Using the foot brake could have been used to make the front diff think that both tires were touching the ground. I do it all the time. Now, I am getting a Spartan for the front.

an open diff is when like on the front axle of this xj only one of the front tires was spining what a locker does is it locks the passenger side and driver side axle together and it sends equal power to both wheels you can have a locker in the front and/or the back axle. does this answer your question?

Yeah, lockers would have put equal torque to all 4 wheels and he would have crawled out much faster - He's a good driver, though - and I like the XJ's front bumper

Wisely driven - in the sense of not just gassing it when it felt bad. Kinda makes me want to take my XJ through there :-)
