sounds, just honey with good headphones &/or good sound systems -! :)
@Fladardian: yes, the bass and corous voice is a Sting cameo, also the guitar was by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. Arcadia was one of the most interesting progect of 80'.
Without getting into details, Arcadia was ONLY a byproduct of what was worth saving from DD before the break-up. Unfortunately they failed to live more than a year or two after that even though they provided us with great music :(
@laurachanwo+roney76 talking countries^: i always prefered subtle China Crisis sound to Japan one, here ^ ps; rip Karn (fretless bass), the only one i respected in it anyway..btw, if you ever see a similarity between le bon typical lyrics, rhodes typical 2nd roxy period sound (especially here^), &general pink floyed-esque & relaxed atmosphere..with the late lunar (and gloomy more than once) sound of Japan, you really must be on another existence plan lol (Sylvian fans, isn't it?..typical *) ).

@swelstead pardon? as for the superficial looks, i don't see any blond hairs there, nor many Rhodes - mainly Le Bon. As for the real content, I don't remember either any Japan lyrics talking about the subject of that song ; you should really concentrate harder on the real content of musics instead of old gossips and just looks maybe.. just my 2 € cents. btw, why to everytime try to put back Durans to Japan passed days, apart to show a failing musical real similitude and bias anyway, hm?
@sunset002007 I have almost no idea what you're saying here. But various members of Duran Duran have expressed admiration for Japan/David Sylvian over the years.
@swelstead obviously. but then you mean mainly NR and JT, 2 of the 5 members. Everyone knows indeed NR liked Sylvian looks and JT Karn's fretless bass tries (he only tried it on 5 DD songs btw..credit to Karn he always said: true. but he had others references too). But for your understanding; i see no special NR Japan references there..even hairs.i guess you heard (and wanted to mean) they "imitated" Japan (that is false -more than Japan & different themas, especially here), was just my point *)
ps; poor NR..he can't even look in the distance and 'straight the enigmatical pose' with a self-absorbed shadowy gaze (his natural personality too after all btw..that he always had it seems), without beeing accused to imitate Sylvian too now..damn... :)
Incredible artistry, sheer genius- I'm constantly amazed at how relevant Simon, Nick, John (though he's not in this project) continue to be. Thanks for posting this, Newyork1969!

arcadia was much better than the duran duran sound, the songs have more depth to them, don't get me wrong i love duran duran, but this one was the one... I look at the so called music of today and wonder how long it will be before this type of sound comes back.. this is real music and not some rehashed junk... this music is one that everybody can listen to...
@markryan1963 ALOT of people including me feel that way, who are looking for that type of sound to come back! So let's usher this in then, let's do this! lol But seriously...
you're absolutely right !! arcadia is kind of experimental synth -pop with new romantic dropped . I don't know how DD up to their work lately ? Mark ronson bring back their route ( blessed for him)
@clubklass45 Duran is touring right now...Seeing them April 14th in Pomona...They have never lost it...I loved Arcadia and don't forget the Power Station with John Taylor and the Late Robert Palmer (RIP) :( Really loved that group as well...They are all good. Duran was great before Mark Ronson...They never lost it inmy book, nor did they loose their looks:) :)
@markryan1963 'So Red The Rose' is certainly a great Duran Duran album (I refuse to credit the album to 'Arcadia', it just seems silly now the guys are back together) but there are many other Duran Duran albums which stand up to this. Certainly the new album is just as good, plus 'Duran Duran', 'Rio' and 'Notorious'.
@brbgal That's because Power Station promoted itself more and went on tour. Arcadia played it cool and rather than using much promotion, simply allowed fans to find them.
@markryan1963 I agree 100%. I own every Duran Duran cassette/CD, but "So Red The Rose" gets played more than all the Duran stuff put together. It has less of a pop sound and an edgier feel to it. The way Simon probably wante Duran to sound from the beginning.

i agree lol. but this lp came out when i was 15, and nobody liked it but me and my sister n shit. and i definately got my share of chicks with the duran/depeche/whamUK hairdoodoo i had lol.
Simon once described the "So Red The Rose" album as "an exercise in self-indulgence". While they think there is some very good material on it, they don't consider it a particularly strong release. He said it felt "overdone and unfinished at the same time".
*shrug* I think quite a lot of it was excellent, particularly "Missing".
On the subject of classic albums rom this era you just have to get 'The Hurting ' by Tears for fears, its dark ,moody and timeless, not the evrybody wants to rule the world side of them, you wont regret it.
This is a superb album. The best in my whole collection and I never tire or listening to it. Do yourself a favour and get a copy, you won't regret it.
Thank you so much for posting this amazing song. I loved the album Arcadia released and had no idea how many others loved it. The lyrics are incredible, as is the music. Duran Duran and the 80s forever.
listening to these, with all the big stars on it like mr sting, guilmour and that great musician from roxy music(remember that Brian Ferry made some stuff with Guilmor in that time) that we always can feel and see the unique sound, music and vocals of duran duran
arcadia and duran duran are the same thing...any arcadia track could be an album track off any duran albums. personally, i think so red the rose is/was a superb album. 10/10.
No arcadia and duran are the same. that is because of the singer and the keyboard player. my point was, for example, secret oktober, was le bon and rhodes as was the chauffeur, and a few other tracks. the rockier duran stuff includes the rest. in my opinion, from a fan of the last 26 years.
Just because they had the same members it does not mean the music is the same. So Red the Rose is extremely overmixed. Even Nick admitted to that. Duran songs are not. This is why Arcadia never toured. They could not make the songs sound like what they do on the album and if you went to the 87 Strange Behaviour tour and heard Election Day live then, you might have been able to tell the difference.
thanks for the comparison you offered to me. I would say that Duran Duran and Arcadia are very similiar. That would be because NR and Le Bon are in the band. Rhodes and Le bon gave Duran a few classics from their own input. TO me duran duran and arcadia are very similar and obviously very similar to each other but power station obviosly are not - probably why i never bought into their material. anyway, the ambience, atmosphere, melody, mystic lyrics, catchy verses and choruses are all ...
why I think duran and arcadia are very similar. you could liken them to twins in musical identy. he he. seriously brother, le bon makes duran duran what it is and hes on arcadia along with mr rhodes...im a duran duran fan and arcadia are the same bloomin thing...regardless of the nuances and the differnet guitar styles...its all bloody marvellous.
I hear what you're saying, and I love 'em both too.
However, to say that Arcadia and Duran Druan are the same is to say that John and Andy Taylor's contributions are irrelevant. There is unquestioningly a "rockish edge" that they bring to Duran Duran that was absent in Arcadia. Arcadia is very much more subtile, artistic... very "un-Andy and John", what you hear clearly in Power Station.
Obviously, PS is a larger departure from D2 than Arcadia, but I disagree that a band IS the lead singer.
I do sort of wish they would revisit their separate projects again one more time and have a new Arcadia and Power Station CDs. However, the obvious big snag is the absence of Robert Palmer. Dang, can NOT believe he's gone.
duran duran are an incredible band - secret october/chauffer are rhodes and le bon...finest hour/planet earth/new religoin etc are all 5. duran duran can be just as creative as a duo as mentioned or with the 5...but duran would never have been what they are without andy taylor or john taylor either. just the power station wasnt my thing...
just re-reading your words about aradia and power station - I dont think you can measure accuratley 'distance between these two', I get what you mean but the difference is in creative direciton: arcadia is melod/words/imagery/emotion/sunthetic and power station is what is says on the can - heavy drums/guitar - putting the two gives you duran duran but the difference between duran duran and arcadia is not huge - as duran duran were never ultra heavy like power station was.
Yes its such a great album, but didnt get the credit it deserves. I just love it. I wish there was a longer version of the video to match the song on the album.
Such a fantastic album. I received this from a friend when it first came out and I still have the tape. Every song on this album is brilliant. Oh the memories it brings...
i must tend to agree, this is a one of akind piece of work, the record has a feel to it, i cant quite put my finger on it but i like it, websters define such sounds as cold, some what haunting yet up lifting. still to this day i find my self playing this record alot in the winter months.
Good vid this, particulalry like the intriguing staircase which becomes Nick Rhodes residence for this entire video. I say an Arcadia revival is well over due. I'll buy/steal a red London bus, paint the "So Red The Rose" album cover on both sides of it and then drive around the world picking up those who appreciated the Arcadia experience. Who's with me?
The vocal is a bit weak in this one but hell it´s so awesome work of art! All these icons together.. Check also Novembre cover I think they´ve made it very well..
Every single track on this album is timeless. I think it is definitly one of the most underated albums of all time. Along with Duran Duran's Liberty.
seriously. as a modern pop vocalist, nobody... i mean nobody sounds like simon le bon. nick is just a wild talented genius... and i think the 'so red the rose' album sounds better and more relavent today than it did when it was released. even the single 'election day' sounds better now. didn't love it then, i like it more now. good stuff.
One of the best forgotten songs of that time. Love the Stings voice in the background and David GIlmores touch. Maybe one of more serious songs from Simon.

Arcadia was obviously very similar, but they are considerably different. There's a simple unit of measure to describe the difference.
Arcadia + Power Station = Duran Duran.
The distance between Arcadia to D2 is about as different from D2 to Power Station, but the difference in Arcadia and Power Station was HUGE.
They were not the same.

hi
thanks for the comparison you offered to me. I would say that Duran Duran and Arcadia are very similiar. That would be because NR and Le Bon are in the band. Rhodes and Le bon gave Duran a few classics from their own input. TO me duran duran and arcadia are very similar and obviously very similar to each other but power station obviosly are not - probably why i never bought into their material. anyway, the ambience, atmosphere, melody, mystic lyrics, catchy verses and choruses are all ...
gregingram1970 2 years ago
why I think duran and arcadia are very similar. you could liken them to twins in musical identy. he he. seriously brother, le bon makes duran duran what it is and hes on arcadia along with mr rhodes...im a duran duran fan and arcadia are the same bloomin thing...regardless of the nuances and the differnet guitar styles...its all bloody marvellous.

Anyway, take care fellow fan. ;)

duran duran are an incredible band - secret october/chauffer are rhodes and le bon...finest hour/planet earth/new religoin etc are all 5. duran duran can be just as creative as a duo as mentioned or with the 5...but duran would never have been what they are without andy taylor or john taylor either. just the power station wasnt my thing...
gregingram1970 2 years ago 2
hi again...
just re-reading your words about aradia and power station - I dont think you can measure accuratley 'distance between these two', I get what you mean but the difference is in creative direciton: arcadia is melod/words/imagery/emotion/sunthetic and power station is what is says on the can - heavy drums/guitar - putting the two gives you duran duran but the difference between duran duran and arcadia is not huge - as duran duran were never ultra heavy like power station was.

Yes its such a great album, but didnt get the credit it deserves. I just love it. I wish there was a longer version of the video to match the song on the album.

i must tend to agree, this is a one of akind piece of work, the record has a feel to it, i cant quite put my finger on it but i like it, websters define such sounds as cold, some what haunting yet up lifting. still to this day i find my self playing this record alot in the winter months.

Every single track on this album is timeless. I think it is definitly one of the most underated albums of all time. Along with Duran Duran's Liberty.

seriously. as a modern pop vocalist, nobody... i mean nobody sounds like simon le bon. nick is just a wild talented genius... and i think the 'so red the rose' album sounds better and more relavent today than it did when it was released. even the single 'election day' sounds better now. didn't love it then, i like it more now. good stuff.

Wow, I remember the video for Election Day, but this video never got played in the U.S., or at least I never saw it till now.
And yes, I agree, very underrated record, and song.

One of the best forgotten songs of that time. Love the Stings voice in the background and David GIlmores touch. Maybe one of more serious songs from Simon.
