This is a gorgeous version of Shadows and Light. I think Joni and Jaco are so good together because their sound is two sympathetic voices in counterpoint: Joni's mid-high female and Jaco's mid-low male.
I first heard Joni Mitchell a few years ago while watching The Last Waltz..her voice is beautiful, poetry, and just awesome. I love Jaco's playing so much, I can't believe these two great musicians jammed together. I'm 24, but my soul belongs in this era, no doubt. Thanks for posting this, its great.
This is why jaco was such a force in his day: VERSATILITY!
He was not just a one trick pony, he could handle the background of a song, with a fludity that most do not possess even today. He was "chops-heavy", but he could make you stop and listen, and that makes him one of the greats.
WHo is the best ever? Anyone who ever made me want to listen to their playing!
I agree wholeheartedly with your comment. Few other bassists have been as well rounded in their musical abilities as Jaco. He always gave you the impression that every note he played MATTERRED. It was almost like every single nuance of sound was a carefully placed brush stroke on a canvas.
@free2bpoppie Bravo! Well pointed. And true to the heart of the matter: Jaco's musicianship!!! I even tried out Jacos bass with Joni to a friend, who was playing bass in a punk band at that time. He cried...
@free2bpoppie Yes the list is long but when it comes to the part of the it that shows electric bassists, I couldn't for the life of me, think of anyone else for the first name other than Jaco's. .
Joni, if you ever read this... Thank you! You rockin' hottie. Thank you for the unLIMITED freedom you granted Jaco to convey everything he wanted to in that Shadows and Light, indeed ALL the albums you invited him to play. (e.g. Hegira 0*-*0) Herein, your artistic largess has benefitted us all -- in perpetuity! You're a wonderful girl. I'd love to Talk to You *squawk!* :D and hear every story of those projects with Jaco. Thanks again, girl -- you've done us all an immeasurable service.
Blindness and sight... shadows and light... Sublime! As amazing as this chick is musically, she's equally amazing as a poet and graphic artist. Her prose continually amazes me. I mean "paprica plains"... how cool is that? I'm so glad she hooked up with Jaco.
WOW! These concerts from '76 are SO good. I have a recording of the date she did in Philadelphia that year at the Spectrum : it's amazing. I've never liked S+L much as a song; I actually dislike the album cut. But these reworkings (lyrics and music) turn the song into something new and much improved. Try to get your hands ont the Spectrum recording - the band is amazing and Joni's vocals are stronger.
Hi. Thanks for taking the time to comment and giving the heads up on the Philadelphia recording! I shall try and seek it out. I also agree completely regarding the improved quality of this reworked version.
I have no words for how meaningful this is to me. Thank you for posting. Ever need a definition of completely cool, beautiful and brilliant? This is it.
You're most welcome. And thank you very much for taking the time to write such a wonderful comment. I'm glad to hear that this piece of music resonates so deeply with you.

@ bilko - Jaco and Joni were romantically involved? I did not know that. His life at the end of it and manner of death are so sad.
